Song isn't even really rated very highly so I don't see how you can call him overrated. He was immense for Arsenal last season, I wouldn't really call him a defensive midfielder anymore anyway, he has far more in his locker than that. Wilshire was injured last season, but what about the season before? At 18 he already looked brilliant. I think it's fair to say he is potentially one of the worlds best, who do we have we can say that about?

Here's how I'm looking at it now. I'm excited about the kids coming through...massively so. If Fergie hasn't identified the player he wants to bring in fine.
I don't mind having a transitional season either...but for the love of god don't bring in cut price shite and let the kids have a go.
I'm happy for Powell to have a go. I'm happy for Petrucci to get his chance and I'm hoping to see Robbie Brady get a few games. If Tunners doesn't go on loan and he is biting in the challenge let's have a look...see if he can give us something different.
I want a world class central midfielder...but if we don't get one I'd like to see some of the kids given a real chance.

Tunners is exactly a kind of midfielder we need in some of the matches. Strong, tough bastard who is good technically.

I'd still be concerned...but if we're not going to address such an obvious flaw we may as well give our hightly rated kids some minutes.
He needs to be careful mind. We have a big chance of playing with ten men if he's not too careful.

Would have been apt had we been willing to trust our youngster in games. We seem to prefer Park and RAfael to these very talented CM players we have.

I was referring more to Pogba there rather than Tunncliffe. Made no sense picking Park and Rafael ahead of him. A square peg in a round hole is a square peg, full international or not.
If Song was asked to play like a DM he'd done a better job shielding the defense, at the very least in terms of positioning but clearly Wenger has given enough freedom for him to become a creative midfielder.

Park is NEVER a central midfielder on any level. It's like saying Will Keane has proven nothing...so if Rooney, Cheech, Welbeck and Berbatov are injured lets put Carrick up front. He's got tons of experience and has played international football.
Fergie dropped a massive, massive bollock at home to Blackburn playing two players who have never been familiar with playing in the centre of a two man midfield. A fecking massive bollock.
Because we wanted him to play as a defensive central midfielder so we picked a defender to do the job. Not for the first time either. I personally loved him there. If we ever have the need to play a stiker who has to doa defensive job then yes we may play our versatile RB.
Personally though I reckon David De Gea could do a job there in that striker role.
So if there was a crisis at the position again this season, you'd play the full international Young and the RB Rafael there over an unproven Tuncliffe right?

That's his way of telling us that he's already bought us a midfielder so we can stop going on about needing one. Our next purchase will probably be another winger/forward. He likes those.
Kagawa is a #10 or an attacking midfielder, if we use him in midfield it'll be in 433 so we'll still need two players beside him.
Carrick is our only reliable midfielder. Scholes and Giggs should be gone at the end of season which is going to leave us with 3 senior midfielders - you need 5 at very least. Not to mention Cleverley and Anderson are very injury prone and unproven.
No other top European club has a midfield as bad as this one. Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Inter, Chelsea, Arsenal, Dortmund, Bayern and City have comfortably better midfields and it's not a slight difference. Spurs too.

But even if you believe in quality and reliability of Anderson and Cleverley, which is frankly difficult, we're still short in numbers. Surely that's certain and not debatable?
As I said, we're fine in numbers, it all comes down to how players develop and injuries (or rather less of them), and what Sir Alex' plans are for certain young players.
I don't think our midfield is nearly as bad as people are making out. We have Carrick, Ando, Cleverley and Scholes as our first choice four that can play in a two man midfield. All technically gifted players. I think Ando and Cleverley have been unlucky with injuries, hopefully they'll have a bit more luck this season.
Jones has shown he can do a very good job in there, especially against mid and lower table teams (which is the majority of our calendar). In a three man midfield we can also add Kagawa and Giggs into the mix. Powell is sure to get some chances to impress off the bench.
Yes, we could do with a big signing for that area of the pitch but I really hope Cleverley stays fit and gets the chance to fully develop. If he does, we will all be glad we placed our faith in him.
