Which midfielder will we sign this summer?

Why won't they come?
Are you for real?..It's unlikely that any of the elite central midfielders in Europe will come here over the summer for the same reasons they didn't come last summer or the summer before either.....Pogba won't come as half of Europe are after him and Juve don't want to sell him this year and when they do he will end up at either PSG or Real Madrid...Vidal will go to Real Madrid or Bayern if he leaves Juve.....Fabregas will probably go back to Arsenal.....Kroos is using us to get a better deal at Bayern.......Koke will probably end up at Barcelona if Atletico decide to cash in on him....Strootman is injured till October but we may get him in january...did i leave anyone out?
For sure we have a chance to get midfielders that would be a slight step down from the elite such as Lars Bender or Khedira etc but even then without champions league football we may struggle to get that level of central midfielders too

We should go for Barkley. We cant seem to get the likes of Kroos,Fabregas etc. Lets go back to the old policy of buying players and making them into stars.
What part of Martines stating that they won't sell Barkley even for Bale money this summer did you not understand? If they were able to hold onto Baines last summer despite Moyes killing himself to try and get him then what makes you think we can just easily prize barkley away from them? Their biggest ever talent along with rooney and a local kid and a player they will not sell this summer even for 200 million I would say

Every club says that.

Plus Barkey is down to two years on his deal. If he doesn't sign a new deal they have no real choice but to sell. We need to test their resolve.

Van Gaal will convert Valencia into a box to box midfielder. :p
He's played there for his national team a fair amount. If he could work on his passing he may make a plausible squad option there.

I get bored reading this every day.
So we overpaid for Fellaini...Get over it. No offence, and I know you are joking, but Moyes always had Fellaini in mind, it wasn't a snap buy just to get a player in, he was always a possibility.

I think United are more than capable of attracting top players if we want.
Who are to say these players have rejected us, just because some newspaper said it. The same newspapers a few days ago also said we was going to get Kroos for 20m.
Not every target is attainable, but we are still a big club and can still attract very good players.

I think the newspapers are really just throwing in anything they can right now.
Robben, Schweinsteiger, Mata the lot.
McCarthy got mentioned, no idea how, but even sky quickly took it down.

I just really think right now its pointless reading what the papers say, because they are trying to make something out of nothing right now

I wasn't against the Fellaini signing and I still think he will prove to be a useful player. Yes we overpaid, but at the time he was a good midfielder who could guarantee goals and a presence. The question was always how he would adapt as a true CM and whether he could transfer his form when playing for a big team. His performances for Belgium suggest he could but it hasn't happened at United yet.

And it's not a case of attracting the top players, the papers are linking us to players who are already at big big clubs, and who are in the CL. Not many players transfer from one big team to another. Mata was obviously out of favour and with RvP, his contract was running out and Arsenal are a selling club. Only reason we got Kagawa was because his contract was running out otherwise we would of had to shell out alot more and Dortmund weren't one of the top teams in world football back then.

Apart from Ronaldo, even Madrid don't sign players from the top 5 clubs, Bale was no different and AC Milan were on the decline when they sold Kaka, so it would be no surprise if we don't get the likes of Vidal, Kroos & Schweinsteiger because it wouldn't be in the players' best interests and neither there respective clubs.

We need to target the average-good Champs League teams, and ones who shine in the Europe League. Likes of Benfica, Seville, Porto, Shakhtar, Schalke & Leverkusen or alternatively bring in the best English talent if it's available for the right price. Players from these clubs have showed they can compete at a very high level and are hungry to prove themselves with a bigger club and to win trophies.

I wouldn't mind us taking a small punt on Yann M'Vila. If we sign 2 midfielders, hed have to be the second one.

Maybe his attitude under LvG is a recipe for disaster, maybe he finally matures and responds to LvG and fulfills the massive potential he once showed.

Assuming Cesc/Kroos are uninterested, the obvious creative midfield targets would probably be Herrera, Strootman, and Rakitic. I suppose we might check the availability of Verratti and Kovacic. Failing that, we'd probably have to think outside the box a little more; Parejo or Cigarini perhaps.

I agree, getting the very top end midfielders will be a struggle, but some are still attainable.
Kroos may not get that deal he wants at Bayern.
There is a good argument for Fabregas coming here over Arsenal
If Real buy Pogba and/or Vidal, they need to get rid of some.

I don't for one minute think it would be a walk in the park, but we still have good pull in the world of football.
With so many players potentially available, it will act as a merry go round

EDIT:
When I responded to what you said earlier, I had a lot of targets in mind.
I agree, chasing from the big clubs is always hard, but thats the same for any club. Once they are there, they only move if they are not wanted anymore, but its about buying the right players from the tier below.

Carvalho, Rakitic, Barkley etc.

Young players who have show potential. I would be more than happy with them type of signings.

since when did the manager make decisions about selling players at everton is the real question. he's going to leave everton sooner or later, i'd be raging if i was an everton fan but it's the way of the game. small chance if they can hit CL for a few seasons running he would stay... how likely is that though

We need two really. A defensively sound player who is technically competent and good under pressure (Martinez, Bender, Strootman, McCarthy) and a more creative midfield player (Herrera) as well as a winger (hopefully Sanchez).

We're not going to get a top bracket creative player so we should just bite the bullet and pay Herreras clause and be done with it.

I really don't care if we overspend at this point, we just really need to get it sorted.

An experienced center back as well and I think that would be a very successful summer

I'll defer to you on that. I thought I saw a photo of him, Van Gaal, and Van Persie at a recent game and just assumed he was now fit.

Strootman did his ACL in March and is unlikely to play football again before October. He is not taking any part in the World Cup.

Looks extremely unlikely we will get top tier talent as seems to be the consistent reality for us. We can only look to young prospects if this remains the case...

Why do so many of our fans think so poorly of Manchester United? It baffles me. at any rate of the second string options being touted Clasie at least looks mobile and technically solid, might be a decent back up for the second CM.

Its sad that Manchester united cant attract a midfielder into their team. Its a shame actually. A big reason in this might be, united are not in the champions league. I actually wont be surprised if we sign kroos next year if we make the champions league. Bayern will keep him this season and wont offer him a new contract, if we get to champions league, we will have a strong chance. Right now, no champions league is the biggest problem for us,that is why some/most players wont wanna sign for us.
Players want to play in the best competitions no matter the club, We have to break the top 4, i think this summer will be a huge let down. We still might get shaw or some decent dutch players, but we wont attract kroos/fabregas ie the players in their pomp or close to reaching it, due to the uncertainity of champions league.I am very sure rooney will be turned into a central mid andwe might sign a good but not top class player.

We clearly need more than one central midfielder. Anything less would be a mistake IMO.

It's really hard, though, to get two central midfielders of world class quality in one summer. I'd love for it to happen too, but given we need some strength in other areas too, we may not get two. Fellaini, Carrick, Cleverley, Fletcher and a new world class signing isn't the best outcome but certainly manageable until next summer where we invest again.

It depends what you consider world class quality.
It's hard to name world class players who are at a lower tier of club right now.

Fabregas would be an option if Barca really want to get rid, but I'd be happy with Rakitic and Carvalho. Two good youngish midfielders who are playing well and improving.

I think its pretty much set we will sign Blind or Clasie after World Cup. Wouldn't rule out Bruno Martins Indi coming as well.

Because despite our world standing in football, we always seem to struggle to attract top notch foreign talent.

Our strength seems to be signing big from England.

Well, if anything, we could take a punt on Jack Rodwell.

Signing the likes of Clasie is exactly what has got us into this position. We've had the numbers, it's the quality that's missing. Van Gaal has his head up his arse if he thinks players like that will take us to where we want to be.
That's a big if.

Nobody has a clue who is on the list... even with Shaw there's no clarity at all and media doesn't help with their guessing games.

Yep, we need at least two CMs as none of our current crop are really fit to be first teamers any more. Hell, even as squad players they don't particularly stand out.

Truth is, even if we sign two first team cms now we'll still have to look at strengthening midfield further in the next few windows as Carrick and Fletcher continue to age. It really is remarkable how weak we've allowed ourselves to become there.

agree. think it may be Clasie and (I hope) Carvalho.

or if we do the unthinkable and actually buy Fabregas....

not holding my breath though.

MEN is saying that we've plonked a £45million bid on the table for Fabregas. I'm not convinced either that we'll get him but he would certainly be a great acquisition. I'm still waiting to see who's leaving. Might be a few surprises there.
