What represents a good summer now?

Still the same, I cannot believe a club of Utd's stature is struggling to sign a CM, given how long it has been a problem area for us. I think the double departure of Fergie and Gill has really destroyed us in the transfer market so far. Woodward is just as much to blame as Moyes is IMO.

There's a difference between struggling to sign a midfielder and struggling to prise away one of the top midfielders from one of the top clubs in the world. SAF and Gill struggled to do it for long enough.

Hopefully we'll get some sunny weather while it's still summer. That'd be okay.

Gill departed, Fergus still in the club. Nothing has been destroyed, everything is in shape from the previous season, except Januzaj and Zaha stepping up to first squad.

Varela, I won't even mention...

Can't agree. It was an audacious attempt to sign a key member of Barca's squad. That was never going to be easy. At least we tried and you can't fault the club for that.

convince rooney to stay.

sign fellaini. at least we have a giant to attack the ball inside the opponents six yard box from van persie's corners.

i cannot believe i am going to settle for this..:(

The best thing about this summer will be the end of it, when the football starts and all the bell ends can start having a go at Moyes for the shite football we play and poor results, rather than our "embarrassing" transfer dealings.

Another good thing this summer is the amount of cnuts who have shown what a dramatic bunch of whiny, spoilt little manbitches they are, so their opinions on the club can pretty much be disregarded from here on in. It's the silver linings you have to look for.

Sums up my thoughts at the moment mate, well said.

I think we'll have to wait a year for a new creative cm to become available, but I'm more worried about cover for Carrick.
We need a player that can jump in and play his role to a decent level in the nasty even he's injured.

If Fellaini signs, can he do that? Only time will tell for sure, but I'm a little hesitant to find out.

What a bunch of prissy little drama queens some of you are.

Sign Fellani
Shoot Rooney in the face and use his skin to make a blanket to keep SAFs Horse warm, turn Rooneys horse into tescoburgers.
Tell Januzaj, Lingaard Powell Kagawa and Zaha this is their time to shine.

Unless something drastically changes we are going to probably end up with Fellaini, and let's face it, that is disappointing. They may have failed in CM in the last couple of years but RvP, Hernandez, Kagawa etc. Fergie and Gill worked well in the transfer market, you cannot doubt that.

Gill departed, Fergus still in the club. Nothing has been destroyed, everything is in shape from the previous season, except Januzaj and Zaha stepping up to first squad.

Scholes gone, Fletcher still nowhere near a come back, Carrick surely not gonna be so lucky with injuries this time around (touch wood). You cannot honestly say right now we have that ability to lure players in the transfer market as we did in previous years.

Did our pursuit of Fabregas need to be so public though? I can't remember us ever being so public with a transfer. And the timing of it was really, really terrible especially as things really heated up just after Thiago left.

I understand people are trying to positive, but you can't deny on the transfer front we have been disappointing thus far. I don't understand why you would need to defend that. It's not like I'm saying Moyes overall has been shambolic - our performances in pre-season have been decent and such.

Amazing how much Fergie and Gill's stock has risen as transfer operators, considering it was only recently that everyone was poking fun at them for their 'value' and 'warchest' comments.

Fans are hypocrites.

Quite right sir.

Most are actually saying it's Fergie's fault that our midfield issue hasnt been adressed for so many years.

It was nice to look at Scholesy's ingenious passing but he really wasn't our driving team force in his last season. Fletcher thing is almost like some kind of a tragedy, I agree and I hope he won't end like Hargreaves.

I can honestly say, we could sign Strootman, Fellaini, Wanyama, Cabaye and few others, without smallest problems. Instead, we pursued absolute elite footballer, Cesc Fabregas, who's very emotionally attached to his home club. It was a right move.

Transfer window still on, with lots of possibilities.

They wanted to make a splash and it didn't work. It was a departure from our normal low-key dealings in the transfer market but I'm sure Woodward and Moyes had their reasons. I'm not defending our actions in the transfer market. We've blown hot and cold on this front for a number of years now and it was nice to see the club make such a bold move.

Yup.

Do this:

Keep Rooney and Nani.
Go ahead and sign Fellaini.
Open the door for the youngsters.
Collect the English prem trophy.

Problem solved and worries abated.

Still plenty of midfielders available if we're willing to splash the cash... also swapping Rooney for Mata is fine by me.

Luiz Gustavo with hopefully Modric or Marchisio would be a brilliant summer and still very feasible.

We'd all prefer someone like Bastian or Cesc who has everything, but if we have to choose between an agile creative midfielder and a powerhouse I'd go for the latter. We've got Kagawa with a year under his belt, Januzaj and Lingard could also make the step up this season. Fellaini would be a great acquisition for us. I like him as a player, don't get the "he's shit" brigade at all. I'd hate to see him sign for City or Chelsea, wouldn't you?

Keeping Rooney isn't just a must because our summer has "turned to shit" as some seem to think. It was always a stupid idea to entertain selling him to Chelsea unless we'd get a monster fee that would directly be used to finance the purchase of another monster player.

Wouldn't mind seeing him demoted to the reserves for the first month of the season, I mean, world cup year and all, he's not going to destroy his career like that...

Surely that being the case, you lower you sights a bit. If our former duo couldn't sign top midfielder then why did Woodward and Moyes think they could. They have been remarkably naive.

We know that, but do United. They will either sign someone out of left field or the safe option of Fellaini.

Well we tried to sign one of best midfielders in the world, that would have been perfect for us. I still think theres hope we will get someone suitable rather then the "settling" attitude everyone seems to be having.

Has their stock regarding big transfers factually risen? Stupid if that's the case. It's hardly been long either.

At the very least we still need cover for Carrick. Fellaini and Cabaye would both be decent buys considering they can cover for him and play next to him. That's pretty much the best I'm hoping for currently. Nani signing a new contract would be great. I don't really care what happens with Rooney, selling him would be ideal and I don't really care who we sell him to.

Do we? Or do we just think we know? On the surface of it I cant argue with any of those signings but its a tad arrogant to presume that we know better than the current staff/scouts whats better for the club.

I'm surprised at the lack of Christian Eriksen talk to be honest. Young player but has shown that he isn't just a promising potential to an extent. Is available, club would probably be willing to part with him for not a ludicrous bid. Or am I missing something?

Best post so far.

Nah, Moyes has never heard of them, since they weren't on the radar for Everton and he knows no football outside of that.

What does that post even mean anyway, DT? That you/us know about these players and know that they're available and would be good signings, but the club know less than you/us? Is it just another way to make a silly dig at the club and those running it?

I've no idea why so many "supporters" are keen to run the club down this summer. That's not support.

Hopefully Sir Alex was right about Powell being a central midfielder, I would be happy to see him given games next to Carrick over the likes of Giggs and Jones.

Go easy on DT. She is only a girl :)

two sentences later...

That's not being a drama queen that's a legitimate solution to a legitimate problem. Being a drama queen is "OH NOES If rooney goes to Chelsea it will be a disaster, we might not win the league for ONE WHOLE SEASON OMG!?!?!

In no particular order:

Renew Nani's contract - at this stage I don't think he'll leave, but I want him tied-down.

Keep Rooney - I don't even care at this point if he plays for the first team or the reserves, but we cannot sell to Chelsea or City, for what I would regard as obvious reasons.

Sign a central-midfielder - same message as since the 2009 final, though then I wanted one new player there, now I think two at least are needed. I'm never been desperate for a "superstar" signing here as we very, very rarely sign such player in any position - just a good solid option or two to add to what is there already (which is getting less and less impressive with every passing season).

Surely - surely - there has to be a central-midfielder or two in say a top 6 side in Germany, France, Spain or Portugal that we could recruit within our budget? I just want a new option or two. Somebody rather than nobody would improve the current situation for the coming season; we can look at the area again next summer if the club decides to try to take the Champions League seriously again, but for right now just bring in someone for the central-midfield.
