But what if we had a player who didn't misplace passes, and actually scored 1 and assisted 1 in the same game? but because they weren't getting the chance we will never know!

Just because Rooney is doing the bare minimum, is that enough to keep your spot in a hungry squad full of great attackers?

No, but I wouldn't say assisting or scoring a goal in the dying minutes is the bare minimum either. If it gets us the three points it's fantastic but I'm also in the boat that agrees that we could do better but only Miki or whoever else is challenging Rooney can prove that.

I am not Rooney's biggest defender but this is definitely true. The issue at the Euros certainly wasn't Rooney. Besides Rashford nobody looked anything like their usual self in an England shirt. Besides Joe Hart who produced his customary fumbles...

Has anybody said the issue at the Euros was Rooney?

If he puts in a great performance and helps United win the game, then Rooney will convince a lot of fans that he still has a lot for football left in him for United.

Play as he has been playing for the last 2-3 seasons and City draws or wins the game convincingly, then it might be the start of the end of Rooney's career.

Which is why I think the derby is a pivotal game for Rooney. Should he put in another shite/ineffective performance as captain and City go on to win, I can't think of a better opportunity/excuse for Mourinho to finally drop him. No one will complain, not the players, not the press and especially not the fans.

One game is far too small a sample to convince any "right minded" supporter.

It's the biggest game for United in quite some time. 2 heavyweight teams, 2 brillaint managers. If rooney happens to be the one who has a hand in United losing, i can see Jose slowly phase him out. If he performs more than what the majority of the fans think he is now capabale of performing then, he will win quite a numbers of fans on his side who will be ready to give him more time in the first team.

He won't keep assisting or scoring every game, then what can he hide behind? that's my point. If his general performance doesn't pick up he's going to be under huge pressure.

That is clearly incorrect though. It has shown by the amount of dross in this thread that the better he gets and the more he contributes the harder people will sink to convince everyone he's still shite. In theory this is great, but in practice you only need to look at this thread to see just how low some sink to heap shit on him. He's been pretty good with several contributions and the running narrative is that we'd be better off without him.

I am not convinced that some people will ever regain any form of objectivity on the matter. The attention that it garners for some users will continue to be a card used to derail the thread and pick petty arguments.

Anyway, absolutely pumped for the derby tomorrow. I want Rooney to have a banger because when he plays well the team plays well.

He will hide behind the 'fact' that Mourinho put the spanners in the works by putting an end to his 'Scholesque evolution' to deep lying midfield playmaker. There is always something to hide behind until a manager pulls his finger out of his arse and puts an end to all the shit. Whats funny is that all the people putting up his figures are likely the same guys who ignored Nani's figures back in the day, they would be the same who demanded six years for Moyes....

Ok honest question, how well do you think rooney has played in the past 3 matches? In my opinion, Rooney goes wrong with the basic things like trapping the ball, first touch, passing to a team mate etc which ends up infuriating everyone as we end up giving the ball away in dangerous positions or our attack / counter attack gets screwed.

Yes, he has provided the assists when it mattered and that is great. But he is the captain, the highest played and the most experienced player at United.
Having three- four good moments in 90 minutes won't mask his shocking abilities to do the simple stuff.

I simply want him gone, but if he plays well tomorrow, i can hope that he still has something to contribute to the team.

I also hope he has a great game tomorrow. As you said, if he plays well, the team will end up playing well.

Also, like @Walters_19_MuFc said, there's more love for Bastian here than Rooney

It is mind boggling.
Rooney, though not great, IMO, is currently a better player than Bastian.
And when you consider that Bastian has done nothing of note for MUFC, it makes it even more baffling.

I want Rooney gone, as I feel we will be a better team without him, but I also think Bastian is not good enough for a team aspiring to win the league. I want both of them gone.

Again just shows you, pundits don't watch him.

I can only assume that because the pundits need to get through so many (EPL) games, they just watch highlights.
If there are say 6 league matches on a Saturday, I highly doubt that a pundit will sit and watch 9 hours of football, with high concentration, analysing each player with accuracy.
This could be the reason why some pundits don't really pick up on Rooney's misgivings.

For the England games however, there is no excuse.

Jamie Carragher also said Mourinho was the wrong fit for United when he was linked to the job in March/April

The reason for that was obvious.
The last time we had a Galactico class manager, we won more domestic trophies than any other English team for 2 decades.
He probably thought: Jose + MUFC + unlimited cash = LFC not winning a league for another 20 years!

Jamie Carragher said:
What is it about our culture that enjoyment is taken when greats are on the wane?
Maybe it's because the first to incite such enjoyment are the very newspapers you and your kind write for, Jamie. Maybe it's because we're initially told by those publications that underwhelming talents like you are God's gift to football. Maybe it's because you and your colleagues were rarely, if ever, truly 'greats' on a European scale let alone a world-level. And maybe it's because we're sick of blatant cronyism, such as you speaking up for your good friend Wayne. People are pissed off with being lied to for so long.

Rooney, carra, gerrard is the over the hill trio that keeps on being selected.

Critizing rooney is critizing himself.

Lampard has the grace to accept his time is up at least, and still performing in an acceptable level till his last chelsea day

Lampard had more footballing intelligence than those three combined.

Exactly my point. They often depend on cliches and their analysis on a lot of games, is often very wrong.

I really hope he doesn't drop back so far tomorrow that he isolates Zlatan. He's yet to take the positioning necessary to be effective as a true #10. I honestly couldn't describe what role he's played in one breath. He's been almost everything but a #10. United are going to need him quickly stitching the midfield and attack together to effectively counter City as they could. He just hasn't done that yet this season. Not sure if he really has in the role in his off and on starts there in the past two years.

He's gonna score today.

He's going to have a hard job dealing with their pressing. Pep will have them closing him down especially quick knowing he is prone to poor touches and dropping his guts under pressure. It'll be interesting to see how deep he drops to "find space".

Well, he can't control the ball even if he's alone on the pitch, so their pressing doesn't make any difference when it comes to Rooney. :D

I can't stand him, but I think he will be fired up for this and hopefully he will score. He always does well against these wankers.

I swear some of you would like Rooney to have a stinker and have us lose the match just to see Rooney dropped.

Danny Murphy has been calling him amazing in the last few weeks. We should consider his opinion too.
And in the last weeks a lot of the criticism has come from people with nothing to do with United.
And alot of it also probably came from you. Just saying.
