We desperately need a right back

Depends on what context that "decent" is......in terms of sunday league, very impressive defence tbf, the 3-0 last week WAS the national pubs cup final and a clean sheet was kept.

So, who should we buy?

People talk about Clyne, but I'm not fully convinced yet. And besides, Southampton are in still a battle for a Champions League spot.

If you ask me, I would start leading Dortmund's fire sale by raiding in for Lukasz Piszczek. Considering Dortmund are now second-to-last with half of the Bundesliga season gone, the moment is well taken to start taking advantage of the anger in the Dortmund dressing room to poach a few players there.

Hearing SkyBet have suspended betting on us signing Coleman? Anything in that?

Nope. They never had a market for it, and even if they did, and even if they had suspended betting, it would mean absolutely nothing (see numerous previous examples).

Off topic but how is Gundogan these days? I see afew links with him.

He's gradually getting back to himself, I didn't really expect him to if I'm honest but he's proven me wrong. He's had a couple of match winning assists/goals in December.

However I still think it would be unwise for us to throw a bid at him in January; especially whilst he's still regaining a bit of consistency in Germany, he needs this for his development, this is crucial for his progression. Signing him now is just asking for trouble as he'll need to adapt, learn the language and regain fitness at Carrington and muscle up for the English game in a short space of time and the problem is he can't be overworked so much on the back of an injury. A summer deal would be more prudent, same applies for Strootman in my eyes, if we are going for him.

However if we do get him now, the perks would be a cut-price in comparison to Summer.

It's pretty critical now. Valencia and Rafael are out.

Let's say Coleman and Clyne aren't available to buy for whatever reason, who else should or could we be looking at? I can think of Danilo of Porto and I'm not sure, if he's good enough, other than that who else? Dani Alves?

The first 3 you mentioned, plus Mario Fernandes, would be sensible targets.

Alves and perhaps Srna could be gettable, but they're the wrong side of 30.

I think Rafael, Valencia, Jones is enough cover at RB. Why spunk £30m on Coleman when it's clear we should be breaking the bank for an attacker who's going to balance our attack and a centre half.

This season has proven otherwise.

To be fair, Valencia isn't a crock as has been fit most of the season. We are either a) unlucky as feck or b) have a systematic problem with injuries. In either case, it's not guaranteed that any player we sign will actually stay fit.

Why? Probably because none of the 3 players above are world class and have a shocking injury record. Valencia has the least injuries but is a winger, we need a quality RB who will stay consistently fit.

Of those only Rafael is a right back and it shows - Jones and Valencia are willing but limited. Rafael I really like, but its an increasingly long time since his form and fitness were both at the required level.

RB is probably the least of our problems right now, it's probably 3 signings down the pecking order for me, and "stay consistently fit" - we have an endemic injury issue at the club, there's no guarantee that a new signing won't come in and succumb to the same type of problems, especially looking how all players we've just signed this summer have been hit by injuries.

I agree that the way our players are getting injured is ridiculous but with that being said, we can't just not buy a RB ever in case they fall victim to that.
FWIW I think we need to strengthen in other areas to, but RB has become a major issue for us.

We're likely the only club in the world without a healthy recognized senior right back on the roster now. I can't believe there are still people posting that its the least of our problems.

It's amazing that people are still thinking Rafael can stay fit for most of the season, Valencia is a good back-up and Jones/Smalling can play right-back too

Rafael: That he will stay fit.....that will never happen....some bodies aren't made for football

Valencia: He's okay in that position.....but "okay" isn't good enough for a top club

Jones/Smalling: At least Van Gaal has realised that both aren't right-backs

We need to buy a world class right back. If Rafael is as good as we think he is and miraculously gets fit and stays fit the competition will be healthy. If he can't get in the team ahead of the new right back tough fecking tits.

Everton would want a ridiculous fee for Coleman probably.

I'd rather go for Mattia De Sciglio.

Already international and would be far cheaper than Coleman or Clyne and he's still very young

Coleman has had his own injury problems this season anyway, hasn't he?

Missed three full PL games this season as well as one where he had a six minute cameo. By our standards that makes him indestructible.

I'd be more worried about his rather average form tbh.

This, hes not worth 25m by this seasons performances.

That's not nearly as bad as I thought it was actually. Was sure he missed more.

Can't really comment on his form as I haven't seen much of Everton, although he was poor for Ireland in the qualifiers.

To be fair to him it's not like the rest of his team are flying either. Hard to maintain excellent form when the rest of your team is in a mini meltdown, we saw that ourselves last year.

Still, it would definitely be a concern if we were spending 25m on him.

Puts me off more than anything. Everton desperately need a big cash injection, and they'd love to see United coming to provide it. They'll hide their delight well though.

On the contrary selling their valuable players while being in a bit of a mire would go to no end in antagonizing the fans as it appears kind of a delicate situation down there with Martinez pleading for time in the media. I doubt they'd sell till summer. I expected Van Gaal to pull some value signings from Germany or Holland for the full back/defensive slots. Luke Shaw is brilliant and worth spending on, I cannot say the same for Coleman.

Yep, though the international team doesn't really play in a way that allows him to attack as much as he does for Everton anyway. Without that part of his game he's always going to be a far more ordinary player. Think his poor lacklustre Everton form would be a bigger concern from a United point of view....

Coleman showed what he can do last season, which is attack with far more potency (a genuine goalthreat from wide) than the likes of Clyne which is extremely important if we are going to play wingbacks. He has been more ordinary this season which is why his fee should have gone down and make it a more managable transfer
