Weird things about football that are true but don't sound it

I rate him, always have :D Come at me! He never faffs about with contracts, he takes a pay drop to stay at the club, and always seems to do decently when I see you play.

(Although I do understand why United fans would want him as a squad player rather than a first team XI player).
Sums him up tbh. He’s solid and has served the club well with minimal fuss. We could do better of course - I’d like to see Dalot as first choice moving on - but he’s great as a squad option. In terms of areas we need to address, right back is well down the list - but some here make out like he’s the second coming of Titus Bramble!

Following Martials goal today v Watford, this is the first season since 1995/96 that United have had 4 players score 10+ goals.

I thought more than 6 teams would have achieved it.

Ashley Young is older than Antonio Valencia :wenger: Took me by surprise when I heard it the other day, given that one can't do much anymore, and the other is a rather competent all-rounder.

On a similar note, Jesse Lingard being older than Lukaku is another strange but true United age-related factoid.

Dunno about weird but Ive just learnt that to score four goals is called a haul and five is a glut, six is a double hatrick (of course) but seven is a haultrick! All these years watching footy and I never knew that.

According to who? I've never heard most of those terms ever used in more than 30 years of playing and watching football.

Two goals is a brace, three a hat-trick and that's it!

"Congrats on your glut" sounds so wrong.

I read it in a magazine at work and I thought just like you ‘that can’t be right?’ I’ve watched football for years and never heard this. But yeah, ‘congratulations on your glut’ doesn’t sound right

Liverpool have had the most winners in the PL after 90 minutes. 33. Arsenal are next on 25 and United and Spurs both have 22. Wouldn't think it with all the talk of Fergie time and I'm sure a lot would have thought Utd would top that list, never mind be so far behind.

Not sure if someone already mentioned this, but Neymar is older than Phil Jones!

It really messed my mind this!

United played an all-English backline against Watford yesterday

No English manager has ever won the Premier League

Factoid means things that are generally mistaken to be facts but are actually untrue.

Rooney signing for United is closer in time to the signing of Cantona than the signing of Fred.

Shane Long is a striker!

Read in the paper today that Wolves apparently didn't commit a single foul against Brighton on saturday. Pretty incredible.

Zidane only won 4 major club honours (2 scudettos, 1 La Liga and 1 CL) in a 17 season career. His club palmarès is well padded with domestic and European Super Cups, Intercontinental Cups and Intertotos.

Up until the City match United had never lost a Premier League home game by a 2-0 scoreline.

Wow. Have a hard time believing that but then Madrid really didn’t win much back then did they.

Either way, Zizou was brilliant.

I’ve never heard of those terms either in any official way although have heard of, say, 5 goals in 3 games over a short period being described as a ‘haul’.

To be fair though not too many score 5, 6 in a game is virtually unheard of and as for 7 I don’t think I’ve ever come across that in a professional football match !

Pretty sure the Football Ramble either endorsed or came up with those names.

Steven Gerrard and Laurent Blanc have exactly the same number of club-goals in their careers.

That’s amazing. Blanc is actually Montpellier’s top goalscorer ever too,

Not exactly true though. Laurent Blanc has 137 goals in 708 games, Steven Gerrard has 191 goals in 748 games. Club stats only.

They have the same amount of LEAGUE goals, 125. Which is still pretty interesting, I'll admit.

That's an astonishing number of goals for a defender. Did he play midfield early in his career or something?

Michael Owen won the Ballon d'Or beating Raul and Oliver Khan.

That was weird at the time as well!

Before him the only English players to win it were Kevin Keegan, Bobby Charlton and Stanley Matthews

United have spent 806million and at best competes for 6th place

that can't be true

edit - looks like it is, that's bloody amazing

The Hawthorns is the highest ( above sea level ) football ground in the UK.

Port Vale's Vale Park is second and Oldham's Boundary Park the third highest.

Ashley Young has played 241 times for United but only has 18 goals to his name. I know he plays RB now; but he has played a lot at RW/LW and that seems surprisingly low.

Mourinho has better PPG ratio with us than Klopp has with Liverpool.

Klopp - 204 matches: 115 W - 52D - 37L = 1,95 PPG
Mourinho - 114 matches: 84W - 31D - 29L = 1,97 PPG
