He isnt an okay option when you can get someone better for 1/10th the price. As for not caring about wages, going through your posting history.

Seems like you cared about wages before rooney turned to shit. So explain to me wr8, how it doesnt make sense to have joe cole here, back in the day, for 90k as a rotation option but you are more than happy for rooney to play the same role at 300k per week.

That's the kind of beating that would make me stay away from the forum after being caught so far up Rooney's arsehole.

If he can help us secure 4th and win the EL before he leaves in the summer then great, it'll be an appropriate way for his time with us to come to an end.

Oof this is a great post.

Brutal, but great

I trust Jose, when i see rooney in the first 11, I just hope he wont cost us but if Jose can pick him then ill still support the players (unless they play shit)

He was pure pathos today. His dying hair transplant all whispy and luminescent in the spring sunshine.

If that's what £30,000 plus worth of hair transplants gets you then there isn't much point is there. He's a walking advertisement for the fact they aren't very good?
I don't want him to fail, I'm sure he doesn't want to fail. He just isn't very good anymore.
Poetic post!

@wr8_utd had been dismissing Rooney's wages as a concern for months as well (if not years). Really poor form from him. The forum should be about giving your honest opinion. Otherwise debate is meaningless.

It might be you have to take some sort of supplements with them that he can't take due to anti doping rules. Thus the transplant isn't working. I can't think of any other sportsman who's had one done while still playing.

I wish that Wayne Rooney looked after himself the way the likes of Ronaldo and Zlatan do. By all accounts, its his physical condition that's held him back this season and that is something he can control. We talk about him like Rooney like an old man but Totti's still going in his 40s. If he wants it badly enough he can turn it around. I'd like to see that because, as Rooney has shown a lot, even when he's playing awfully, he has that knack Jose spoke of recently of being there when the ball drops. Today's goal was a case in point. Surely someone can speak to the lad and just get him hitting the gym a bit more? If Ricky Fatton could get down to 10.5 stone for fights, Rooney must be able to trim down to the point he can be the player he should be.

Woah.. he have regressed too much.

Playing with heavy reliance on experiences nowadays like drawing fouls and getting free kicks sometimes... full stop.

Good goal though last game, good thing he still has that scoring instinct even if he's no longer sharp. Job done.

Poor touch, sluggish and clumsy. He stands our like a sore thumb. How anyone can say he played well is beyond me.

I don't think it's all about that. He's lost a yard like all players his age but doesn't have the touch or passing to make up for it in other ways .Most players change their game to suit the aging process. Rooney isn't good enough at anything else to excel in a different role at a club like this. His game was all about aggression and that initial burst of power and a rocket shot. He's done as a striker at the top level and isn't any more effective further back either. Players genetics also play a huge part. That's why players who go on that long are the exception to the rule.

He got down the touch line sharpish when we were countering Burnley. I didn't see him running that much more slowly than in previous seasons. What is different is how long he can maintain his bursts for, and how much it seems to affect him. Again, I think that is mostly down to him needing to put down the cigs and hit the weights.

These days, with the huge amounts of money in the game and even more so, the huge amounts of money we make, does it really make a difference to us? We've had so many players on big wages and we can afford it and give even more players more money. We have Lingard on 100k a week which is something that would have been shocking back in the Joe Cole time. It's an era where even clubs like Watford can go around throwing 35m bids for players, so how much we offer Wayne or anyone else, how much does it really matter?

He's done like.
He's a 300,000 a week striker playing in the most expensively assembled team in PL history and he just got his his 3rd pl goal of the season, in the end of April against Burnley. How can this even be a discussion anymore. This is the second season of way below average standard play from him too. He's been a great player for us. He's clearly done as done can be for a team wanting to win the pl.

Months definitely. I don't really care who we sign on what ages right now tbh. I'm sure Pogba, RvP, Zlatan, Falcao, AdM and Bastian are/were all on massive wages but why use those as a stick to measure someone's performance or worth with. The club doesn't seem to care about us giving these players those sort of contracts so why should we? With all the sponsorship deals that have come in, there's loads of money to go around really. I'm not sure keeping Rooney around for a year (it's not something I'm even advocating) is going to hurt us financially in any way at all.

It's a business at the end of the day. Rooney treated us and football like a business, which is fine. What goes around comes around. It's just business. No player is bigger than the club.

Well I'm not even saying we must keep him at the club. If he does stick around as our "experienced" player as an alternative to Zlatan then so be it. It's not going to hurt us financially and Rooney knows his position in the squad and will come in and play when asked to.

Are you not going to explain the massive contradiction between asking why anybody would care about Rooney's wages when as @MJJ pointed out, you have questioned the wages of players in the past?

I know it won't hurt us financially and to be honest if the manager wants him around he'll keep him and there's nothing any fan can do about that. The manager isn't stupid though. He's handled this really well. Nearly everyone in the world can see that from a business and footballing perspective Rooney is done at Manchester United.

Didn't I mention it in the other post? This moment in time, does money really matter to us? Maybe earlier it did and we lost out on the likes of Robben/Hazard etc because of wages and agent fees. With all the money that's come into the league and the huge amounts of money we make and blow on average players anyway, I've slowly come to not really bother myself about how much we pay for players in terms of fees or wages. I'm sure you can scroll through posts from over the years and maybe find inconsistencies but I really don't really generally care anymore how much we pay who. Bastian was around for a year and a half on huge wages and it didn't really bother me either. Post Fergie we've thrown stupid money around and I've just come to accept that. Yes maybe once in a while where I see a mediocre player get big wages I still might express shock but in general I don't care anymore what we spend on who.

I agree. Rooney was huge for us commercially but with Pogba and Zlatan coming through and the likely signing of more superstars, I think even in that aspect Rooney's appeal is probably reduced to the club but well he's my favorite United player ever so I'm not complaining if he sticks around and certainly not over the wages he gets. We've given players like Bastian (who did absolutely nothing for this club) big wages to be a cheerleader for a year, I have no problems with a club legend sticking around. Just watching him play today, knowing it's probably one of his final few games for the club, brought a smile to my face just as a fan of the guy so you won't find me opposed to him being here another year as long as he's not close to being near the first team lineup.

Some of the comments here

Yes, we already know he's over the hill and earns 300k per week but he came in today, scored a goal and Rashford got a bit of a rest who will be fresh for Thursday. As far as I'm concerned, he done good.
With the Arsenal and Liverpool result, been a great end to a pretty shitty week.

Happy he scored and hope the goal is given to him (rather than an OG). Also was happy he wasnt stuck up front as we would have really struggled as we have when hes played there for the last few seasons (silent domination and all).

But as a first teamer, hes done. As a squad player, he will do the job I guess for the rest of the season with Zlatan out. But for next season, we gotta replace him. Sad but its the only way we progress. Hope he can enjoy the team winning the EL to finish the season.

Don't think the dubious goals committee exists anymore so it's going to be his.

Great player for us no doubt and he was very handsomely rewarded for that too, many many times over. Awful poor and frustrating the past few years though. His decline was so brutal and swift too. He may find a decent level playing regularly with Everton behind the striker but I don't see it really. So many half decent moves break down because of him nowadays and he's playing with better players here. It should be easier.... He was always a little over rated even at his absolute top level and I think that's kind of continuing now. People expecting him to magically turn it on in some game and run the thing. That's done now. He should be one of the leading players in the league the last few years, statically etc. Indeed that's what his status and wage suggest. Sadly as we all know that couldn't be much further from the reality of the situation. Crazy situation to be fair. Can't blame Rooney though. The club gave him the contract.

That slip when he was in a really good position and could've taken a shot into the far corner basically sums him up nowadays.

Tries but ultimately he never is what he was.

Martial plays better with Rooney than he does with Zlatan. The former will be the main man for the team during the run-in and the latter will be the key to getting him playing at his best.

Happy to see him scored and played well. Not sure why some feel it is needed for them to come and be negative about it. Same people nevertheless. Typical.

His goal today was excellent.
That's the sort of goal which we'd not score at OT.
He reacted fastest to the loose ball and that is something he has not been able to do for the last few years.

You mean like the 100k we had young(same role that lingard has in the squad right now) on? Something you complained about as well in the past. I mean we were clearly rich enough back then to offer 250k and then 300k to rooney so why did 90k for cole/or 100k for young mattered?

I don't agree at all. LVG introduce Rashford and also started the phase out of Rooney. He did it in a very clever way that even Mourinho is emulating. He acts like everything is ok and that Rooney should play whenever possible - thing is it wasn't made possible! At the end of the term with LVG he had introduced Rooney to the bench. Just look at how Mourinho is handling the thing in the same manner. Mourinho is not doing anything to make it look like Rooney is a player going downhill. He's just easing him in on the bench, just like LVG. I think it's been played perfectly.
The LVG part is myth. LVG was actively helping Rooney settled as midfielder. He got subbed off, or not starting only due to his fitness/ injury. Whenever he was fit he played under LVG.

Rooney was cent this game by his nowadays standard. Not assured if he's to start our important games or sub on at crucial time though.

Played well yesterday, in a season where we've struggled to kill off games, that 2nd goal was hugely important. I don't believe Rooney has much left to give United but credit where its due, he stepped up and helped make a dodgy game easy.

Because it is no longer about analysis and having a discussion for them. It is about getting petty digs in and yelling "finished!" in as many sentences and as many posts as possible, saying 'fat', 'granny' and 'shite for years' so everyone can pat them on the back and tell them how great they are and validate the nonsense. Why else would somebody go that far out of their way to show they don't have a grip in the reality of the situation? It would make no sense otherwise.

On the performance, I thought he was rusty as hell. He probably should have had two goals and I thought that was a blatant pen on him as well. Excellent strikers instincts though, quickest to react after the save and he got the reward. If he's deputizing for Rashford down the stretch of this season, getting confidence boosting goals and minutes under the belt will be very very important for the tail end of our season. If he can chime in with this kind of average contributions per minute that he's had this season it will be huge.

One thing that I think will really help Martial is the fact that Rooney can actually stretch and push the inside player back, when he drops he rarely stays sitting deep. He always puts more pressure back onto the line which will help free up the space from Tony Martial. Rashford should get the nod against City though in the same formation. Straight swap, no doubt about it.

Did his job by scoring the goal and giving Mourinho the opportunity to rest Rashford. I still think there's one big goal left in him which will decide a major match for us, but he's off in the summer. Zlatan injury won't change much.
