Weghorst or Ronaldo?

Jesus, what a choice. As if things aren’t bleak enough.
The ‘cow’s arse with s banjo’ line lightened my evening a touch, though.

Ronaldo is disruptive to the team. Weghorst is one man down.

I'll take one man down compared to disrupting the entire team.
Is he? He threw tantrums through his agent, went to war with the manager. Didn't remember him starting fights with the players. Maguire is more unpopular than him and he's still here.

Its both obvious and not out of the question given that its a hypothetical based on last year's 24 goals. If you give Ronaldo proper service, he will eventually start knocking in goals, even in his late 30s. The fact that we are even comparing the two players makes me wonder if I'm trapped in a mirror universe.

Before this season, yes. Not anymore. He’s done.

He had service. He wasn't performing. His form from last year isn't the same form as this year.

We had all of the first half of the season (including his time with Portugal) to know this. Why are you in denial?

People now trying to suggest Ronaldo wasn’t disruptive to the team! Some ambitious rewriting of history here.

He wasn't here the first half of the season. He came in late and left before December.

He's done now that he's trapped in a plastic league with no decent service. A sad demise of a co-goat.

He is in that plastic league because he’s done, not the other way around, tbf. I should leave it there though, I know everyone has their own take on Ronaldo and it tends to get nit picky after a fashion!

You don't actually believe that do you ? He was on contract to be here all year this year - ie the biggest and most competitive league in the world, playing for one of the world's biggest clubs. The only reason he's in Saudi is because he lost his shit and melted down to intentionally get released, not because Untied didn't want him.

I believe he was no longer good enough to be here and ETH was fine with him going. The fact that he had a contract for two years doesn’t really tell me anything.

I believe ETH had no choice because the player deliberately did things he knew would get him released. ETH saying "He will stay, heh" wouldn't have stopped the club hierarchy from releasing him given what he said in the interview.

Ronaldo isn't right for United in 2023, neither is WW. That's all there is to it really, but for the sake of the thread I'd go with the useless lump who doesn't go crying to Piers fecking Morgan when things aren't going swell.

How was he disruptive?
He w as disruptive by starting needless drama allowing the press to start hammering any player that puts him on the bench, the manager that puts him on the bench, the long term plan we had with our manager, etc... All this through him leaving the bench early, and talking to Piers (this happened before he left United btw). You can't argue he wasn't disruptive because United terminated his contract right after. United could easily have not, and do you think his actions would not have been disruptive in that time period?

Exactly. He was crap with Portugal as well. I can't even imagine how bad he would be under this fixture congestion that we've had to deal with in the 2nd half of the season. His legs wouldn't hold up.

I don’t think we’ll find common ground here since it’s been debated to death. Clearly I think he was, you think he wasn’t.
Of course not, I'm not sure if we're even talking about the same thing. I replied to a post claiming he was disruptive to the team. I'd like to see evidence or even claims that the players were affected by him negatively. Because I remember him celebrating goals with Antony and generally getting along with everyone before the WC.

Is still Weghorst, seeing Ronaldo was equally shit this season but at least Weghorst is not toxic.

I believe ETH would have been quite fine with Ronaldo leaving last summer but didn’t have the political capital to make it happen, especially as nobody seemed to actually want to purchase Ronaldo. I think he was probably quite satisfied with Ronaldo throwing himself out of the bus. To that point, Ronaldo wasn’t in the first choice XI and didn’t feel he was part of Erik’s plans, hence his tantrum, and therefore I think it’s clear ETH had decided Ronaldo wasn’t good enough to be part of his squad by then.

Not to duck out of this thread abruptly, but I just got onto the BART in Richmond as I make my way home from my folks, and finding myself quite sleepy, so I really will leave it there for now :)

Magic Carpets > BART :wenger:

Weghorst. Clearly far less talented, but he doesn't have the ego or arrogance of Ronaldo, and if he could score a few goals, that would help.

I think the problem with Ronaldo is that the whole team has to play around him for it to work. So when he doesn’t score and misses his chances like he did this season, it’s a problem. Him not pressing is an issue as well but not as big as him not scoring I reckon.

By being disrespectful to the manager and going public with piers Morgan and also I do believe there is friction between him and some players e.g. Bruno, he is being disruptive to the team. Does he really get along with everyone before the WC? I highly doubt so.

Just to add...there has been so many reports of him having issues with his team mates even as early as 2021. He is self centred and partly what makes him a winner in his prime. However, that is also an issue when you no longer contribute like before.

Just one of the many reports

Ronaldo had plenty of service in his games this season. He simply had lost too much foot-speed, both in terms of actual running speed and also being able to sort his feet out to take the shot or play the pass that needed to be made. We saw the same for Portugal, and going by the highlights he's even struggling with that in the Saudi league.

If we'd kept him all season he would have scored more than Wout (seeing as Wout has barely scored at all), but he showed absolutely nothing to indicate he'd have scored 15-20 goals. He managed to score once in the league against an Everton side that's probably going to get relegated and twice (one a penalty) against a team from Moldova. It's pretty much guaranteed that Rashford would have scored less as well.

He wasn't here the first half of the season. He came in late and left before December.
He played in our first eight games of the season, stayed on the bench against City, played in the next four games, refused to come off the bench against Spurs, was suspended against Chelsea, played the next four games, then was 'ill' for the last two games before he fecked off. Sure he didn't have a preseason (entirely his own fault), but he was here from the start of the competitive matches and was utterly dreadful for all of them.

I believe ETH had no choice because the player deliberately did things he knew would get him released. ETH saying "He will stay, heh" wouldn't have stopped the club hierarchy from releasing him given what he said in the interview.
All the rumours were that ETH was happy for him to leave before the season started but Ronaldo's agent couldn't find a single decent club in Europe that wanted him (despite quite publicly flying all over the place talking to them all). Whether the club would have sanctioned that sale is another thing, but considering the bad publicity he was already causing I expect they would have. Obviously ETH would be publicly supportive of him (which continued until he left and we've seen the same with Maguire), but that really doesn't mean much. With Ronaldo in the team ETH gave him enough rope to hang himself and that's exactly what Ronaldo did.

We released Ronaldo because of his toxic behaviour, but his toxic behaviour was somewhat related to him not playing as much as he wanted. And he wasn't playing as much because of his terrible form. And then once he was released, he ended up in Saudi Arabia because nobody else wanted him (something that he found so difficult to handle that he fired the agent that had looked after him for decades) because of his terrible form combined with his toxicity and wage demands. So yes he is there because he is done, and from all accounts the team he went to has been worse since his arrival.

I personally would've been happy with Ronaldo seeing out his final year at United as a squad player. But his ego couldn't accept this..

He behaved like a child and for a little while because of him the club was a toxic circus. He had to go.

I still can't believe there were loads advocating Ronaldo to be captain last year . selfish player.

He played 16 games for us this season and scored 3 goals @ a goal every 350 minutes. Had 42 shots with a conversion rate of 7% and a shot Accuracy of 31%.
Fred has 6 goals @ a goal every 348 minutes a conversion rate of 19% and a Shot Accuracy of 39%
Sabitzer has 3 goals @ a goal every 348 minutes a conversion rate of 18% and a Shot Accuracy of 59%

Are we sure about that?
If there's one thing this guy has, its arrogance and cockiness :D

Is he? He threw tantrums through his agent, went to war with the manager. Didn't remember him starting fights with the players. Maguire is more unpopular than him and he's still here.
He went on national TV and put all his dirty laundry out there for piers fecking Morgan to laugh at

I don’t think calling him a problem is a stretch too far

Yes he is, you don't have to literally start fights to be disruptive to the team atmosphere.

Yeah but surely you don't believe that would've continued all year ? Look at Rashford early season vs after the WC. Form does go and return for most players. This is of course unrelated to the silliness that transpired in the lead up to and during the Morgan interview. At that point, most understand he had to go.

Dude, he’s 38 years old. His stats were more likely to get worse than better.

I wasn’t suggesting they would improve at 38. Just that he has A lot more goals in him than WW, which counts for a lot on a team that isn’t scoring and is obviously lacking in ideas in the final third despite having very accomplished players on the pitch.

It’s debatable how many goals you would have got out of him this season

When we were playing him up front I thought Wout was better. Now he's playing ten/attacking mid I'm not sure we're getting information we can use to compare him to Ronaldo.
