Wayne Rooney - Manchester United Legend

Do you consider Rooney to be a United legend?

Gutted. Sad day.

Excited to see the next chapter of Manchester United but my god what a fantastic player he was for our club.

My favourite player growing up. Legend.

He has been a great player for the club but I do think he is finished at the top level so pleased he has moved on and also pleased it is not to the US or China. Will be interesting to see if he can recapture something at Everton.

I wrote to that other guy, scroll up. Cba to write it all again.

You didn't answer the question at all.

You suggested he wanted to leave for footballing reasons, which if anything, is the complete opposite of blackmailing the club.

In the first instance, he never said anything about moving to City. He had apparently submitted a transfer request, but at no stage had he indicated that he wanted to move to City. In fact, I think he came out and said if he were to leave it would have been abroad. That was all media speculation fuelled by City (and Chelsea) declaring their interest. The saga ended with Rooney signing a new contract and being reassured that we were going to invest in some quality in the squad, complete with assurances that he was to be a key part of the team.

He outright denies even handing in a transfer request in 2013. Fergie stated it and Scholes mentioned it, I think, but there never seemed to be any concrete confirmation that he wanted out. There was a lot of worry after Fergie retired, and Chelsea tried to capitalise on the uncertainty by luring one of our key players away. He repeatedly reiterated his desire to stay, and of course, actually stayed.

His wages were not doubled at any point in those sagas, but he did get a bit of a pay increase during the first, I believe. However, you said this wasn't about money, then used a (false) example of a wage increase as evidence for him blackmailing the club.

Isn't Herrera currently over the Atlantic at 40,000 feet? Seems like more social media PR agency/management run nonsense.

All the best to Wayne. Glad we've let him go because he wasn't able to contribute anything to us any more. It's been the most sudden decline I've ever seen in a player since Gary Neville (and in Gazza's defense, he was a lot older and had missed the guts of 2 years with a serious injury).

For me, Wayne's behaviour in 2010 was terrible and I've never truly forgiven him for that.

However, of course he is a legend. He leaves us as the clubs all time leading goal scorer, and has lifted every trophy their is to life and was the club captain for 3 years. It's hard to argue with those stats. He gave us so many great memories when he was on form and in ten years time I'm sure we'll reminicise about the good times rather than the dodgy first touches/passes/weak shots we've witnessed for the last 3 years.

Thanks for everything Wayne, and I hope you can get back to a decent level at Everton.

Pathetic is that people are selling themselves as UTD fans, a club they love and cherish yet they're fully prepared to ignore the fact that Rooney has disrespected the club in two occasions, once can be called a mistake, two times is something else.

Could it be they're actually Rooney and not UTD fans?

As I said IMO he's a UTD great, but not a legend.

Do you consider Roy Keane a legend? He held the club to ransom in 1999/2000 season and openly flirted with both Bayern and Juventus.

We had to completely obliterate our wage structure to keep him.

It doesn't stop me from viewing him as one of the clubs greatest ever captains and like Rooney, a legend.

Rio Ferdinand also openly flirted with Chelsea before signing a huge new contract.

It happens all the time.

In 2010 yes in 2013 no, so wrong.

In 2013 perhaps but definitely not in 2010, do you have quotes to prove he did?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...-would-never-have-joined-Manchester-City.html

He asked to leave i doubt in 2010 at least it ever got to the stage of asking which particular club he did or did not want to go.

Wrong again unfortunately mate.

None of what you've said here constitutes blackmail mate, except maybe the part about his wages being doubled. But you said you were not implying that Rooney blackmailed the club for money. To blackmail a person or people, the person doing the blackmailing is ultimately looking to receive something.

So what did Rooney blackmail the club for again?

I really can't be bothered to go and look through ton of web pages in order to find his exact quote.

Both times it was due to him feeling the club won't be as competitive and won't be up there at the top battling for silverware.

Sure I may have been exaggerating when I said he got his wages doubled, maybe better choice of words was "got a significant raise". There how that sounds?

Only he himself can know the real reasons why he wanted to leave.

Rooney has never said anything bad about the club, im surprised some people are still holding that against him.

Love or hate him, be deseves a good send off and the respect for all he has done for manchester united. Just remember DDG & Ronaldo basically begged to leave us and we all still idolise them. He stayed, just like Ronaldo, won us trophies, broke club records and not to mention the help and advice he gave to players like Rashford, Martial and all the other young players to play for such a big club at a young age.

My only gripe was him being paid so much and offering so little in the last 2-3 years, but thats Moyes fault if anything!

Thank you and best of luck at your boyhood club.

The hate some here are holding for the man is amazing really, let you think as if he's a player for another club not our top goal scorer.

Rooney is a legend here no doubt anyone trying to downplay this, and these transfer requests who kept getting said over and over till it becomes boring, if SAF thought they deserve to force him out of the club he would have thrown him out since the first request. I'll trust SAF judgement more than anyone here, sorry.

When any footballer signs a contract , it would be foolish of them not to ask what plans the club had for the future.

Do you think there is the slightest chance Rooney felt the club were not upholding their part of the bargain & felt ' disrespected ' ?

Anyways it's all speculation. The guy is a legend.

He was playing for Manchester United at that moment, a club that is always in for the trophies, especially in that era when he played under SAF, so I don't follow how was he disrespected by the club?

As I said only he himself knows the reason.

wow. you must have had a miserable time in past 13 years while the rest of us were loving it.

No. He was a great player who outstayed his welcome and sullied his legacy by twice asking to leave and then being shit for 3 years.

I loved that overheard kick against City as much as the next United fan. I remember his debut. Infact I called that he'd score a hat-trick at the time.

Doesn't mean I can't be objective.

It's a strange one really.

It's a sad end to his time at United as really he should still be the main man here, leading the line and banging in the goals. Sadly he's faded away dramatically and just doesn't appear to have the consistency to be at the very top. Whether that's just natural regression or he had simply lost his motivation remains to be seen. In spells Rooney has still displayed excellence and ability so I don't think it's all gone just yet..

It's sad because he should be retiring at the club and still delivering performances worthy of his legend. When you look at Ronaldo and what he's doing and even Zlatan last year that should be Wayne. Still wearing red, still the main man. That's what hurts.

Despite the criticism that his hearts not in it anymore watching him go berserk on the touchline last season when Ibrahimovic won us the League Cup at the death and seeing him celebrating with the Europa League Trophy shows that's not the case. He still loves the club and he still loves winning. It's a hard one to understand.

Let's hope he gets a spark from his move and gives us one last look at his genius. Hard not to be choked it won't be here though, let's be honest.

Thanks Wayne and see you next season. You were amazing.

Class post. Totally agree.

InFlight WiFis are a thing now.

In 2010 Rooney was said to be unhappy with lack of investment, If you look back now in that sense after the effect we faced after fergie, He was not totally wrong about lack of investment.

Actually I answered it pretty clearly, not my fault if you are unable to figure it out.

He said he wanted to leave because he doesn't feel club has the right ambitions (he played for Manchester United, go figure) and that the club won't be as competitive as it was.

In other words, get ton of new Super signings or I'm leaving. How in the hell is that not a blackmail?

So you're saying it was all media hoax?

This day should have happened 2-3 years ago. It's never fun to see a legend like Rooney being reduced to what he has become over the last 2-3 years.

As for the poll... "Legend" is difficult to define, as people have different opinions on what makes a legend. Some people draw the line around Cantona, Best, Charlton, Scholes etc, and thus it's hardly preposterous to exclude Rooney. I would personally consider Rooney a legend, even though he's far from a personal favorite of mine. It's hard to ignore all the goals and passion. He was also world class at one stage, which is a description very few players will earn.

Thanks for all the great moments, Wayne!

What different it is than ronaldo throwing tantrums at madrid in 2013 and now.

That's why you have legends and greats and many people take the word "legend" lightly.

Jesus, I still remember that debut against Fenerbahce like it was yesterday. That was 13 years a go ??

I've wasted my life.

He's a legend, not just for United, but for English football in general. The last few seasons just show how short our memory is.

I still don't believe the bicycle kick goal against city. At that moment in the game, against that opposition. Story book stuff. He may have done some questionable thingsasking formore wages and stuff, but who doesn't.

Its like the Tv Series "Friends" Ending in its Last season , Where the Charecter "Rachael" unable to say Goodbye's to Charecter "Ross" in the storyline, and the sadness around Yet satisfaction that it has ended completing full circle. No words from Rooney Yet.

But the Tv continues.....

Enter Game of thrones With the director "Mourinho" :D

Every player at the club is here for the money and the high probability of success.

I take it you are unaware of the period where the club massively underinvested in its future playing staff ? It's part of the reason a younger stronger team wasn't left for safs successor.
You not being aware of this makes your opinion that , Rooney should have just been happy regardless , more understandable.

But the quote though perfectly sums up typical Herrera would say it which United fans Absolutely Love.

Not a legend in my eyes. A legend doesn't ask to leave and hold the club to ransom twice. There's obviously no doubting he's been a top class player for us overall though.

Look mate i may have been a bit of a dick in my other posts, but it's annoying to see people continue to throw around phrases like blackmail, ransom and threatening to go to other clubs with regards to Rooney contract sagas. When it's fairly clear for anyone who has actually looked into it that it mostly wasn't the case.

I am convinced most of the shit people are holding against Rooney after all these years is largely a combination of tabloid nonsense and/or misremembered things he is supposed to have did or said. And of course other people assuming as fact all that shit being constantly spewed on here.

Rooney's no angel he did some questionable things in 2010 no doubt like the statement publicly questioning the clubs ambitions. But other players like Keane, Ferdinand and Ronaldo also did questionable things in similar circumstances and yet they have largely been forgiven or forgotten.

In my opinion Rooney is a United legend. 13 years or so of service, record goal scorer, over 500 games is enough for me to view Rooney as a United legend.
