It would be made up university degree studies wouldn't it?

Mordaunt sticking the boot in now. I’ll be shocked if Truss lasts until Christmas.

Pull the string and see what rehearsed phrase comes out. Question is irrelevant!

Would have loved the journalist to ask "Does it even matter what question I ask you?".

Meanwhile, in the real world. Mordaunt's Voting Record...

Almost always voted for a reduction in spending on welfare benefits
50 votes for, 3 votes against, 11 absences, between 2012–2022.

Generally voted against raising welfare benefits at least in line with prices
2 votes for, 5 votes against, between 2013–2022.

Establishment Tories are spooked

At risk at coming across as right wing, why should benefits be increased in line with inflation if my wages (civil servant) are not?

Not right wing, but like our PM I would amend the basis of your question slightly.

I'd say it isn't a zero sum game and civil servants should get a pay rise, given they have been underpaid for 12 years.

But we have the lowest benefits provision in the OECD and 40% of universal credit recipients are in work, showing for many they are not being paid enough to live on. The recipients are most affected by inflation and have the least to live on.

Because pay in the job market is largely determined by supply and demand.

Welfare is a safety net and not linking it to inflation would be a real terms reduction, do those people suddenly need less money?

I'm surprised IDS has said that out loud as whilst its obvious that's very much not the usual Tory line.

Both should happen. They want you to be angry at those who have less than you.

Fair points. I'm not angry about it. I am not against benefits being in line with inflation whatsoever to be honest. Just a moment of bitterness.

My agreed upon pay rise voted for by unions was something like 3%. My family already lives month to month as is, our mortgage has gone up £130 because of the interest rate rises and that's because we were lucky enough to remortgage and get a new fixed rate the day before (possibly the morning before) the Bank of England's interest hike last month.

I might be on benefits by the end of this winter if I don't get better pay, though. It's all just so crap at the moment, my wife had pay rises earlier in the year and I had my back pay in January from last year's incremental increase from the previous April and we have still not been in a position to be able to save money due to the increased cost of living. It wears you down so much.

Tory MPs are terrified about the poll numbers and are aware as things stand there are almost no safe tory seats.

So out of nowhere several of them have started to develop morals and empathy, talking about it being wrong to not update benefits to match inflation, wrong to reward the richest in society , apologising to the EU and Ireland for their behaviour , praising the BLM movement etc.

It's so obvious , they are truly pathetic.

Do we think Truss will survive past Christmas? Labour so far ahead in the polls they should be calling for a GE

Seriously, establishment Tories are up to something.

You should be bitter. And angry. We all should.

The Tories have been in power for 12 years, hollowing out public services and communities with a form of austerity which was predicted at the time would not balance the budget or bring down the national debt.

Millions of people have been impoverished, millions use food banks to feed their families, tens of millions are living month to month, and somehow this Government has done all that whilst increasing the national debt by £1.5 trillion.
