Wayne Rooney: Manchester United All Time Top Goalscorer

Not sure why you mentioned scholes, of course he's well thought of, one club man and class to go with it.
Times have changed now with regards to media and press, beckham would have had a lot more shit these days on social media and could also have been tarnished.
I don't know what more could have been asked of Rooney

Beckham would have got a lot more shit these days?

You sound like you werent around at the time ;)

Only because he has stayed that long tbh.

If Ronaldo hadn't left (or had come back!) we might be looking at a different all time top scorer.

Not taking anything away from Rooney mind you. It is a fantastic achievement.
There's no loyalty so unless the league drops to the competitive level of La Liga, I don't see anyone staying long enough to beat Rooney's record for a good while.

Just for the record and I stand to be corrected but I believe the late great Tommy Taylor still holds the club record for the highest goals per game of all those who have played 50 times or more for Utd. He played 189 games from his debut in March 1953 till his death at Munich, and scored 128 goals, his best season was 1956/57 when he scored a total of 34.

Played his first game for England in May 1953, replacing Nat Lofthouse. He played a total of 19 games and scored 16 goals.

Having seen him play as a youngster, I believe had he lived he would have been Utd's., and England's highest goal scorer of all time.

Hoping Pogba sticks around. Rashford too. Those two seem like lifers.

If Rashford stays, he has a chance to get near Rooney's record for sure.

Do you think Law would have been bought if Taylor had still been around or could they have been an unstoppable pair?

going by caf stats, rooney has 23 appearances and 4 goals right now, you think he has 15-25 goals in him from now til the end of next season? with him nowhere near up to the standard we should be chasing and rapidly getting phased out the team?

i think that's quite unrealistic. i shudder just to think of him being heavily involved next season.

I feel 15 is realistic-if he stays till end of next season. Would not bet against him getting to double figures this season, that then means same again next season. For him to beat Sir Bobby by one or two he would always have the negative lot on here trying to make something of it. Facts are he has done it in a lot less games that Bobby and at a much younger age -I know stats weren't as plentiful back then but I would doubt Bobby made as many goals as Wayne for others,

Ok, misty-eyed reminiscing moment, apologies in advance if this goes a little rawkish, but I'm feeling slightly emotive looking back at all those years...

I remember when he burst onto the scene in the Euros, his debut hat-trick for us ("remember the name - Wayne Rooney") the 'Roon-aldo' glory years, that over head kick against City, that pass and then that volley from RvP, the falling out with SAF and him sitting in the stands against Real (he shoulda played), the 'Moyes contract', the 'he shall always play' LvG years...

And now the man on a mission to get back into the same side he captains - in a way, you could say that sounds like a downer, and yet, right now, in the last few months, I've been more impressed with him than in the few years before. He's in better shape, his touch has improved (generally), he looks sharper, he sounds more grounded and determined in interviews. Oh, and he's just equaled Sir Bobby fecking Charlton's record as Manchester United's all time time goal-scorer.

All. Time. Goalscorer. of Manchester United.

I've posted before that I would love for him to sign a new contract, pay as you play for less money, and to stay here and offer experience, fresh legs, and bursts of quality...

I made this thread in September about him being used in cups as a valuable member of the squad - https://www.redcafe.net/threads/an-alternative-solution-to-the-rooney-situation.421977/

I stand by that post more than ever. With a lower money, pay as you play contract I honestly think you'd see the best out of Rooney, and I think it would be a victory for the club in how to handle older players that could make us more attractive to players signing for us - as in, 'we won't just toss you aside when we're done, we look after our legends and know how to get the best out of them as they transition into the next stages of their careers'.

In short, I feel proud to've witnessed such a record being reached, and I still remember that little dynamo scouse kid that no-one could touch, that would never stop running, or fighting to win, that would never, ever throw the towel in in a match, or back out of a chase or a challenge...

You know what? It's that same grit that's serving him now. That's why he's back looking better and more determined and more ready for the fight than in years before.

Wayne Rooney, on the tiny off chance you read this, well done mate. We love ya.

I don't really care about rooney's records, and i don't think anyone should care for what or if the "negative lot" would try to make anything out of him beating charlton's records by only a few goals. hardly seems like an important thing for manchester united fans to care about.

In my ideal world rooney isn't even here next season or at the very least wouldn't feature enough to get to double figures considering he really is not up to the level we need. His wages could be better employed into truly strengthening the team rather than keeping a poorly performing squad player that can come up with an average to good performance every now and then.

Do you think Law would have been bought if Taylor had still been around or could they have been an unstoppable pair?
Yes, Tommy was a centre forward, where as Law was an inside forward, but then again had there not been for Munich, both the Utd., team and England team in the 60's would have looked a lot different.

God that gave me a pang of nostalgia. Like he was still the manager. Sir Bobby as well.

Absolutely chuffed to bits for him, what an achievement. I hope he isn't finished with that either. He could seriously put 35-40 more on top of that and really nail it.

Club legend no doubt, but probably the least popular one out of any.

Its an odd one but his actions in trying to force his way out of the club has forever tarnished his legacy.

Even the likes of Beckham and Scholes are far more popular.

Possibly but i think a lot of the negativity towards him will ease a few years after he has left.

He's wasn't the first player to strong arm the club in contract negotiations and sadly he probably won't be the last either.

Cant remember the last time a player handed in a transfer request TWICE under SAF.

I'd like to think this will finally end the hate for Rooney which pops up in the caf a lot... (I'd love to be able to check how many of those also wanted Michael Carrick out of the club a few years ago)

I admire your optimism mate.

I He got pissed up and was too hungover to train at the busiest part of the season and we dropped enough points to win us the league, he's bitched to journalists about the last two managers when things were at there toughest (the captain should get his head down and lead by example).

Whats this bit about?

Glad he's finally done it. Should have already broken the record by now.

Happy to have had him between 2004 and 2012. He was a great player for us, when all's said and done.

Won't miss him when he's gone but respect for his goal scoring numbers. Top scorer for England and MUFC is a big deal.

Bobby Charlton used to be the best top trump card , unbeatable on appearances for united and goals . I remember playing with my lad thinking they`d never be beaten . Fantastic achievement .

When he broke on the scene with Everton he came to Old Trafford and got some horrendous abuse off the United fans. One of the worst I've heard for an opposing player, to the point where he got subbed off. "Have you ever had a salad have you f*ck" was one that sticks in the memory.
Months later he's turning out in our shirt. One of the things for me used to be his effort. Say like he was always getting back and making a tackle and then belting down the other end. Just been such a shame the last two years really. He's kind of limped over the record "line". Despite being top scorer I don't ever think he's a great goal scoring player. His finishing for me at times is terrible and I have always felt that way even when he was getting 15-20 a season.

Cant remember the last time a player handed in a transfer request TWICE under SAF.

He didn't actually hand in two transfer requests. He only asked to leave verbally the 2nd time according to Ferguson.

Off the top of my head Van Nistelrooy and Heinze asked to leave and/or put in 2/3 transfer requests each i think. Probably been a few others over the years as well.

.

I don't quite understand what you're proposing here.

Rooney has 2 1/2 years left on his current deal.

Are you suggesting that he would for some reason lower his own wage, or that we should actually be looking to extend a deal that he's already surely looking unlikely to be up to standard to see out?

Fair play to that scouser to get that record. Here hoping by the time I can talk about football with my kids, there will be a new record holder.

I'd also set the all time record if I had been given as much time at the club as Wayne

Jokes aside, unreal achievement. These kind of records hardly ever get broken and we're looking at a long time before it will be broken again - if it will be at all.

The kind of injuries and damage he's been getting should be enough for anyone to understand Wayne can't be the same player he once was.

Well done Wazza you deserve legend status. Hopefully we see a new era in now as Wayne's legs have well and truly gone.

It's crazy how people forget how good prime Rooney was, he could have walked into any team. Fantastic achievement and hopefully he can start getting goals more regularly again.

Whats this bit about?

Daniel Taylor revealed Rooney took the English journalists out before the Euros in the summer to get them behind England and spent a lot of it moaning about Van Gaal limiting him and Schweinsteiger being unpopular due to his special arrangements.

Cheers so this was after LVG had been sacked then. You dont have a link to that article by any chance?

Love this post, nice to see some positivity and nostalgia for a change. Let me go on and make a rawkish post too:

Football is just a game after all, the reason we love it, follow it, and spend so much time of our lives on simply watching or talking about it is because of the romance of it all. Because it has a beautiful narrative, a story that transcends the pitch and the players on it. It is larger than life, the story is exciting, full of twists and turns, and we are spectators in the audience, watching every frame, immersed in the tale. Wayne Rooney has been an integral part of Manchester United's story since 2004. He's had us spellbound and involved in the plot for over a decade, giving us some unforgettable moments to remember - crazy jumping out of seats and sofas yelling in joy, pulling our hair out in frustration, yelling curses in hate.

Not all of us appreciate his time at the club, not all of us would place him amongst United's greats. But like it or not, he'll soon be the greatest goalscorer we have ever had, and there will be none like him again. It's been a long tale this time, and he has entertained us throughout the years as both hero and villain. You'll never forget him.

Very oddly, I think I will miss the 'Rooonaay!' shout from the commentators once he is gone. I've heard it too many times, and it is stuck in my head.

Thanks for the all the memories, Wayne. You are a fecking legend.

What about the free kicks vs Arsenal in the 8-2? I know Young touched one so it was indirect, what about the other?

He touched the 2nd one too. Rooney then went to the GK's side and completely fooled him.

Rooney also had a great chip that game that hit the post/bar. He was on fire.

Thanks for the nice words, man. And a great post yourself. You sum up football in a way that reflects the true reality of it, the beauty of the whole spectacle.

These types of achievements do deserve a little philosophizing and looking back, we have, after all played a part in Rooney's United years - and his story has played a part in the background of our own lives.

It's a forum, you need to get used to people having a different opinion to you.

In reply to your post to me thinking I'll be upset at him getting a statue because I dislike him, you overestimate my hate towards him. I appreciate what he was to us as a player in his hay day, I just don't have much respect left for him because of how he has handle himself as a professional during that time. You can argue that he "made sacrifices" but it's always been a narrative. He played where Ferguson told him to play, end of. He also bitched and moaned about it in the press, moaned about the quality of his team mates and asked to leave twice. He got pissed up and was too hungover to train at the busiest part of the season and we dropped enough points to win us the league, he's bitched to journalists about the last two managers when things were at there toughest (the captain should get his head down and lead by example). He's done enough over the years to lose my respect and I idolised him for a long time.

If you've still got a bit of a crush on him, fair enough but don't tell people what they should think or say about him. He's a grown man earning a wage at least four times what he deserves.

It is a forum, you're right, and I understand people have different opinions on him. I wouldn't have joined a forum otherwise. However, to me, that should be left in the Rooney performances thread, whilst this thread should be about congratulating Rooney's special achievement, rather than clogging it up of BS.

The other bit of your text is just same old, same old, so I'll just leave you to it.

Congratulations to Rooney. Don't like the guy anymore but got to give him props for reaching the record.

I thought it was fitting that he levelled via a miskick. Sums up his level now. I fully expect him to break the record via a miskick or just a cheap tap in :)
