Which midfielder will we sign this summer?

That is just a weird picture. I mean whats the reasoning behind it?

He is 22, part of the attention seeking 'I need to post on twitter/facebook that I will be going to have a shit now' generation, so probably just showing people he is watching his favorite Turkish team in the Champions League.

Nothing to see.

Would love to be a fly on the wall during transfer discussions between our management team and scouts

I do hope we have a shortlist and we are sounding things out

after the success of buying established talent last summer I hope we buy a top midfielder alongside a younger more obscure talent like Gundogen from Nuremberg

Is there some time-warp shit going on here?

Does anyone else feel that this year we might confound all expectations and, instead of signing no centre midfielder, sign ALL the centre midfielders?

The beauty of this, from Fergie's POV, is that he would then have a perfect excuse for not playing them in centre midfield. After all, you can't play all the centre midfielders in one centre midfield.

I can see us lining up in big games something like this, with Arsenal-style wingers:

---Sneijder-Schweinsteiger---

Bender--Rafael-Park--Bender

Ando-Carrick-Martinez-Essien

-------------O'Shea-----------

When asked which position he (SAF) is looking to strengthen, the boss replied: “Not necessarily midfield. I think with top players it doesn’t matter what position they play in. I think if I get a top player in, it adds to the team and it improves it...."

Might as well give up any hopes of signing a midfielder lads. Fergie just doesnt do midfielders :(

But not necessarily not midfield.

I think Fergie's just responding to the question about "top players" - he'll take one wherever they play.

Haha fergie is definitely a FIFA fan, just signs players for the fun of it and plays them in any position! Rooney in cm, berbatov at cb, park in midfield. Who cares they are all good players

If at all we really haven't signed a central mid come september, I think the Caf will implode

Can Imagine SAF sitting with his wine glass on September 1, reading the CAF and laughing while making a troll face. :p

Somehow, what SAF said makes me feel more and more like it's going to be Roo going to midfield...and Lewandowski and/or a winger/creative midfielder-or-false-winger coming in? And who knows, Anderson given yet another season ?

But then, we've been wrong interpreting those quotes most of the time.

Gundogan and a powerful midfielder who likes to tackle.:cool::cool:

(Definitely won't happen.) :wenger:

It's gone beyond a joke if Ferguson fails to sign a midfielder this summer.

I saw this posted on another United forum before, made me laugh anyway:lol:

The lack of central midfield signings over the past few years is baffling, he's had money to spend and spent it on players who are now looking well out of place. I'm starting to think his eyes are like this as he's looking at the pitch.

Why has he been ignoring the midfield? Does he think ours is good enough? Does he think there are no players out there who can improve our midfield? Does he want to show his critics that he can win things with a "weak" midfield? How does it change things if we sack Phelan?

1) He probably rates our current options higher than others.

2) He doesn't think winning the midfield is as important as some make out. Ultimately to SAF creating and scoring opportunities matters more than controlling possession.

Probably both points are slightly true too. But we can also improve on our options certainly in that area.

That might be true, but would it hurt to bring in midfielders that can keep possession well, or are just generally better than what we have? Why not upgrade an area if it can be upgraded?

I think what SAF is saying that he will break the bank for another massive signing (like RVP) and he think that it will be a more sure way of keeping United at the top.

He can see that we can do with a quality midfielder, but if we could sign Ronaldo or Bale, that is what he is going to do. These players are not central midfielders. If they (the players mentioned and a couple of others) end up in other clubs, I'm sure he will sign a quality central midfielder.

I'd honestly rather us sign 2 good, solid midfielders than Ronaldo or Bale. The midfield situation has become that bad

I'm not really sure, but it would be hard to turn down Ronaldo or Bale. There is not many of that quality around, and they will guarantee success. But, I really hope we can raise enough Money for one of them and a solid midfielder that can play as a regular.

Strootman will be a player that is really good and will cost under 15mill. We surely have to sell to fund even him, if we sign a mega player.

I would like to get Moutinho and Gundogan much more than Bale. Probably more than Ronaldo too.

I think the truth behind us not signing a midfielder to come in as straight first choice is because he's protecting Scholes and Giggs

Fans are a bit exasperated and even obsessed about our midfield yet SAF seems very casual about it. I think both the points above are quite spot on. I think SAF thinks defenders and forwards win you games (in different ways obviously) so I think he believes there is more leeway in midfield. If we buy a 'top' player like SAF suggests I can almost guarantee it'll be a forward. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't get a CM in at all and continued with combinations of Giggs, Carrick, Cleverley, Jones, Rooney, Anderson and probably Powell. I'm sure that would look like an abundance of options to SAF.

Atm our situation on the wings is probably even worse.than our CM situation. When Nani doesn't sign his contract we have Val and Young. Giggs can still play a part and also Kagawa but still. Id love it , absolutely live it to get Bale.
Oh forgot about the Zaha lad. Well lets see how that turns out

Gary Neville stressing the importance of good midfielders on MNF!

Also saying that they're extremely hard to buy now as well

The type of CM Gary described (note his admission that they hardly exist anymore) and wingers that aren't broken are the only thing we've lacked this season imo. Maybe SAF is justified in not just buying any old CM out of desperation - but holding out for the right one. I wonder if the "wind of change" comment might mean he's got he's eye on one or two who weren't available before?

If we bought someone like Bale his sheer quality would be enough to keep us at the top - it's really disappointing to think we might not strengthen midfield though

we'll probably fall short in Europe again and we might see a more disjointed first 11 with Rooney/Jones playing a lot more there

had we brought in a top midfielder 3/4 seasons ago who knows what we could have achieved

I just realized that Carrick will be 32 by the start of next season...I thought he was slightly younger. Definitely think we'll sign someone this summer.
