The best of our offensive players that started. Still slowing our play down. Illustrated by the situation before their first goal.

Probably should have come off around the 65/70 mark when he was clearly blowing but he got a second wind toward the end of the game. Drove us on to keep the pressure on, was a bit unlucky on a few occasions but all in all it wasn't really our day from a team perspective. Dust it off and get back to winning ways through the week.

Rashford did more than Rooney, Our offense was horrible all round but Rooney is every bit the culprit the rest are and Jose hasn't got the balls to take him off, instead shuffling him out wide instead of getting Martial on that wing.

We might have been better off if Rooney had been banned instead of Aguero.

I'm exaggerating but only slightly.

He actually had a decent game, wanted to get on the ball and drive forward when others around him let the game pass them by.

Good on ya Rooney. He played much better than a fair few. Can't blame him for much today.

Wasn't bad today. The problem is shifting other players all over the pitch just because he has to play. We need to take a big decision here.
Play the players in their correct position and play the right formation for the team. Like it or not, by virtue of him having to play he is preventing this. We just can't keep accommodating people or we'll never move on. Yes others were shit more than him today - but that doesn't mean he should still be starting over those on the bench.

I thought Rooney had a good game today.

Like when we play him on the wings

One of our better players today and his crossing was good, but still didn't do that much. Certainly not a game changing player or anywhere near it. He's alright with time on the ball if you want him to find a player though.

De Bruyne showed today what we need from a #10.

Rooney isn't that anymore.

His passion and determination was a credit to the supporters and for once he really did lead by example. However he definitely looks better coming in off the right and using his workrate to good effect than trying to do his work in the middle.

He has his uses but we are a much better team playing 433 and not shoehorning him into it. Bench player!

I honestly can't believe the state of this thread today, really makes you dispair. Easily our best player (with Valencia) and showed so much drive and energy. Expected to come into the thread to see loads of praise but again it's just people blinded by bias.

Had some good moments today and some bad.

Doesn't deserve to be criticised more harshly than the rest of the team today. Not saying much, but was one of our better players.

Tired massively the last 20 minutes, but first 70 he did really well I thought. Still not sure if he should be in our best 11 but he can clearly still have big performances in him.

credit when it's due, he's been very good today.
How the hell was he very good? De Bruyne was very good. Fernandinho was very good. Rooney wasn't. Not particularly bad either but definitely not very good.

More reason why he shouldn't be starting. It's a waste of space and subs if we have Zlatan and Rooney always knackered after 60 mins.

100%; such an important position for a team. KDB has all the tools to play well there, sadly it looks like Rooney hasn't got it any more.

Funny thing is i remember a utd player saying he wouldn't age well in terms of football.

played well on the wing though.

Not a big fan, well none at all actually, but he was ok today. Almost better on the wing

Not almost, he was better on the wing. We do lack pace there though but in general he's not a great number 10. I'd much rather play a midfield of Fellaini, Herrera and Pogba with Rooney out wide

It's telling that the most used defence for Rooney these days is "well [insert player] was worse than him" or "he was ok, not as bad as last week"

It's never anything like: He was great today; created chance after chance, bossed the game, scored a cracking goal, dribbled past several players, constantly looked a threat etc etc...

Oh, how nice it would be to be able to say that about a #10 in our team. Maybe we'll be able to once Rooney leaves.

Loads of praise? No one comes out of that shambles with any praise.

We need to play 4-3-3 & Rooney doesn't fit into that. Time for a manager to grow a pair & drop him to the bench.

This.

This thread is harsh on him, because he wasn't the worse performer out there but a midfield three is what we should be playing and he doesn't fit into that.

Think that was more to do with the intensity of the game though. Shaw looked dead by 70th minute too and he is probably our fittest player

Rooney looks shot every game. He hasn't got the legs anymore and it is obvious!

Best game so far this season. He was everywhere on the pitch and played with passion. Wide right seems to be his best position. Considering how poor Mhki was it might be best to allow Pogba freedom to move up and play Rooney on the right to play diagonals/crosses.

Your the one blinded by bias I suspect, on Whoscored Rooney has 6.60 making him our 5th worst player and two of the players lower than him were subs. It's a pity you don't win football games with a big mouth and by running around like a headless chicken, but at least you can fool some people it seems.

People need to wake up, Rooney as a 10 is dire, especially in a fast counter attacking system where you need to be quick and pass the ball with speed and directness, not take a breather before slowly sending a diagonal cross to Valencia.

It's amazing how people can claim Rooney was our best player today, but got shifted into at least 3 different positions over the course of the game.

Reminded me of Rooney of old today, in terms of passion and aggression. For example, pushing Guardiola, or a late challenge on Bravo, etc. Haven't seen that in a while.
