Ian Wright was undoubtedly a better player (albeit much different) but I'd say England were stronger then and he had more competition for places (First Lineker, then Shearer, Sheringham, and later Owen)

Yes that's how I meant it, based on talent more than anything. There was Ferdiinand, Cole, Fowler and Collymore to contend with at various times for Ian Wright too.
Wright Phillips had less competiton in numbers. There was Beckham who of course was a huge mainstay but he couldn't play every game. SWP had more versatility than his dad playing either wing or as an attacking midfielder/10. He actually started less than Ian and only played a full 90 minutes 4 times.

Also bizarre is the fact that they only won 5 of their final 21 league games...and those wins literally came in five successive games! Which is baffling.

Paisley had the distinct advantage that he was assistant to Shankly and merely refined what was already there. He also only had to beat average European teams like Moenchengladbach and Roma, whilst United had Bayern and all time greats Barca to deal with. No disrespect to him, Paisley was one of the first British managers to make possession count and beat Europeans at their own game. Great manager with the boot room as back up but Fergie had a much harder job, in that he had to unravel a Fat Ron’s drinking club mentality and only then, was he able to start building his own team from scratch. Paisley already had a title winning team that were recently champions. United hadn’t won it for over two decades.
It’s little wonder United and Liverpool are such close rivals, not only with their trophy hauls well in excess of anyone else but in Busby, Shankly, Paisley and Fergie the greatest managers to manage English clubs (with honourable mention to Sir Cloughie) and support to match. Both genuinely self made clubs and little wonder a lot of Reds have scant regard or acknowledgement for the Berts to such a degree that even us Manchester based ones would rather the pointless achievements of Ciddy than Liverpool overhaul us. As a fan who suffered their universally praised glory years, compared to our modern media/journo/fan with licence to seethe, as well as their support being totally patronised whilst ignoring their routinely cowardly knife attacks on lad & dads, I have plenty to resent but still, respect them for a genuine club that they were/are.

Come at me! He never faffs about with contracts, he takes a pay drop to stay at the club, and always seems to do decently when I see you play.(Although I do understand why United fans would want him as a squad player rather than a first team XI player).
