Wayne Rooney rejoins Everton | United save £30M by giving him £10M pay-off

Brutal from Paddy Power

Who would have thought ten years ago that this lad would have been transferring for a free at age 31.

Great player in his pomp but that we've essentially given him away at the age of 31 shows you how far his stock has plummeted - will be interesting to see whether we are subsidising his wages as it seems unlikely that he would take a big pay cut.

There's obviously been some issues like the transfer request and some lifestyle choices but he's played for us for 13 years, was a top player for most of them, won loads of trophies and leaves as our record goal scorer...not too shabby and deserves a good welcome back. I wish him well at Everton (obviously not against us) and hope he can rediscover some resemblance of form, rather than as some ceremonial transfer to sell merch.

Just hope nobody tries claiming that this was a bad decision if Rooney finds form at Everton.

The fact is Rooney was done at United and if he can find good form at Everton then good for him.

Either way, the right decision for all sides and good luck to a club legend.

If Rooney finds ridiculous form, say 2007-2012 level form, then it will be a bad decision but we're 99% sure that wont happen. I do think he can play at around 60-70 percent of that level which will be good for Everton.

So what was the deal in the end? A free transfer but Everton pay his full wage?

Been looking at an Everton forum and they're in for a bloody shock.

"Mourinho didn't give him a chance" is a particularly amusing line. On the whole, there's this widespread genuine acceptance that he's still a fantastic footballer: "the best touch in the squad". I know it must be nice to have him back, but that feeling won't last long.

Poor sods.

They'll learn.

they've spent the last 13 years booing him and now they're welcoming him back with open arms

It needs to be understood how much of a global attraction it is for fans to see legends and former players of their clubs back in their colours. But it seems like you do not consider him a legend, so I understand your perspective, but respectfully disagree.

He's definitely a legend, he's record goalscorer just in a different sense than Scholes etc. I don't think you have to always be world class during your time to be legend.

Its wierd mainly as he's an Everton fan, a scouser, not the most charismatic. Although im not quite sure what club ambassadors do apart from those awful MUTV features tbf.

Meanwhile it's extremely mature to freak out over differing viewpoints/opinions. There's only one truth and you have it, am I right

In this case, I'm fairly confident that if you asked football fans if their record goalscorer was a club legend, the vast majority would say yes. With the remainder being bitter, nonsensical lunatics.

Alot of unfair abuse for Rooney here. Sure he's not the player he was... but he leaves you guys as both a United and Premier League legend. Scored possibly the best goal of the prem era to kill our title hopes when you guys got no.20.

Hard guy not to have a little admiration for poor and all as his last couple of years have been. Maybe Everton will re-ignite something in him but I can see him being not alot more than a rotation option there.

So what's the general consensus amongst Everton fans? It just seems a strange move to me, motivated purely by sentiment. In my opinion he's finished at the top level and it's a bit of a step back from Everton. Don't understand it from a footballing perspective personally.

Got to say I'm loving the feel around this transfer. Sometimes when players come to United, we get the whole 'United fan all my life' spiel and it can be hard to really buy it. But obviously Rooney's never made a secret of the fact he's a die-hard Everton fan, and nor has it ever been a problem for United fans - the mutual hatred of Liverpool helps there. So it's nice to see how much he's relishing the prospect of playing for them again and knowing it's not in any way being put on for the media, because we saw it all even when he wasn't playing for them.

Obviously it helps that he's a United legend, that I'm one of those (apparently quite rare?) fans who didn't 'fall out' with him over the whole 'transfer request' debacle, that his departure is very much due so it's something of a relief to have done it relatively painlessly, and that I quietly expect him to surprise everyone and have an Indian summer for a season or two at Everton. So to me it feels like an everyone wins situation.

Agreed. Most strikers would have another 2/3 years of good stock where they could be an asset. The fact we'e willing to let him walk to get more game times sadly proves he's declined massively. Here's hoping for his own sake that the change of team revitalises him, but I doubt it. He'll probably score against us

Gotta salute Wayne Rooney for everything he's done for us. There's so many moments of brilliance and passion he's shown over the years. It was a privilege to see the Boy Wonder at Everton, become a Man Utd Legend. Don't care what anyone else says. He's got my respect.

Thanks for everything!

Just watched a vid of his 250 odd goals which was 33 mins long!
Ridiculous amount of goals, I wonder how long Messi's would be?

I've recently watched a lot of Manchester United games from 2006-2009, and what a player Rooney was! So sad that he was not able to keep performing at that level. Wish him the best as long he doesn't score against us.

It still wouldn't be a bad decision because he would never have found that form at United.

The only way you could argue it was a bad decision is if Everton finish above us because of that form, or cost us vital points.

Purely hypothetical though as I think he will do well for Everton, but not that well.

One of may favorite players of all time, though it never felt the same after he asked to leave.

All in all it's clear that he was loved and respected by his teammates, and he gave his all to the club even when he wasn't playing. He's a united legend and i wish him nothing but the best.

Just checked YouTube. Most of the compilations for Messi hitting 500 goals are about 45 minutes long. He's got 518 goals for Barcelona in 615 games. Stupid numbers.

I come here to get differing opinions and I'm offering mine now. Take it as you like it.

This has nothing to do with your treatment of him. Every player feels like he's not past it and who best to show it against than the team that thinks you are now.
Fair enough

He was even better from 04-06 in my opinion the team we had wasn't as great as the 06-09 teams but Rooney was unbelievable sometimes singlehandley getting us 3 pts and some of the goals he scored during 04-06 wow

15% of this site aren't lunatics, clinically speaking. :)

He will definitely make it personal to take points off the club that no longer wanted him. Benteke and Carroll do the same to us.
Good. He was never very good against you. The red mist doesn't help him.

so he's signed a £150k per week 2 year deal, and is reportedly taking a pay cut in doing so. we've waived a fee. so what happened to his United contract, has he essentially agreed to cancel it by signing this new deal with Everton?

I genuinely can't think of another player who's highs were so high, whilst his lows were so utterly rock bottom. It's amazing really

I also believe Rooney will get something like Ronnie when he will return at OT with Everton.

Below the return of Ronaldinho at the Nou Camp following his move for Milan.

Rooney truly deserves to have something like that.

Redcafe would have a meltdown if they ever saw Rooney in a United team photo again

He was never the same after March 2010. Its a shame because this year he was up there with the very best players in the world.

What the hell is this bullshit about his damn Everton pajamas?!?

Sounded like Theresa May and her running through a field contrived 'confession'

To be fair you make it really easy for them with your choices of defenders and keepers.

It's slighty depressing watching old clips of him due to how much faster/sharper he looked. It wasn't just that he had more pace, he'd react quicker and his decision making was instant. He'd turn the defender and get a shot away in one movement at times.

Nowadays, you can actually see him slowly figuring out what to do with the ball while it's at his feet...and that's when you know he's having a good game, because when he's having a bad one he never has control of the ball long enough to start thinking about anything.

Saying that, he could still do well at Everton if he gets consistent games. I mean now instead of having Ross Barkley performinng some kind of poor pisstake of Rooney, they can just actually play Rooney instead.

watching that clip above, among the first few goals you see this even just running away to celebrate. Seems like 20 years ago in comparison

Good luck Wayne, you've been shite for a while now but you've been immense for this club.

Wonder how many matches he will end up playing? I assume he'll play #10, which should suit him.

Interestingly, the reaction to this signing on grandoldteam is mostly positive - however if you look at the thread when the rumour initially started pretty much everyone was against it.

A lot of emotion tied up in this, obviously. Once that wears off, though, he will need to find himself playing at a higher level than he has done the last few years.

"the best touch in the squad"
Sad indictment of the Everton squad.
We've sold his wife too!

Probably got more for her than him.

All jokes aside, he was my favorite player for a while, and a truly amazing player at his peak. Some unfortunate events, like requesting transfers and being a bit shit for a while, but at the end of the day he's still a United legend.

Cracking player for Utd over the years. The stats alone make him a Man Utd legend. The move to Everton is a good one for all parties I think. Wayne gets a fresh start at his boyhood club. Jose moves on a player he felt was not in his plans and Everton get a wise and successful old head to guide the squad that Koeman is building. Interesting to see does Rooney recapture some semblance of form in new pastures.
