He is ill, mate. And has knock in both ankles.
Yep, the boss said it in the press-conference.
MOURINHO PROVIDES UPDATE ON ROONEY
Jose Mourinho has provided an update on Wayne Rooney’s fitness during a press conference in Brussels ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League clash with Anderlecht.

Rooney has missed the Reds’ last two games and was not in the squad that travelled to Belgium for Thursday’s quarter-final first leg at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium.
Mourinho didn't rule his captain out of contention for Sunday's Premier League encounter with Chelsea, telling reporters: "He is not happy with his condition. He’s trying to work, which he does, but he’s not confident, he’s not happy.
"He has bad feelings with his ankle and he’s not ready to play. Let’s see for the weekend, let’s see for next week. We don’t have many players and need everyone to try to be available. For tomorrow, no."

Didn't make the trip and doesn't want to risk it. Don't really see the point of going on the trip if he is injured/recovering still.

It's pure manipulation from Rooney and Mourinho.

We all know that Rooney is not injured and is not playing because he can't accept his situation.

I'm sure that Mourinho should have told him to stay on the side until he really needs him and he may leave this summer without fuss.

I'm gutted a bit because it's 12 years now he's playing at United, but we should have get rid of him earlier.

I hope that we can get 50M£ from a Chinese club or a free transfer to the US, but I don't want to see him staying in England

Might be a deal to make it seem less like he's been dropped so he's more desirable when he's 'fit' again.

Potentially benefits both club and player then.

Im happy hes had his testimonial for us because he deserved it for his service.

But im also happy with the way Jose has removed him from the side and starting line up. Its a benefit for us especially going forward. Trying to move things around just to find a place for him in the team affected United as a whole and saw us not improving. We play better stuff with him not in the team.
The one thing I didnt like was seeing him as the first goto sub as it was never effective and basically a waste of a sub (think Stoke away is the only time I can think of Rooney doing something since Hull away), especially with Rooney more focused on running after the ref asking for a foul.

Its sad, but I honestly cant see where he could play for us. We have better strikers, wingers and midfielders than him. Even as a sub, I think we have more impact players than him.

That sums it up, right there.
I'm assuming that he is now always: injured, ill or unavailable, that Jose has told him that he is surplus to requirements.

It's a crazy situation when you think about it. He's missed so many games because of illness or a small knock, or not quite being match fit. It's hard to believe it's not just because Jose has told him there's no place for him in the first team. He doesn't even turn up to watch us a lot of the times when he's out of the squad. You'd think there'd be more talk about it in both the media and forums like this, but nobody seems to care. There have been times this season when I've completely forgotten he even exists. He's 100% gone in the summer, and I can't ever recall such a high profile player fading away like this.

That 3-1 loss against Watford back in September, when Jose tried to shoehorn him into the same line-up as Zlatan and Pogba, pretty much marked the end of his United career. (Almost) everyone since has accepted that he no longer has a place in the starting XI; and over time, most people have accepted that he no longer a place in the team.

Getting him out of the team with no fuss has been handled very well, but still having to say he's ill, injured or unavailable instead of dropped shows that he had way too much influence to begin with.

Yup. Couldn't have done it any better. Ppl are not even asking about him anymore. No fuss, no drama. Slowly but steadily froze him out of the team.

All club legends suffer from this problem.
Basically, club legends need to be sold and got out of the club, asap, once the decision has been made.
I remember when Keane was sold, I think we heard in the papers that his relationship with Fergie was not too good. Then a few weeks later, he was moved out (to Celtic, IIRC).
Same with Beckham. We saw him with the cut on his forehead. Then few weeks later, he was sold to Madrid.
Stam was a complete shock to the system. Everybody expected him to be at OT for years and over the Summer, he was sold.
With Rooney - he is lingering. Had Fergie been here, he'd have been moved on as soon as the decision to sell him was made. Jose has allowed him to stay for an extra 6 months, during which time, he will rarely play.

So true! No one seems to care about him anymore. Jose couldn't have managed this better.

If it was any other player there would be uproar. In all fairness Jones didn't play for nearly a year at one point and then got reinjured and the place went in to meltdown and that was even before his decent run of form this year. Rooney has constantly been ill/injured with various different injuries in what feels like forever and nobody bats an eyelid.

I can't see it happening but hope for his sake he gets a few minutes cameo at Old Trafford before the end of the season. (not however if we are chasing a game, I'm not that sentimental).

Wait for him to show up fully fit for Carricks testimonial.

It's kinda sad and fitting his England and United careers are petering out in this fashion.

Can't really say I feel for him though.

Mourinho said in his previous press conference that if we needed a goal he would bring on Rooney. I know the injury to Ibrahimovic happened but wouldn't that be the reason to bring on Rooney ahead of Martial? Something's definitely not right between the pair.

Or..or..maybe..perhaps... He has realised that Rooney is well past it and even a sulking Martial offers more threat than him.

Forgot he was on the bench. His pride will have taken too many body blows this season. He's probably desperate to leave.

I think its just that Rooney isn't that good anymore

He's hardly played since that record breaking goal vs Stoke in January. Only 130 mins since the start of February. All pretty poor performances

He's gone in summer. Jose favoring Martial on him in a crucial game even with all problems Jose got with Martial says it all. Jose reached the same conclusion on Wayne the fans have reached long time ago.

I would have been even more worried had he come on today. Im still worried he will start up top for us in certain games.
TBH, id only like to see him come on if we are winning by 2 goals and we need to take off Rashford (as an example) to rest him for the next game.

Despite the juncture we are at I still half expected him to get the nod over Martial when Ibra went off.

What the hell? Why would anyone have brought him on in that game over Martial? He's barely even fit let alone match ready. Bringing on Martial was a no-brainer. The midfield was already secured by bringing on Fellani and Martial is the natural fit wide forward on the left hand side.

Not really sure what the moaning is about here? "He could have possibly come on and been shit, how shit is that?..." .... plain weird.

He's only been back training properly for a few days after being injured at the start of the month.
He's probably desperate to leave
I really don't think it is him that is desperate, to be honest. Most of your posts are awful attention-bait mail articles and bizarre nether-worldly tweets that seem to waver in and out of a fantasy reality that most of the fans seem to have been skullwormed by. What an utterly odd state to be in.

I thought it was humorous when the joke started to go around about Jose being asked about Rooney in every press conference until you come into this thread and see how sad it is that some of the utter dirge that gets circulated and how the desperation element is confirmed to be a never-ending cycle that is perpetrated by the unnecessary behavior in this thread.

Probably time to just break it and let the rest of the season play out and stop trying to shape the narrative.

You seem upset.

I was wondering how you were going to spin it

It's got nothing to do with injuries. He's been training all month as Jose has stated and he just keeps "feeling something" when it's close to match day.

If he was on the bench he was fit to play. End of.

Martial wasn't the "natural fit" for replacing Ibra, he was brought on and the formation reshuffled, moving Rashford central.

What's the midfield being secured by Fellaini got to do with anything? Rooney isn't a midfielder, he's a striker and the only one we had on the bench.

As Keane said, that will have hurt him last night and if it didn't, he's no longer got the "eye of the tiger".

It's going to be very interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out for him, especially with Zlatan crocked.

I seem to remember someone saying due to his lifestyle and genetic dispositions he would be done by his early 30s and getting absolutely slaughtered for it.......who could that have been

Now that Zlatan's unfit, Rooney would get more game times isn't he.

He have been so poor this season, hoping he would turn it up and perform once Mourinho play him.

Special credits should be given to Wayne for not moaning nor complaining being dropped completely from the squad.

I admit I worry too much about him coming on when he's on the bench. I just don't see the team improving if he's brought on.
So I give extra attention to who's warming up. He's often sent out early to warm up but the thing is I've never seen him actually warm up. He parks himself in a Ronaldo free kick esque stretch position and stands there until he's either brought on or sent to the bench.

I might be taking my agenda to another level, having a go at him even if he doesn't come on the pitch.
But this just seems so odd, he's never moving when the camera is pointing to him. Yesterday the commentator said Young and Rooney had just been sent out again, and there Young was making his runs but Rooney was already working on his stretch.

Might be a partial reason why he doesn't seem remotely fresh when he's brought on.

He'd probably start against Burnley. But it's sad how it's all ending for him. He doesn't look a quarter of the player that was at his peak.
