Considering the fact that he's already sponsored by Nike and is at Inter who're also sponsored by Nike, I don't see why on earth they'd want to pay for him to move to another Nike sponsored team.

We have a much bigger fanbase and global appeal than Inter.

We do but it won't stop people coming up with theories like that you've quoted though.

It's not exactly a theory and if what he said is true, then fair enough but you seem to lump me in with people who make up 'theories'?

Uh?

Because United is far bigger and far more popular than Inter?

I'm sure Adidas would love a player of theirs to move from a Chelsea to a Real Madrid.

Well, the only thing you can see different out of those scenario's is the teams, Inter and United.

There's your answer.

Gasperini's latest on the Sneijder saga.

Is the Nike rumor that we're looking to Nike to improve his contract with them to make sure we don't have to pay higher wages? Smart thinking if true.

tends to happen with the bigger transfers, Ronnie - Beckham. The Kit makers are bound to make a shit load through shirt sales etc so why not take a lil it for the team for the greater good of their products/promotion of such.

Because few people outside Italy support Inter (and even in Italy they are like third or fourth) while United are a worldwide brand and one of the three most recognized football clubs on planet, possibly among top 5 most recognized sports brands anywhere.

Yep, it's really only people with Italian backgrounds who support Inter, at least in my experience.

Why would Sneijder's wife be keen on a move to Manchester?

Vidic needs a similar wife, if true.

I dont get this shirt sales thingy. If Sneijder comes he'll sell loads of shirts, but that shirt sale will most likely be at the expense of one of our other players, so i dont see how him comin will generate anymore income - unless parents / fans are buyin more than one United shirt with different players names on them?!

It's not only about shirt sales. Plenty of young people might see him as a role model, and these people at the same time may know the brand of Manchester United, hence Nike as a brand will profit from that not only through direct shirt sales. In individual sports you got people like Federer, Nadal or previously Woods who are very marketable but don't sell shirts with names on their back or replicas, they simply draw people's attentio to certain brand.

Guys you are aware this whole Nike rumour pretty much started due to site glitch yeah? Altidore could be edited to look the same way.

It makes alot of sense though and I wouldn't be surprised if it happened with a few other transfers.

Scenario:

Sneijder signs for us with the a bit of financial help from Nike, he sells a shed load of shirts, Nike have a handsome boost to their profits.

Alternate Scenario:

Nike don't offer any financial help, we don't sign Sneijder, he doesn't sell a shed load of shirts, Nike don't make a handsome profit on top of what they usually make.

Which do you think Nike would prefer?

We're discussing a different rumour (not the glitch which portayed Sneijder as a Nike-boot-wearing Manchester United player: 'One of the most deadly accurate players in the world, Wesley Sneijder plays for Manchester United and wears the Nike T90 Laser III' etc). The relevant rumour is that Nike have stepped in to aid Wes's move to United. :)

This whole Nike thing seems to be a massive example of clutching at straws. We're talking about Wesley Sneijder here, not fat Ronaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo or Ronaldinho. 3 players who wear Nike, yet all played for Adidas wearing teams.

Nike only sponsor the player and I doubt they have any say whatsoever in which team they play for.

To be fair it could be one of the little dark secrets of football, one of those thing few know about and no ones talks about.

But you're right. Over the years i've seen much more talk than any sort of evidence to clothing and footwear companies being involved in deciding where a footballer will play.

Those rumours only started happening after that site glitch was posted as news on some sites.

But interesting that Beckham has always played for Adidas sponsored teams since us

Well it's only two teams. England were sponsered by Umbro, Real have had Adidas for ages and the MLS is only legally allowed to wear Adidas kits.

Oh...forgot about Milan. Bad form :(

Fergie will have a press conference when United land in Chicago tonight. Lets see how he denies the Sneijder story this time :D

de Gea said they're travelling to Chicago an hour ago. The flight will take about 4 and a half hours according to Google. Give them time to land, get ready, etc.. I'd say the press conference will be about 10:30pm.

Don't know if it's bollocks, but have anyone seen this yet?

'latest sneijder 'rumours': deal could be done soon, with sneijder having met his wife n family just yesterday, since to move to england, his missus must say okay also.. apparently she is quite keen on e idea.. also, some tweets between sneijder's mum and another soccer mum, mrs. gorre, dutch mother of a man utd academy player kenji gorre (can check it out, player really exists) were mentioning news of a move to old trafford and stuff.. lets hope then'

And how many shitloads of shirts do you think we have to sell simply because of Sneijder to compensate for .. say £10 million ? I have never got the impression that football fans in England buy tons of shirts because of new players. Most of them would probably buy the shirt regardless - but perhaps choose Sneijders name rather than Giggs or Chicharito

The Nike thing is complete bollocks in my opinion, why'd they let Ronaldo go to Madrid?

Of course it would benefit Nike having one of Europe's top player's at their biggest seller, United, but the idea they'd fund any part of the deal is surely a load of shite.

Exactly. It's bollocks spread from a site glitch a few days ago.

Yeah, such a load of shite that they've apparantly done it before.

It might have spread from a website glitch or it mightn't have, but why is the idea that a company, with a profit motive, would help invest in an asset that would increase their own profits so inconceivable?
