Which midfielder will we sign this summer?

Juventus signed Vidal from Leverkusen for 8m and Dortmund signed Gundogan from Nuremberg for 5m. This partly annoys me but it must also prove there's plenty of talent out there at reasonable prices?

Wow...those are amazing prices. Granted, if United called the clubs regarding their players, the prices would be almost double, but I think 16m for Vidal and 10m for Gundogan are still very good prices. Can't say there is no value in the market, when those were the prices for those players.

I would love to get some hidden gem like that, and similar to Hernandez. Someone out of the blue, not even on anyone's radar.

Schneiderlin, Mccarthy and Cabaye some in league possible options that have been mentioned at lower teams.

Ander Herrera another one that has been linked with us in the past from Spain.

Then there are a few younger lads that keep being linked.

Those 3 play in the prem and would be the definition of squad additions as opposed to a real top CM to partner Carrick, so I guess given the comments today thy become plausible targets.

Herrera must be surely considering his future as Bilbao aren't going anywhere from what I've seen despite how good they were against us last season.

how about Jordy Clasie from Feyenoord, looks up to RVP and may be willing to come to us to play with his childhood hero. And he is a class player although thats based on youtube.

I've heard about him, the 'Dutch Xavi' he's being called. Not seen anything other than Youtube though, and he didn't look that exceptional in that either. He doesn't seem to be making big enough waves to be as good as some are saying though. His name isn't ringing enough bells yet, so I'd guess he isn't indeed the Dutch Xavi.

To be fair though, there were threads on both of them before the transfers. Certainly about Vidal, as everyone knew about how good of a player he was before juventus bought him. Gundogan was just a promising player then. Doubt he'd be as good if he came to us to be completely honest, but we'll never know. There have been plenty of well known names over the years though that we've missed out on, for good prices too.

Vidal was linked with a lot of top clubs before his move to Juventus, he seemed nailed on to sign for Bayern but Leverkusen prefered to sell him abroad and he only had a year left in his deal.

That's the thing about footballers - there's often not that much between an 8m and a 20m, other their name.

Boateng and Van Buyten were a big part of this all conquering Bayern team, but were both crappy City players a few years ago ;)

Given that there isn't an obvious 'world class' option ready to buy, I'd prefer if we did go for someone a little less known.

Whether he's the "Dutch Xavi" matters not. Marko Marin was hailed as the "German Messi" and Anderson as the "next Ronaldinho". Such tags really dont matter at the end of the day. I don't know anything about this lad you're talking about, but to me you don't have to be a highly acclaimed player to be the right fit for Manchester United let alone any top team.

Each team has their system and certain players who suit that system. If this lad has the right tools to enhance our midfield, let's go for it. I don't see the point in saying we must buy a player who everyone knows about. Sometimes those signings pay off and sometimes they don't. Fergie has had a torrid time with signing CMs but he got it right with Carrick. At the time, some felt Carrick was an underwhelming signing but look how that turned out. I hope Fergie gets it right this summer but he seems content at the moment which worries me.

My point is, we should looking for the right fit more than just the next top class player on our wishlist. That is, if we're trying to be realistic.

If we do sign someone I hope they have some years under their belt as an actual centre mid. I think we need an option who is ready to come in now with the main obstacle being adapting to the PL if they're from abroad. In Powell and arguably Jones we've already got young projects, even Clev has got plenty of fine tuning to do in terms of their midfield role.

Or simply, if you are doing very well in the Dutch league, I would expect people to speak about you. It isn't a name for the sake of a name. I mean, there is a reason why Messi is a big name player, while, I dunno, Gary Medel isn't really. Surely, with the numbers we have available to play in midfield, it is clear that we need someone of quality to come and improve us and take us up another level, particularly in Europe. It is highly unlikely a player who can have that sort of effect on Manchester United isn't a known quantity.

There are exceptions to everything, of course, but I'd just like the midfielder we sign, if at all, to be very good. If he is, chances are he'd be known about.

Actually, Gary Medel is a well known player. Probably the best defensive midfielder of La Liga. Carrying this shitty Sevilla version on his shoulders. Every single player knows that if they mess with him, :nervous:
Anyway, he is doomed in la liga because of the refs... in Italy or England, he will be a star. He is just as good as Vidal... and Sevilla only payed 3M euro... he will still go on the cheap, maybe 15m? max 20... still a bargain.

doesnt work that way... at all. This way of thinking is why we are missing all the talents out there. If we wait till they are "known" players, we can't even afford them. Thats what scouting is about...

Absolutely right. Just more proof that Bundasliga was being neglected and not being given the correct respect in the last couple of years. At least we paid attention to get Kagawa but there have clearly been lots of other good players available there as well. The problem now is that its absolutely undeniable that its a top league with top talent and I'm sure that now the prices will reflect that

Very good point I must say.

feck him, he is good but hopefully we'll get someone better (for us). From what I have seen he is a gifted player, very good technique but he doesn't play with heart and is afraid to go in tough challenges. Not for English football. Vidal on the other side would have been perfect for us.

Which can't be much, considering your assessment of him.

He's a great box to box player.

I wont be surprised if Juventus end up pushing him out though. They are well stocked in CM but need some serious investment in other areas of the pitch and need the money to do that. Juventus have a long history of pushing players out when the price is right.

I am not denying that he is a good player and also he is very versatile. Just I don't think that he is our type of player we need. I would like a good box to box player too but one he is more energetic and give more contribution in defense (Vidal, Gundogan, Moutinho). I like Marchisio but I really can't see him in a midfield too, especially not in a strong physical league like EPL.

I would say pretty much. About 20 times this season, probably about 50 in his career.

He's not Gattuso but saying that Marchisio doesnt have heart is kind of stupid. Juventus fans loves him and sees him as their future captain.

Because he is the next in a row Italian after Gigi retires.

No. Its because he's got heart.

He's somewhere between Pirlo and Vidal. He's less elegant but more defensive sound then the former and viceversa regarding the latter. I am more concerned about his ability to settle down in the EPL. The Serie A is played at lower tempo.

However if he manages to replicate what he does with Juve with us then he'll be a great asset.

This is a more accurate assessment of him.

He hasn't shown that he has heart that much from what I have seen. Bonnuci and Vidal would have been both more suitable captains than him (but he is from Torino so he will probably be the next captain). That doesn't mean that he isn't a good player, he is after Pirlo the best Italian midfielder and a really great one.

Anyway, I think that he would struggle to adapt in the English game and that is the main reason why I am not much for his signing, although at the moment he is better than all the midfielders we have been linked (Wynyama, Strootman and Matic).

As I said, I see him as a hardworking player. He’s not a Gattuso but he can cover the defensive role IF he’s played with another defensive minded player.

I can’t say if Marchisio would sort our issues in CM. I still think that we should still get a Wynyama type of midfielder to add the much needed steel when needed. However I see the trio Carrick-Marchisio-Rooney/Cleverley/Kagawa rather fascinating. We’d have two midfielders (Carrick – Marchisio) who can defend, attack and create chances in CM. Put Rooney/Kagawa in front of them and bloody hell, if that midfield can gel together, then we can easily compete against the likes of Barca/Bayern.

You've basically just disregarded Marchisio and then brought up Wynyama! The golf in quality is amazing. We don't need a defensive midfielder we have Carrick, we need someone to help press and retain the ball.

How well-known does a midfielder need to be to be recognised as very good? If there's some unknown quantity and he suits what we try and do at United then I'm all for bringing him in. Assuming he has the talent as well as the mental capacity to handle coming to a club like ours. If we're going to be competitive, we're going to have these talents before most other clubs do because we dont pay silly wages or extravagant transfer fees.

Had this picture lying around somewhere:

I dont disregard anyone. Marchisio is not Gattuso. He needs someone to share the defensive duties and Carrick provides that. A CM made up of Carrick and Marchisio would provide us with 2 complete CM capable of defending and create chances. When one considers the talent that such midfield can compliment (Rooney/Kagawa as the link men role or Cleverley as CM) I think that it would be a rather interesting tander.

Marchisio can replace Scholes and Ando, however, in my opinion, we still have to replace Fletcher. There's nothing wrong in bringing in someone who gives us a different approach to what we currently have ie a tough nonsense defensive midfielder who can be thrown down in the deep end to shut the doors close.
