Ok, misty-eyed reminiscing moment, apologies in advance if this goes a little rawkish, but I'm feeling slightly emotive looking back at all those years...
I remember when he burst onto the scene in the Euros, his debut hat-trick for us ("
remember the name - Wayne Rooney") the 'Roon-aldo' glory years,
that over head kick against City,
that pass and then
that volley from RvP, the falling out with SAF and him sitting in the stands against Real (he shoulda played), the 'Moyes contract', the 'he shall always play' LvG years...
And now the man on a mission to get back into the same side he captains - in a way, you could say that sounds like a downer, and yet, right now, in the last few months, I've been more impressed with him than in the few years before. He's in better shape, his touch has improved (generally), he looks sharper, he sounds more grounded and determined in interviews. Oh, and he's just equaled Sir Bobby fecking Charlton's record as Manchester United's all time time goal-scorer.
All. Time. Goalscorer. of Manchester United.
I've posted before that I would love for him to sign a new contract, pay as you play for less money, and to stay here and offer experience, fresh legs, and bursts of quality...
I made this thread in September about him being used in cups as a valuable member of the squad -

I stand by that post more than ever. With a lower money, pay as you play contract I honestly think you'd see the best out of Rooney, and I think it would be a victory for the club in how to handle older players that could make us more attractive to players signing for us - as in, 'we won't just toss you aside when we're done, we
look after our legends and know how to get the best out of them as they transition into the next stages of their careers'.
In short, I feel proud to've witnessed such a record being reached, and I still remember that little dynamo scouse kid that no-one could touch, that would never stop running, or fighting to win, that would never, ever throw the towel in in a match, or back out of a chase or a challenge...
You know what? It's that same grit that's serving him now. That's why he's back looking better and more determined and more ready for the fight than in years before.
Wayne Rooney, on the tiny off chance you read this, well done mate. We love ya.
