Westminster Politics 2024-2029

It seems to work for the Tories and Reform.

If you were right, labour deflectors would vote greens or libdems
Reform are fascists. The Tories are at their lowest point in their history. Meaning that the Tories appeasing fascists hasn't worked as well as they'd hoped. The same is now happening with Labour.

They've managed to turn a landslide victory into a full blown disaster
What disaster? Starmer is pressing ahead with his plans.

Stick to your guns Sir Keir; when all sides are 'belly-aching' about what you are doing, then you know you are going down the right path.

It is a labour failure. They've managed to turn a landslide victory into a full blown disaster by just being a continuity Tory party. This is why reform are soaring in the polls and Labour are floundering, appeasing fascists NEVER works.
Could you explain the full blown disaster?

In a bonfire of regulations, Reeves will back the loosening of rules on bankers’ bonuses, allowing financiers access to them after five years, three years earlier than currently in an attempt to keep senior staff from moving abroad.

Everyone seems to forget that the political landscape can change quickly, and its another 4-5 years until the next election. Labour are probably happy to make the unpopular decisions now, in the belief that there is plenty of time for them to make amends - and if those unpopular decisions have positive results in the longer term, all the better.

The country is a mess. Im not going to pretend Labour have particularly impressed me so far, but equally they dont really need to. They need to arrest the decay and get some positive change in motion for the next several years. They will be judged at the next election, not a few months into their tenure. Anyone expecting miracles and rainbows after 3 months is living in a dreamworld.

How did the Tories appease fascists?
Supporting a fascist regime and demonizing foreigners for a start.

The 25% decrease in the polls? Reform being the most popular party? Supporting a genocide? Selling off the NHS? Deregulating finance (again, because it worked so well the last time)? They've been trash and will probably get worse.

Fair enough, I appreciate the reply. Would you say that the first 3 months have inspired you with confidence for the rest of their reign? It hasn't for me. I actually think things are going to get worse, probably much worse.

Cheers.
Genuinely sickening. Landlords should not receive one penny.
The crazy thing is it’s less about the lack of building social housing and more about who currently owns the houses that are already here.

Britain might be unique in that around 90% of landlords are individuals citizens. Just grandparents or parents(They typically rent out one property). Would recommend the book -
Against Landlords: How to Solve the Housing Crisis by Nick Bano.

Now she's after drivers.

Careful buying a new car in the uk, anything over 40k is subject to cars an additional rate of £410 per year on top of the standard rate, for five years. The five-year time limit starts from the second year the car is first registered.

Cars first registered after April 2017 are still liable for the first-year ‘showroom tax’, with the first year rate based on the vehicle’s CO2 emissions. From year two, the standard rate is applied and drivers are required to pay £190 per year. Only zero emission vehicles qualify for free VED while new cars with a list price of more than £40,000 pay an additional £410 for the first five years the standard rate is applied.

The road tax system will change again in a 2025 when electric cars will be charged VED for the first time. New electric cars will be subject to the standard rate of VED and the £40,000 premium car tax fee, EVs will also be subject to the first-year showroom tax (which applies to vehicles with CO2 emissions 1 to 50g/km) currently £10 a year

below is the table for the first year, showroom tax.

PS, 40k tax on cars has been in since 2017 i think...

CO2 emissions (g/km)First year rateStandard rate*
£0£0
1 - 50£10£190
51 - 75£30£190
76 - 90£135£190

101 - 110£195£190
111 - 130£220£190
131 - 150£270£190
151 - 170£680£190
171 - 190£1095£190
191 - 225£1650£190
226 - 255£2340£190
Over 255£2745£190

Anyone else noticed Sky have been pretty anti Labour a lot recently, I mean it’s one thing to pick holes in actual policy and ask relevant questions but last week you had Trevor Phillips asking why don’t they appoint Farage and then they come out with stuff like below. Rigby has been coming up with the same type of stuff.

Most “Hindus” I know are meat eaters and heavy drinkers.

(I’m of Indian origin)
Absolutely in my experience. But not when their wives are watching, at religious times anyway. Outside religious times half the wives aren't averse to a booze-up either.

I think no 10 should have recognised a formal occasion is slightly different of course.

Every Hindu I know drinks loads. It’s just daft to release an apology for it. I doubt anybody was offended and if they were they could just not drink the booze.

It’s such a minor mishap and shouldn’t even be mentioned but here we are. A constant tap tap tap all day every day.

On auspicious days they are curtailed. Alcohol probably ok but meat eaters are often veg for Diwali day.

Maybe they needed a drink after hearing first hand about what the Hindu lads thought about Muslims and the Labour government.

I’m not chronically online unlike you so that means very little to me. Just another pointless tidbit from number 10

It being pointless can't be what you meant, because nr 10/London/England/UK/whatever being on the way to morphing into Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, has no connotations to pointlessness at all. That wouldn't make any sense.

What were you trying to say, then?

That nobody should be apologising for having booze in the vicinity in a city where booze isn’t forbidden due to religious reasons. Riyadh was the biggest booze forbidden city I’ve spent time in and that’s what came to mind first, you boring nitpicker.

Wow, that's an even dumber line of reasoning than I could imagine, I was trying to remember why I had you on ignore.

I'll remember next time, don't worry, we won't have to repeat this.

True, but usually not during festivals*. At least for observant ones.

*with strong regional variations
That's exactly why they should've played it safe.

I can see how someone attending the event could've been annoyed at the sheer lack of basic research into one of India's biggest festivals.

Also, I think it depends on what "served" means, which is not clear from the article. A buffet with separate sections for veg/non-veg food and drinks available at the side of the room is different from servers walking up to you and sticking a plate full of meat dishes or wine glasses in your face.

In any case, I don't think it's a big deal to anyone who wasn't at the event. In fact, the first I'm hearing that this happened is through this supposed apology.
