Which midfielder will we sign this summer?

Have to laugh at people who say "Nothing will happen during the World Cup". Fabregas has basically disproved that.

Fabregas happened before the World Cup.

What about Axel Witsel? heard rumors his not happy in Zenit and would love a move to the premier league, surely he'd be better than Clasie or Blind.

By about two hours. Be was still in Brazil at the time.

Yet he'd already been to London and presumably had discussions with various club representatives and by his own admission wanted to get the transfer done before the World Cup started so he could focus on playing for his country.

I'll be very surprised if another player playing at the World Cup changes club before their country is out.

Not worried in the slightest about the likes of Fabregas turning us down, because I'm still firmly of the belief that we don't need an attacking midfielder. We need box-to-box or defensively minded midfielders, perhaps a winger or two and some bolstering in defence. We have Mata, Kagawa, Rooney and Januzaj. While Fabregas is slightly different to them, he's not different enough for me to have wanted him in. I want us to sign a Vidal, a Carvalho, a Shaw... players like these will remove some of our weaknesses far more than Fabregas would have.

I think we need to realise sooner rather than later that Vidal is no more signing for Manchester United this summer than the Pope is. Save yourself any headaches, it's just not going to happen.

You have to wonder in Gods name why Liverpool and not us are about to sign this young central midfielder who is beign tipped for great things...what happened to the days when we used to sign the best up and coming English talents that no one had heard of like Lee Sharpe etc

To be far we sign our far share of young English talent, we do have plenty of young English players on the books, and right now our need for first teamers is much greater, so I guess/hope our attention is there.

This place would melt down with "FFS, another cheap Glazer punt", "we have no money", "buying to sell again" etc etc if we signed him

The nice thing about doing a bit of World Cup scouting is that it reminds you that simple opportunity is often the difference between a decent mid-table-looking player and a very respectable cog in a top team.

Forget all these unachievable world-class midfielders who we're reported to be pursuing/missing out on... nab Aranguiz and Song* this summer and then Strootman in January when he's definitely over his injury. Bish bash bosh, perfectly respectable, defensively solid, hard-working midfield acquired without any massive outlay (or the risk of missing out on all out targets and getting nothing.) Sit back and let Van Gaal work his magic with them.

*Bad timing what with his moronic red card against Croatia, but it's hardly typical so does't really affect my estimation of him.

Those names are just an example - there are others that you could substitute them for. Although having (I'll admit) known nothing at all about Aranguiz before this tournament, I've been massively impressed by him. Obviously in some magic dream world we'd sign Vidal and be in wonderland. But realistically his CM partner wouldn't be a bad target at all, and you'd have to think Internacional could be persuaded to part with him by a modest figure compared to the numbers being thrown around for the top midfield targets in Europe.

These are the typical kind of players that only ever show up for their national team, espeically when playing in a world cup and never show a goddamn thing at club level.

As much as the worldcup can make worldbeaters look like absolute shit, can it make absolute shit look like worldbeaters. I can't put my finger on it why that is, but it is a fact, every worldcup you see alot of these players most never heard of make an impression and get a move to a european club (often a level or 2 or 3 below were we are) and than they fail and you never hear from them again until you see them back with their team in 4 years time at the next worldcup. Worldcup games are very special and never make a good case for deciding transfers on, there has to be something more than simply a good display of a unknown player to justify a move.

Song I wouldn't mind, neither Khedira, those two look like the most likley signings we could make for our midfield and possibly Strootman in January.
I was also playing today with the idea of signing De Jong, if we could get him for a low fee. He has got that fight and steel in him that we lack on the midfield and we could definitley use in certain games, he is also somebody who preforms on a very consistent level, not somebody you would sign for his brilliant football talent, but I can't really think of a player atm that more embodys this fighter spirit that many people always say we are missing. We used to have it with Fletcher, but that is gone, Fellaini has a bit of it, but he is not as good in the CM as De Jong imo.

Wouldn't mind De Jong and one of Song or Khedira, With Strootman completing that midfield in January. Fellaini can then be sold and the rest can be squad players (Clev could also be sold, Fletcher is clearly past it, Carrick max 1 or 2 more seasons than he is also past it) and ofc Anderson also has to be sold.

would be so nice if every time some one named Vidal as a realistic target a big hand reached out of thier computer and slapped them with a big fish!

I vote in favor of this magnificent idea, we'll track the IP of every poster posting the words Vidal and target without a negation, we'll track them down and slap some sense into them with a big raw stinky fish !

Not kidding here, serious about this, can we somehow make this happen and include it to the Schweinsteiger and Pogba muppets aswell ?

This is true, but I can't help but think why England's shit players nearly never look like world beaters when their world beaters play shite. It's a bizarre exception to the rule.

is it also possible to invent a time machine and go back and slap every fan last summer who claimed "CR7 was coming home"....... in fact id probably like to slap and lacerate(just a little) anyone who calls ronaldo "CR7"....... but that maybe taking things a bit far......

Nah !

and the time machine thingy, their posts are still here in the vast archives of the caf (you can even find posts of 10 years ago), no doubt we can find some neat search algorithm to track those bastards down and teach them a lesson or two with Slappy (I'am calling the fish Slappy).

i think we will need more then one fish! probably different sizes/densities/smell depending on the severity of the crime.

it could be like Golf, you know for some one claiming were gonna sign just vidal, you'd have ask your caddy for a trout(called Kennith for arguments sake)
and then as the stupidity rises so does the size of the fish, for example posting a team with kroos and reus you get a slap with a Haddock( Named Audry)
.... Schweinsteiger and Vidal togther a Tuna(Mary)...... Pogba, Kroos Robben a Sturgeon(Frank) .........

Untill you get to those idiots who suggest signing Hummels, Pogba, Vidal Kroos and CRf**king7 you get your caddy to wheel a wrecking ball with a blue whale attached.(named Bryan)

Well incase nobody posted it yet; Sneijder pretty much gave himself an invite to united in last press conference for holland.

Saying something like this translated:

"If van Gaal asks me to come to United i'd of course consider the opportunity. Nobody in the dutch squad can just say no to LVG asking them".

The negativity is overwhelming, you'd think we were fecking Stoke or Hull the way some of you think, we dropped £37M on Mata in January, the idea that we can't push the boat out to get LvG a couple of top class talents to boost a regressing side is crazy, as is the idea that Manchester United and LvG would not be an enticing proposition for many top players, not everyone can go to Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Not a very good example as Fabregas went to a club whose manager wasn't involved in the world cup.

I wouldn't expect any prominent signings as long as LvG is immersed in all things Holland.

Agreed. The posters who whinge as if they didn't get a shiny new toy for Christmas are the worst. I'm not expecting any significant transfers until Van Gaal is done with the world cup.

You may be right Raoul.

There again, don't you think that VG hasn't communicated the players he wanted to Woodward? That's a theory even the likes of Lou tend to accept.

Highly doubtful there has been much communication, as his focus seems solidly fixated on Holland, and a good number of top players are also tied up in the WC. I'm sure we will see some movement on transfers after Holland finish up.

As I said you're probably right about it. He may have given the go ahead (or disapproval) to deals which were we had done alot of ground work in (ex Shaw). Apart from that I'd see us wait for him until we sign someone.

A player I feel we should consider is Axel Witsel. I have been very impressed seeing him play for the Belgian national team, in my opnion he is by far our best and most important midfielder in fact he might be one of the most important players in the team allround together with Courtois and Kompany.

He is a very good defensive midfielder, his positioning is topnotch, he has amazed me at times how well he can handle being pressured when he has the ball, he never seems to lose it and always seems to find a good footballing solution. He is also a hard player, not losing many physical duels and a good tackler. He also seems to get his fair share of goals and assists and offensive involvement despite playing from such a deep position.

He used to be a bit uncontrolable and oftimes did stupid things on the pitch, but he seems to have matured out of that phase, I have not seen any stupid things for a very long time. I must admit I have hardly seem him play for Zenit and all this is based from his performances for the Belgian national team and the evolution I have seen in his game there but during all those games he has struck me as highly consistent. Alot of other players in the team have been guilty of not showing up or playing a bad game, but not Witsel, he is probably or most steady performer and in my opinion he is the silent force of this Belgian team. He is one of those few names that is truely uncontested in the Belgian team and rightly so because he is simply one of those players who carries the team every single game.

I think he could be a brilliant player for us and he is also a realistic signing for us to make compared to names like Vidal or Schweinsteiger that simply won't happen. He won't come cheap I think, because he is very important for Zenit and they did pay like €40m or so for him whilst he was at Benfica, yet I think he'd be worth it for us.

He would be awesome indeed. He's another one of those players like Ramsey and Strootman that really should have ended up here but didn't due to complacency. Maybe we could give Zenit Fellaini in return :wenger:

We should buy the Chilean midfield. We wont get Vidal but Diaz and especially Aranguiz have impressed so far and im sure we could afford them. Hopefully they'll do well against Holland and maybe impress LvG.

Would Mata have come if he had been playing consistently for Chelsea - given that he needed a longer run of games to ensure his ticket for the World Cup?
