Wayne Rooney: Manchester United All Time Top Goalscorer

I've been a big critic of his in recent years but he deserves all the praise today.

It's a fantastic accomplishment.

An excellent record to hold for Wayne. Think of all the big strikers we've had in the past, the likes of Van Nistelrooy, Andy Cole, Denis Law and Mark Hughes. Rooney has outlasted and outscored them all which is a huge testament to just how prolific Rooney has been, even in moments of inconsistency. Yes, throughout his career there have been bumps in the road, and other unpleasant incidences but throughout everything that has happened, he has still stuck to his task and has done what he does best. No matter what we feel about him, there is no arguing with that record and that will be etched in stone for all time. Congratulations to him and I don't doubt he'll find a way to break it this season.

He hasn't. He has played as main striker or second striker almost always bar the two LVG years when he was played in that position the random number generator that LVG used decided to play.
Well i meant second striker, i just said attacking midfielder because of how deep he always comes. He only really played as the main striker for one season here, and he scored like 35 gaols.

He has achieved as much as Sir Bobby bar the World Cup...

Given the post-Munich context of much of Charlton's playing days, he achieved more and meant more for the club than Rooney would do if played here until he was sixty. He also a far superior player by all accounts and won a Ballon D'Or too (for what that's worth), coming second twice.

All for praising Rooney today but let's not pretend he's actually comparable to Charlton, either as a player or United icon.

Probably not the best thread for the discussion, but I essentially disagree. A No.10 is something that Mata did for Chelsea (or Lampard before him), or Ozil for Arsenal. Rooney pretty much never played that position. He was first and foremost a striker. On some seasons, he was the main striker, in some others played as second striker (probably the closest you find in modern football when it comes to that position is Griezmann) and so on.

He has been averaging around 20 goals per season, which is a very good return. And he has been world class for more than half of his career. So, there is plenty of stuff that he can be praised for on merit, no need to add that he played as an attacking midfielder for most of his career here.

Congrats to Rooney, it's some record, this. Be a while before his caught up too.

Was never his biggest fan, but can't deny what he has brought, and meant, to the club since coming over. Congrats Wazza.

As my post upset you so much, i edited it.

Really hope he breaks the record by scoring the winner against Liverpool. And Evertonian playing for Manchester United, it would be quite special.
He shouldn't even be playing against Liverpool. Unless you think beating Reading is justification to change our best team just to accommodate him.

It wouldn't hurt if he comes in the last 10 minutes while we are winning 3-0, and then scores his 250th goals for us.

Changing our formation to accommodate him - while we are at the best run since Fergie - would be a stupid move though.

He shouldn't start but he'll most likely be on the bench though.

Great achievement, will go down as a club Legend.

Club legend no doubt, but probably the least popular one out of any.

Its an odd one but his actions in trying to force his way out of the club has forever tarnished his legacy.

Even the likes of Beckham and Scholes are far more popular.

Great achievement, now he can go to China and get more money. Hopefully Rashford can break this record.

Any negativity or wumming in this thread should banned, in my opinion, just like other threads.

What Rooney has done today may not be witnessed again for some time. I mean, it has taken 40 years for it to be levelled.

I can understand people being pissed off with Rooney's contract negotiations. Some time ago I ranked my 10 greatest Legends and I ranked Rooney last even if he should break the club goals scoring record.
But today was great overall for us.
Personally I want to see him break the record against Liverpool.

The fact that so many fans are so salty over this, it makes it all the more sweeter.

Only because he has stayed that long tbh.

If Ronaldo hadn't left (or had come back!) we might be looking at a different all time top scorer.

Not taking anything away from Rooney mind you. It is a fantastic achievement.

If, buts and maybes are irrelevant. Fact is, despite all the stick he gets, Rooney stayed at United and he is now our joint top goalscorer of all time.

Not sure why you mentioned scholes, of course he's well thought of, one club man and class to go with it.
Times have changed now with regards to media and press, beckham would have had a lot more shit these days on social media and could also have been tarnished.
I don't know what more could have been asked of Rooney

I'd like to think this will finally end the hate for Rooney which pops up in the caf a lot... (I'd love to be able to check how many of those also wanted Michael Carrick out of the club a few years ago)

Why is it hateful to want him to leave because he's no longer good enough? Why is it not possible to criticise him without people like you labelling it as hate?

It's a great achievement and he should be proud of himself but I liked the fact that Sir Bobby Charlton was the recordman because he is awfully underrated by younger fans.

Funny thing is, he should probably have more than he did. His penalty record is poor overall, but during his prime he wasnt the penalty taker (RVN and then Ronaldo).. Even if he scored half of those that were awarded, wonder what number he would be on. (Though thats just wondering, he didnt take them for a reason of course).

Happy for him, did wish he broke the record today. Probably do it against Hull now.

It's a hell of an achievement. Can't see it being bettered for another few decades, unless Rashford fulfills his potential and we get another spell of prolonged dominance.

It's a forum, you need to get used to people having a different opinion to you.

In reply to your post to me thinking I'll be upset at him getting a statue because I dislike him, you overestimate my hate towards him. I appreciate what he was to us as a player in his hay day, I just don't have much respect left for him because of how he has handle himself as a professional during that time. You can argue that he "made sacrifices" but it's always been a narrative. He played where Ferguson told him to play, end of. He also bitched and moaned about it in the press, moaned about the quality of his team mates and asked to leave twice. He got pissed up and was too hungover to train at the busiest part of the season and we dropped enough points to win us the league, he's bitched to journalists about the last two managers when things were at there toughest (the captain should get his head down and lead by example). He's done enough over the years to lose my respect and I idolised him for a long time.

If you've still got a bit of a crush on him, fair enough but don't tell people what they should think or say about him. He's a grown man earning a wage at least four times what he deserves.

Huge, huge credit to him. He was fantastic today, and overall he's handled being dropped from the 1st team really well. To add to that I think he's handled himself brilliantly over the years, performing at a high-level year-in, year-out, while constantly under intense scrutiny from the press and fans, but more-so the press. Journalists have been relentlessly unfair to him in my opinion, and I think that gets a little bit overlooked in terms of how well he's done to rise above it.

I'd go as far as saying Rooney's been a class act, and that is before you even begin to assess his performances on the pitch. All-time top scorer says all you need to say, but that is while being shunted around the team, sometimes playing second fiddle to other strikers, always working hard for the team by tracking back and pressing, and all-in-all just being quite unselfish as a player.

He's incredibly underappreciated by our fans today, and I hope that will change once he's retired. I wanted him dropped earlier in the season, but that says nothing of my appreciation for what he's done for the club and respect for how he's gone about it.

Congrats Wayne.

Rooney - Club legend. Loved him when he joined the club. Still do. Great goal scorer when in form. He is one of the greatest United players of all time. He is one of the greatest English and British sportspersons of all time. Top scorer for club and country. And when that club is Manchester United, it is just extraordinary to hold the record.

Congratulations, Wayne. We are all proud of you!
