Westminster Politics

A Tory MP said he quit his ministerial role because he could not afford to pay his mortgage on a salary of £118,300.

Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman resigned as science minister in November.

In a blog post, he said he stood down: "Because my mortgage rises this month from £800pcm to £2,000, which I simply couldn't afford to pay on a ministerial salary."

Downing Street said it had "no plans to change our approach to ministerial pay".

What a shame. If only he had a job where he could have made a difference to the country's economy and to the mortgage payments of people.
Take home pay calculator says he gets over £6k a month

Oliver Dowden has just said everything would have been tickety-boo if Anderson had just apologised.

Hopefully the Tories do end up like UKIP and Labour become the default cenre-right party. Room for an actual transformative party to fill the space.

Or we become a right wing distopia were you get to choose between Hitler or Franco as PM.

Tories morphing into UKIP. Labour morphing into Tories. Good times!
The thing about your only principle being to remain at the centre is that you move right/left by default when a party's extreme faction takes over. Labout are currently to the right of the right of the Tory/Lib Dem coalition. Imagine that.

Why do posters keep acting like those who are worried about what Starmer says and does are essentially bolsheviks who want hardcore communism? Hard left this and hard left that. Utopia? What are you banging on about? The guy hasn't got a socialist bone in his body, so why would people who value fairness vote for a guy who has his track record?

If he was in charge of the Libdems and they were on the verge of a huge majority, I doubt any of us Leninist-Stalinist-Trots would give two shits. But he's in charge of the main socialist party and he's just going to be a better Tory than the Tories. That's it. He's already bent the knee to Murdoch. He's an apartheid apologist. He's gutted the left of the party. He's lied, backtracked and u-turned like he was the second coming of Boris Johnson. He's got principles but, like the old joke goes, if you don't like them he has others. How can people think he's going to be any different from the tories when he's in favour of pretty much the same things, and his main criticism of them is that they haven't done what they said they would, but he will?

I think you're going to be very disappointed but I hope that it's me who is wrong. I really do.
This absolutely nails it for me.

I guess since she doesn't have a future in UK politics anymore, Truss wants in on the grift-train overseas, like Farage etc.

Might work out for her, the CPAC/QAnon audience are quite gullible.

Those lot think anyone with a british accent is clever so long as they aren’t trying to tax them.

That's it exactly. Queen of the morons, for the morons.

The Tories focusing on culture wars and stoking divisions, seems to be failing and back-firing.

It's only shining a light on their own record re immigration, and their huge failure to come close to meeting their own repeated, cast-iron pledges to drastically cut net migration. That in turn is angering more and more people on the right of the political spectrum and / or who are socially conservative, and persuading them to switch to Reform, stay at home or maybe even in some cases return to Labour if they switched in 2017 or 2019.

When they bang on about 'stopping the boats', many members of the 'target audience' are simply responding that they've been in power for 14 years, and are questioning why they've failed to 'tackle' that issue, why net migration has increased under their watch, and why they've repeatedly broken their own promises (they stupidly set completely unfeasible targets to keep their back-benchers, swivelled-eye loon party members and the right wing media outlets happy) to drastically cut it.

And they can't get away with blaming the 'woke, lefty opposition' (to quote their standard claptrap) for scuppering their plans, given the size of their comfortable working parliamentary majorities since 2019, on top of the fact they've been in power for since 2010.

And of course their credibility re managing the economy has been shot to pieces. So they've complely snookered themselves.

Absolutely, she's got a book coming out so she's trying to drum up interest by talking bullshit to an empty room.

Can the West Be Saved? Liz Truss, the former Conservative prime minister of Great Britain, fears that’s an open question.

During her ten years at the highest levels of the British government, she often found that she was the only conservative in the room. She witnessed, first-hand, the machinations of the global left, who would like nothing more than to impose corporate state–socialism on the world.

Freedom is at risk, she warns, and the Conservative Party in Britain—and the Republican Party in the United States—urgently need to shape up and defend it.

Can't imagine there are many in the UK paying £28 to read this, so pop to the states and start talking about the deep state to shift a few copies.

Damage limitation.
I thought this was poor too, but was reminded they're not allowed to write its an Islamaphobic reason because of impartiality. They were told it was over comments made by the party so that's what they went with.

They've also been under fire in the past by conservatives for not calling Hamas terrorists.

Versus what?

“I’ll happily vote for a Party that has zero chance of gaining power in this political system, allow the Tories to potentially scrape through for another five years, and if they do I get to blame Labour!”

Is that about right?
Starmer has self destructed any promises of unity in the Labour party.

Yet another broken promise.

Yeah, that's always about the size of it. Basically, give me utopia and unachievable manifesto pledges so I can feel warm and fuzzy.

Oh, they didn't get elected, well it's someone else's fault.
As a pose to, get elected at all costs then enact exactly the same policies that the Tories would have. So you can feel like you've won.

Pointless.

Avoid the 2 major parties.

Or at the very least accept that there is barely any difference between them and Starmer is more right wing than David Cameron was in 2010.

You realize that very David Cameron is literally in this cabinet right now?
Not Keir. Not Tories.

You?
Labour. I want the tories out. That should be the goal. Starmer can leave at a later date and a more palatable leader can take over. But I'd rather that happen with labour in power than waiting another 5 years for a general election. It's that simple for me.

I wish Labour were more left wing than they are. I wish the SNP weren't hilariously incompetent at everything other than giving us free prescriptions and uni fees (and waving little plastic flags around). I wish my knob was nine inches long.

But, alas, here I stand with only eight inches of knob and the frustrating choice between the Tories again or literally the only party other than the Tories who can get elected. Anything else would be sabotage at this point

Isnt it more tactical to vote for the biggest competitor to Torys in your constituency?
