The major (and realistic) targets for this season that would represent a good outcome given the recent trajectory of the club are the following:
1. Top four or five finish (CL qualification). (Quant.)
2. Domestic cup or Europa League trophy. (Quant.)
3. Rebalancing of the squad, removal of unwanted players, reduction in wage bill. Smart, progressive, young signings. (Quant./Qual.)
4. The establishment of a definitive and clear style of play. (Qual.)
5. Significant statistical improvement of KPI’s such as number of goals scored, conceded, and chances created (Xg), number of shots faced. (Quant.)
6. A demonstrable improvement in club culture, standards of excellence, atmosphere within the club. (Qual.)
7.The emergence of a clear plan for stadium redevelopment/construction. (Qual/Quant.)
8. A vast improvement on medical and sport science outcomes. (Quant.)
9. A significant improvement on recruitment returns on investment and opportunity. (Quant.)
10. Innovation. I would like to see industry leading thinking breaking new or barely trodden ground in on pitch performance (set piece coaching, sport science, player performance tracking, injury prevention and rehabilitation), and off pitch outcomes (commercial and strategic partnerships, the integration of new technology). (Quan/Qual.).
In order to be successful, I believe we need a balance of quantitative and qualitative metrics by which we assess the performance of the club as a whole. The qualitative measurement is particularly relevant for on pitch performance. However, to date I haven’t seen a true embrace of quantitative measurement and methodologies for outcomes from this club, and that is something I would like to see change. We have gone to enormous trouble and expense to build a state of the art data science department from scratch, developing proprietary software in the process. Ironically, Dominic Jordan, the man responsible for it all just left the club; but nevertheless, I would like to see us run with that this season and develop it further and integrate it into everything we do as a club. Getting quality, reliable and easily digestible data is the cornerstone of being able to make good decisions. The club is pretty cagey about a lot of this stuff, but I hope to see more evidence of it this season.
