You can argue it either way, and find a lot of examples. It depends on the player. I don't remember Giggs playing a lot in his early years, and neither did Beckham. But then, neither of them played in the central midfield. Those type of players need more time to develop. In fact I could counter your argument with the best midfielders in the world, Xavi and Iniesta. They were in and around the team, learning from those who were already there, patiently. Xavi, especially learned a lot from his current manager, and bid his time. He is 31 now, but he hasn't been a regular starter until the last 5 or so seasons.

You have to have the ball to create, and too many times last season Carrick and Fletcher were found wanting. There is an initial battle for supremacy that must be won before the right to play football is earned, and we did not earn that right often enough. That is why so many teams gave us such a hard time last year, not through lack of creativity, through lack of control in the middle.

Liverpool, Arsenal, West Brom, Bolton, Sunderland, Fulham, Birmingham, Blackpool, Stoke, Blackburn, Newcastle and most especially Villa all completely dominated our midfield for uncomfortably long periods last year.

If you think that was down to lack of creativity then that is your choice, but i attribute it to a lack of a dominant figure, and an inability to keep the ball under pressure. Sneijder may address the keeping the ball problem, but the fact he usually plays in front of specialised DM's like De Jong do not suggest he will add much defensively. That is my concern.

I had a look at the possession statistics from the games you listed, these are all according to the BBC match reports

Liverpool - 47%
Arsenal - 44%
WBA - 38%
Bolton - 59%
Sunderland - 50%
Fulham - 58%
Birmingham - 45%
Blackpool - 52%
Stoke - 53%
Blackburn - 60%
Newcastle - 52%
Aston Villa - 49%

Averages out at 50.6% possession. Given that on average we have slightly more possession than these teams, and we had better forwards, wingers and defenders than any of them, I'd say a lack of creativity was a far bigger reason than inability to keep the ball when it comes to our struggle to beat these sides. We kept the ball reasonably well, even in away games, we just couldn't do much with it.

Bayern are never gonna sell us another player - we were lucky to get Hargreaves & even that was drawn-out. They're some canny feckers tho - they got top-dollar but they used the oldest trick in the book - Industrial Sabotage!

I hope you're not basin your "not needing Sneijder" comment on the strenghth of the pre-season or the community shield? Because thats wee-buns compared to the real competitive games. Also, the team with the best squad over the course of a long season will win trophies & we're needing a injection of creativity in mid-field - Sneijder fits that bill perfectly - Toms progressing nicely which is vital aswell!

In todays market & the kind of money top-class players bring to a club through success & global appeal, i think £30-35m isnt shit loads for Sneijder. He's just turned 27 on the 9th June, so we could get 6,7 or more years out of him - his transfer fee would be paid back very quickly!

The problem with Nasri is that he's probably goin to City because they're offering anything upto 200k per week, whereas we wont touch that.
Dont know why this surprises me - it shouldnt, but that lad is a lying greedy cnut given he only said a month or so ago.. "money doesnt matter if you dont win trophies..". City arent gonna win much playin like they do - the Community Shield showed the world why we are where we are in world football - they are never gonna get anywhere near that. I thought we were excellent... that second goal - i think i've watched that 100 times now, just keep rewinding it from when Nani collects the ball in our half :drool:

How much do you think Schweni is going to cost? £15m? Gotze is more of a winger than a central attacking mid. He plays on the wings for both Dortmund and Germany. And when was the last time a German played for Man Utd?

Heinze has a Russian-German mother.

Götze showed last night that he can play behind the striker and as an attacking midfield. I found an interesting map in the German kicker today where they highlighted Götze's actions on the field. He does do more defensive work than I realised. And, he's Dortmund's fittest player, stays behind after training to do weights.

Aye, if you look at the average possession for the top four last season from the PL and the top two from La Liga we come off looking reasonably well:

Barcelona: 72%
Arsenal: 60%
Chelsea: 58%
Manchester United: 56%
Real Madrid: 56%
Manchester City: 53%

While, of the same list of teams, we're the lowest of all for pass success:

Barcelona: 90%
Arsenal: 84%
Chelsea: 84%
Real Madrid: 83%
Manchester City: 82%
Manchester United: 81%

And obviously, as we all know, Barcelona are insanely good.

Before Chicha, when was the last time a Mexican played for United? What about a Portuguese player before Ronaldo? (maybe there was but, for life of me can't recall one). What about S. Korean before Park?

When it comes to individual talents, does it matter if someone from their country played for United X number of years ago? No.
