What is Luis Suarez worth?

Lionel Messi has built his reputation by scoring most of his goals against inferior opposition. The same Lad is surrounded by much better players, playing in a much better side. It's not as though we were playing Accrington Stanley in a meaningless friendly. We were playing a Premiership side, & 3 points were at stake. I seriously doubt you'll see any striker score 4 goals of that quality in a competitive match this season.

The Messi comparison is way off, he scores for fun in the CL.

Well that's hardly surprising is it ? Considering he plays in it on a regular basis.

But if you're implying that Messi does it against much better opponents, then let me remind you that Suarez has a superior international record: 39 goals in 71 appearances compared to Messi's 37 goals in 83 games. Not to mention that Suarez was a key figure in helping Uruguay become South American champions not that long ago.

Falcao has gone down a level or 2 since his move. Atletico are a better team without him and Monaco seem to be playing better right now without him too. Suarez is currently better than both.

The Falcao who was scoring for fun before the international break? Atletico being a better team is no slight on him, that just means the team has improved and players have stepped up since he left, Costa was not the same player, they signed Villa, it is Simeone's third year with the team etc etc. Monaco are playing better without him? A grand total of two games against one team just above relegation on a 5 game losing streak the other against a mid table side who have not won in four, hardly the best games to judge. I disagree, apologies for coming across as snarky, I don't just think anyone who watches him play could come to the conclusion that a) He has dropped a level or two since his move b) Suarez is much better than him, they are on the same level imo. Falcao is a quality striker, he runs the channels, has great technique, holds up the ball, he works hard and never stops moving and he is clinical. They are different types of players. Both world class.

I wonder why Suarez wasn't getting this praise after the Arsenal or Hull games. Crazy what 4 goals against Norwich will do, people really have short term memories.

Accurate assessment of Suarez's performance...but what's that all about?

Everyone that plays in the champions league scores in it for fun?

Messi's reputation isn't built from scoring against shit opposition, he's scored against virtually all the top clubs in the world on the biggest stages. feck knows why you thought otherwise.

Messi has scored more goals than anyone else in the knockout stages of the CL. And domestically, more goals than anyone ever against Real Madrid. And scored in two CL finals.

He built his reputation by scoring against everyone all the time.

So neither of you feel that Messi has had an advantage by being part of a Barca set-up that alongside himself, has brought through, at pretty much the same time, a few other world-class players that became one of the greatest club sides of all time ? & it's blindingly obvious that most of his goals have come against inferior opposition. If they're the best in the world, then that means there's no-one better. It's also blindingly obvious that when you're playing in such a great side, you'll have more of the ball, play more on the front foot, & get more chances. My point has been to counter the assertion that Suarez's 4 goals the other night needs to be played down because of the quality of the opposition. He currently plays with a bunch of lads who are not fit to be on the same pitch as him. He showed in the Copa America 2 years ago just how good he is when he's got other top class players around him. They won the competition in Messi's home country. Where was the golden boy then without his Barca team-mates ?

Indeed.

Why doesn't Pedro, Villa, Neymar etc. score like Messi? A fair share of his goals are through his individual quality. Good players benefeit form playing with good players, you can't knock Mess for that. He would be the best player in the world even if he scored half the goals he does, no player can change the game the way Messi can. He has been carrying Barca the last season or so too, he is the main reason they won La Liga and reached the Champions League semi-final last year. Uruguay have a much more balanced team than Argentina do, sad but unfortunately true. Argentina are also improving as a team, Messi is a big reason for that. He plays a different role for them, he is not needed to score but to create and control the game in the oppositions final third. So looking at their international goal record is somewhat lazy.

Messi has scored against and impressed in the biggest of games and has done so consistently something Suarez does not have on his cv. He doesn't have the teammates to put him in a position to shine in the bigger games you may argue, so if/when he eventually moves we will get to judge them better.

Doesn't the bolded section simply endorse my point that a lot of Messi's achievements are down to the players he has around him ? If he's capable of repeating his Barca form at international level, then why play him in a different role ? Diego Maradona virtually single-handedly won Argentina the World Cup back in 1986. Maybe we'll see Lionel do something similar in Brazil next year eh ?

Didn't want to de-rail the Gareth Bale transfer thread, so thought I'd mention his latest rumoured value here. Real apparently bid £86m? Fo' shizzle?

So Bale is now £45,999,999.00 better than Saurez? Didn't feel like it last season. Bale's valuation will not go down well with Wenger. Rodgers should now deffo be looking at the Ronaldo price I've been spouting for Suarez.

My post from July. Like Kraftwerker will no doubt soon be along to say "throw enough sh*t some will stick".

You can even forget Ronaldo money. Barring any stupidity Suarez gets up to from now until summer (world cup coming up, lets see if he fancies being benched for 10 games before Brazil), he is obviously the next Galactico.

And each and every new Galactico has the world transfer fee broken to attain them.

With the signing of Bale and the wages of Ronaldo, can Madrid afford to break the transfer record?

Liverpool would be crazy not to ask for something close to the Bale fee.Real Madrid would have to pay a lot of money, but I do think he'll leave, definately if Liverpool don't make the CL and I think Aguero will make this his last summer in England also.

If we don't make top four I think Suarez will go for less, around £70m after a hissy fit all summer. Can't see our owners letting him go for less after this season's performance.

Scoring goals is not Argentina's problem, they have an abundance of attackers. They don't have a world class player who can play the 10, Messi can. I think the level of International football is too high for him to 'single-handedly' take them to the World cup. Argentina have a poor defence and Brazil, Germany and Spain have better teams. If any player can, it's Messi though, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Motherfecker scored 4 against us in a knockout CL match!

You know well why there was a massive difference in price between the two. Its not a reflection of their comparative abilities. Mind you Suarez has gone up another gear for mine, and if he has an incident free season then there's no way Liverpool shouldn't be asking for Bale/Ronaldo kinds of money.

He's an awesome player it must be said.

It would be quite frightening to see a PL team with Suarez, Aguero and Rooney in it.

He'd score 50 a season easy playing for either Barca or Real. Hopefully he fecks off there soon enough. Though surely Bayern would fancy him too?

fecking ridiculously good player. On current form he's up there with the very best in the world, and he's clearly the best player in the PL at the moment.

More goals than anyone else in the league AND more assists than anyone else, despite missing the first 5 games of the season.

And to top it all off he's exciting and entertaining to watch.

I really hope he fecks off to Madrid or Barca or he will get Liverpool back into the CL and beyond eventually.

Best player in the league. I don't care whether he is a cnut or not, and I'm sure most scousers don't care either.

So, it wouldn't surprise me if Real de Madrid breaks the record transfer fee again next season. Liverpool's decision to keep him at all costs looks that already is paying dividents.

Is that true? :wenger:
