What represents a good summer now?

There were lots of factors as to why we won the league last season but SAF and our opposition underperforming were certainly among them. Even the most blinkered United fan must be able to see that.

Of course City had a bad season compared to the one before but even then they only beat us on goal difference, it's not like we have been heavily outperformed by any team in all those years now that we have our midfield problems.

The thing is I think we exaggerate our midfield problems sometimes and act like there would be no way we can compete with this lot, which just simply isn't true, at least in the league.

If we signed one of the following I'd be very happy:
Modric
Verrati
Vidal
Pogba
Either Bender
Gundogan
Eriksen

Wouldn't be epicly disappointed if we ended up with just Fellaini (or Cabaye, I think we were linked with him at one point) because we need a midfielder that badly.

...which is in contrast to my thoughts on the Champions League matches last season. I thought in the group stage that the opposition ripped through our midfield. Conversely, against Real, we played well. Phil Jones, anyone?

Like I said "in the league". Not talking about Europe. We had trouble in midfield for two years in a row now, even though they really stepped up their game against Real.

If, by some miracle, Spurs manage to hold on to Bale, then I think they may have a team as good as ours with the additions of Paulinho, Soldado and Chadli. If Arsenal get Suarez and Gustavo, then they would have probably significantly closed the gap. So I think we may need to lok past just 'City and Chelsea have improved'.

Usually, I'd just trust Fergie to find a way to stay ahead, but as much as I actually rate Moyes, I do think it would be a good idea to ensure he has all the tools he needs. Sadly, I don't see that being possible anymore, short of signing Ronaldo. With the right additions, I'd more than back Moyes to see off Jose and Pellegrini. It may be just beyond him though without strengthening (not to mention potentially weakening).

Even against Chelsea and city we didn't have it in us to take them on in midfield. We sat back, absorbed pressure and hit them in the break using our wise players. We can rarely match the top teams in a head on battle of midfields. The home game vs real was such a refreshing sight last season because we were actually taking them on rather than backing off all the time. I enjoyed that game more than most last season despite the result.

You're right, we do exaggerate it, probably because we hold ourselves to higher standards and we've watched that little ginger fella dictating most games he played in for the last 15+ years.

The club has to send out a message with Rooney - I don't see how we can sell to Chelsea without this window being deemed an abject failure.

Yeah I agree with this really, which I never expected to. It has been a bad transfer window and selling Rooney to Chelsea would significantly add to that.

On the actual idea of selling Rooney - I was one of the few who wouldn't have minded Chelsea getting him if they offered a decent fee, but I always assumed we were going to significantly strengthen as well by bringing in someone like Fabregas, or Thiago.

Now that hasn't happened, selling Chelsea Rooney and significantly improving them would be a really bad move. Even if it was around £45million I'm not sure its a good idea, we would be weaker from last season and they would be far stronger.

Oh feck knows, lets buy Suarez. I think he is actually the kind of player we could do with. Very loyal and dedicated to his club, can make things happen.

Im clearly kidding here so joke is on you if you fecking take the bait btw

Of course. We all know we are missing someone like Scholes but replacing him was always going to be a really hard task, we brought some young players in we hoped could fill his shoes but it didn't happen so now we have to invest big but it's also a matter of fact that the best midfielders are all really hard to get due to their importance for their own teams of course and the fact that other big teams are chasing them as well.

I think it's time the UK finally allowed human cloning so we can just clone the ginger genius. :D

At this point Ill be satisfied with us signing Felliani + Rooney AND Nani sign a new contract showing some commitment to the cause in the process. Beggars cant be choosers.

Keep what we've got. Give the kids a chance, and hope to feck that this is Anderson's year.

I don't want us buying players just to make up the numbers and clog the squad. Like City did last year with Rodwell and Sinclair.

Wont happen. Ever.

By saying "We are short in midfield" Moyes clearly acknowledged the problem. The problem is that there's no bid for Fellaini and that comes straight from Martinez.

It could be someone else... Should we really start the guessing game ? Is there even so much time for this, now ?

Too many questions in the transfer department. People really starting to lose a track what's going on, especially after "Everything is set for a big transfer, this summer".

This team doesn't really need big numbers of players. It should be all about the quality, no matter the financial cost.

Keep Rooney and sign 2 decent midfielders, there has to be players out there to strengthen the squad.

What a stupid summer though, there was the totally random 12m bid for Banes and then the 6 week chase of Fabregas, a player we never had a chance of getting. Do they actually have a plan in place? I'm expecting the 'we have a great squad and will push on with the players we have' quotes to come next just to top off a completely uninspiring summer.

If Moyes rides into Barcelona on horseback, sacks the city then rides home and flykicks every last one of you in the heart.

Buy Fellaini and another creative CM, even if it's not a big name. Get rid of Rooney, but not to a rival in the EPL. That would make me happy.

Is Christian Erikssen still available? If so, him and Fellaini would be a brilliant summer.

I have to agree. Fabregas saga took too long to not figure out the plan B.

There must be something more to what Moyes said, few days ago about 'some new players'.

We will surely be paying over the odds whoever we are going to buy next now! So much for 'value' ... will reek of desperation with 3 weeks to the transfer window closing.

This is looking like a pretty bad start for Moyes-Woody pair.

We make do with what we've got (including Rooney) and we examine whether Premiership experience is that big a deal given how average most Premiership midfielders are. Next summer we go shopping again.

I think getting through the rest of the window without any of our players handing in a transfer request would be great.

Depends... When we bought Berbatov, a 29 years old player in the last hours of window, he really helped us in defending the crown, not to mention, reaching another CL final.

Still, there's no clues who will it be, this summer...

I think Moyes reputation has been hurt by this fiasco. His impression will be one of that who can deal with mid-level players but not strong enough to attract the superstars.

He clearly did mean that, which is why we are signing Fellaini. Followed quickly by Mertesacker and then Crouch.

The best thing about this summer will be the end of it, when the football starts and all the bell ends can start having a go at Moyes for the shite football we play and poor results, rather than our "embarrassing" transfer dealings.

Another good thing this summer is the amount of cnuts who have shown what a dramatic bunch of whiny, spoilt little manbitches they are, so their opinions on the club can pretty much be disregarded from here on in. It's the silver linings you have to look for.

We still need two midfielders. Anything less will be a failure.

I don't think we are going to sign a midfielder other than Fellaini and even Fellaini seems like a long shot, we'd have got him by now if he were anywhere near the top of our wish list. Looking across Europe I can't imagine there are too many good available midfielders around at the minute, we'll have to do with someone decent.

Still the same, I cannot believe a club of Utd's stature is struggling to sign a CM, given how long it has been a problem area for us. I think the double departure of Fergie and Gill has really destroyed us in the transfer market so far. Woodward is just as much to blame as Moyes is IMO.
