I had a look at the possession statistics from the games you listed, these are all according to the BBC match reports

Liverpool - 47%
Arsenal - 44%
WBA - 38%
Bolton - 59%
Sunderland - 50%
Fulham - 58%
Birmingham - 45%
Blackpool - 52%
Stoke - 53%
Blackburn - 60%
Newcastle - 52%
Aston Villa - 49%

Averages out at 50.6% possession. Given that on average we have slightly more possession than these teams, and we had better forwards, wingers and defenders than any of them, I'd say a lack of creativity was a far bigger reason than inability to keep the ball when it comes to our struggle to beat these sides. We kept the ball reasonably well, even in away games, we just couldn't do much with it.

Stats are interesting but are not really proof of anything. What these stats do indicate though is that for a team of our standing we have not really dominated lower teams as you would expect us to.

Like is said i do agree we lacked a killer pass at times last year, but for me having only one immobile, not very combative defensive midfielder was the source of many of our problems.

For instance look at our home form compared to our away form. We certainly didn't lack creativity at home, yet the same players were unable to perform to a similar standard away. Why?

I believe the midfields were more fiercely contested away from home and therefore we did not enjoy the same type of dominance as at OT. This is why i believe a signing like Banega would be more beneficial than Sniejder.

We're getting off topic a bit (if this thread ever was on topic... perhaps page 1!?!) but I've only a couple points to make:

1, The quality of a squad is only surely relative to the quality of every other squad at a given point in time? So, even if our squad isn't as good as it was in times gone by, it's still "at least 3rd" best in Europe. I wholeheatedly agree we can be stronger so, in fact, we're kind of arguing the same point!

2, You dismiss the factual evidence that points to us being better than Madrid (even if it due to a lucky draw in the CL, other Premiership teams being 'shit', etc...) but don't actually give any reason why Real Madrid have a right to consider themselves better than us. Are you basing the assessment on their team, on paper? Like it or not, there's a good argument to suggest City are stronger than us on paper too.

I'd love to face Madrid this season though. I think our discipline would see us through.
1. Fair enough

2. There is no factual evidence, the fact we reached the Champions League Final and they didn't, that's no indication, we both lost as soon as we faced Barca. My assessment is based not only on the strength of the team on paper, but also our relative results against other teams. Of the three teams both we and Real Madrid faced last season, Barcelona, Valencia and Tottenham, their average results against all of them were better than ours. Of course it's not conclusive evidence, but it is the only evidence we have to go on, other than 'on paper'.

Let's just hope that the inconsistant Anderson and the unproven Cleverly are enough to carry us through this season.
Carrick is poor IMO giggs is ever ageing and fletch is still struggling with the virus, so let's hope they can step up.

Apparently feguson has said we won't be signing anyone else this transfer window.

I'm not gonnae get inntae that...we're not in for him, there's na doubt abou that.

Apparently feguson has said we won't be signing anyone else this transfer window.

This doesn't surprise me at all. It does however disappoint me immensely.

Let's hope that young Tom can step it up considerably.

He's also said that Pogba has been promoted from the reserves now as well and that he'll get his chance so I think the Sneijder story is over.

Sneijder could be like Benzema, if we signed him we probably wouldn't have signed Hernandez. Be happy guys, we have the best manager in the history of football.

Honestly, I wouldnt mind taking the risk and give Pogba already a change, although I am not sure if he's ready. Of course, Sneijder would improve us, but I just love to see young talents coming up and watch their progress

and if this is the end of the Sneijder to United story I think it's a permmenant thing.

Ferguson looks at the long term, not the here and now.

Sneijder isn't the future, Pogba and Cleverely are.

Yes, if it isn't this window, it's never.

I'm starting to rekindle hopes for a loan move for Kaka if Sneijder never materializes. In saying that, it wouldn't surprise me if this went to the wire.

Especially if our midfield is lacking in the next couple of games. Which I don't think it will.

He banned all Sneijder/transfer questions rather than say we're not signing anyone. Which can be taken either way.

No apparently he's said we won't be signing anyone else this transfer window.

Why Kaka?!

Why Kaka?!

I think we need some genuine quality in the central area and I'm not sure it's wise to rest on Cleverley and Giggs for a full a season. I think Sir Alex could get him back to a decent level, even half of Kaka's best would be something sensational. He's still not that old and due to the time out he's had, could probably have 2-3 years of top flight football in him at a very good level with the support of Sir Alex.

You're just muppeting now.

How do we know that Kaka wants to move to England? How do we know that Ferguson is interested? How do we know that Real Madrid would let him go?

He has insinuated in the past that he "dreams of United" - it's common knowledge.

Er, I didn't say it was going to happen...? I've come to the conclusion lots of people on this forum don't actually read what's said and just make up what they want to have heard.

For what it's worth, we were linked with this in January, I believe. Nothing came of it, nor did I suggest it would.

I'm actually going to delete this thread now, its a fecking mess, all over the place and looks like its not going to happen anyway.

I'll put a new one up for updates only.
