Which midfielder will we sign this summer?

Fabregas didn't make a dream move back to Barcelona only to leave two years later, he'll stay there well into his 30s. Song is a different case, they signed him thinking he could do the job in defence when asked and he frankly can't. I could see him leaving in the Summer but it won't be to us since we never sign so-called rejects.

He went there to win trophies and because the best club in the world wanted him. If it was soo much of a dream he wouldn't have left in the first place.

I don't blame him though, when he left them they were a pretty average team with a stand-out player in Ronaldinho. They've come on leaps and bounds since while Arsenal faded badly.

That's why it's called muppetry :smirk: Don't come in here ruining everything with sense.

It's hilarious when people called him a defensive midfielder. I suspect those people never watched an Arsenal game, he couldn't defend for shit. He was however a pretty decent traditional midfielder.

Would love Wilshere but the ankle problems so early would be a concern

Coupled with the fact that he won't be moving anywhere soon and the club won't be making the mistake of selling him to another side in the league. RVP was an anomaly for a number of factors, Wilshere has his career ahead of him and for the moment anyway, values being close to his family. In the event that we do sell him in the next few years, I can only see the destination being somewhere abroad...he'd do well in Germany and Spain.

Off of @Malachians, who is currently chatting to Paddy Crerand (who obviously is only sort of in-the-know, to be fair):

Doesn't expect Fletcher to ever play for us again
Expects us to buy a major name, his pick is Luca Modric

Read into that what you will, but surprised to hear Paddy (who spends his whole life at Carrington/OT) say Fletcher is unlikely to play again.

Looks like this @Malachians guy is tweeting from California. Doubt Paddy's there.

My favourite summer muppet phrase is "Make of that what you will."

He contributes to a pretty well known footie blog (Beyond the pitch) and has done interviews with plenty of players/personalities of the game. Most likely a phone call!

Ah ok didn't knew that.

Assumed that since the transfer season is coming, the agent ITK types are back!

I find the idea of buying another centre forward nuts to be honest. I wasn't the biggest advocate of getting RVP either because I felt we were well stocked. That worked out, though how things would've been different with Rooney in his favourite position and Kagawa in his, we'll never know. Still, this would take the biscuit. It'd be curtains for Rooney too, surely.

I liked Kagawa in the midfield diamond, I thought we played well in that formation and he played his best games, outside of the hattrick, in the 4312.

So I could see Rooney and Kagawa helping Carrick, Cleverley and Jones hold down the midfield, especially if we're play a 3, or 4, man central midfield.

But add in Lewandowski and I have no idea what we'd do, unless it's the midfield diamond.

Don't really see us signing a CM at all tbh.

Ferguson believes that United may need only two players to strengthen this summer. "I don't think that we need to rebuild at all – possibly two players, if possible. It depends of course. If a player came along that we felt met our criteria, I think we'd push the boat out and get him irrespective of how many players we had," the Scot said.

I think he's hinting at Lewa and that probably means Rooney into CM. The "if possible" isn't too convincing. So yes won't really be that surprised if we end up without a CM again.

I wonder who the 'push the boat out for' is, it's as likely to be CR/Bale/Lewi as it is to be someone compeltely unknown in terms of our interest but is highly rated by SAF..

Since he's mentioned we'd go for him even if we had lots of players in the position, it's got to be Lewandowski.

To be fair, I think CR would have to be classed as a striker also, but I agree after taking that into consideration that chances are it probably is a striker...

Falcao anyone? Hasn't been confirmed to Chelsea yet has it? I think it's only rumours at this stage....

Well I'm just praying he thinks we're already well stacked in midfield and still goes for one CM :D

I don't see how you managed to take no cm from that!

Bottom line is that of Fergie sees Rooney as a central mid, and Rooney buys into the role, the play is for a front line man...whether that's Bale or Ronaldo and/or Lewandowski.

I'm really not even sure we would need ANYONE else if we brought Ronnie back home. We would have on the books Ronaldo, Rooney, Kagawa, Carrick, Valencia and van Persie. You can quibble with Valencia, but the other 5 players are top quality stuff. For depth you suddenly look to Cleverley, Young, Hernandez and Welbeck...all very decent footballers to have on the squad. For further depth, you look to Giggs and Scholes and Powell. Some would argue that Giggs should be rated higher than a "good depth" man and others would argue that Powell is on the cusp of great things. (We can forget about Ando and Nani.) So, if we really did bring in Ronaldo just how many midfielders do we really need? Roo and Kags can play that pull the strings role, Kagawa perhaps even making mincemeat (which apparently is something people really do eat, especially in the American midwest and South) of Rooney as an attacking central midfielder slash forward.

Just one truly WORLD CLASS player -- a proven warrior at the very highest level -- will get us there, amigos. One galactico will do. And besides, the shirt sales alone will more than cover the 60m+ plus fee we'd have to pay bring him home. But if we must sell Chicharito to make room for Lewandowski, it would break my heart (my family is from Guadalajara), but business is business and Lewandowski is one ferocious dude inside the box.

We've got the best young goalkeeper in the world, the right back slot sorted, 5 CB's, Evra, Buttner and Fabio, Zaha coming in to join Nani, Valencia and Young out wide and Rooney, Van Persie, Hernandez, Welbeck and Kagawa as forwards yet you are disregarding his identification of "two players" as a clear sign of not signing a midfielder.

Part of me thinks it'd be ridiculous to sign Lewandowski and to play Rooney in centre mid/wide midfield.

The other part of me would be fecking excited if we did that, because we'd have such a muppet-tastic line-up.

In Fergie's mind we also have Carrick, Cleverley, Fletcher, Giggs, Rooney, Jones, Anderson, Powell, Scholes for 2 CM spots...

Not to say there's not a problem with that selection for many reasons, it's that we've had this situation for 4 years and Fergie clearly hasn't identified the problem himself, or chooses to ignore it. There's a good chance this summer follows a similar pattern, with him desperate to blow our budget on a big name striker, and a winger is also inevitable when Nani leaves.

Some rumours that Strootman is a done deal to be in the premier league. Could it be for us?

I think something is lined up for him. We're talking about the captain of his national team at 23, and yet you hardly see him linked with anyone. That's the kind of quiet lead up to a transfer i expect from the club. I don't see why he would go to Liverpool or Everton. AC Milan seem the only potential rival for his signature.

His agent has stated that a move to the Premier League is a 'done deal'.

It's probably Spurs for 7 or 8 million and he'll be one of the best midfielders in the prem like Dembele. Then we'll spend the season bumping the thread wondering why we didn't sign him.
