The number ten isn't a playmaking position, the playmaking comes from the centre mids, he played there today but he doesn't control the match well enough for his contribution to matter much at all.

So him him being poor doesn't matter because he's so poor that he's kind of irrelevant. I don't know if this is another elaborate get out clause you're creating for him or a severe criticism.

Think you guys are wasting your time with Nick. He'd defend Rooney even if he scored a hat trick of own goals.

Is the Wayne Rooney of the last 100 or games, the worst player to ever play 100 games for us? (Just taking that time period into account)

NO! and i'm not claiming that, its not even close to what I am saying, you have just decided that. I am saying he should be dropped but the reason martial et al are poor has nothing to do with the fact he isn't giving the ball to them because he prefers the right. In no way is this a defence of him, its an indictment on the other players as well but not as a way to defend him, it is just to say whether he plays it right or left doesn't affect our overall team performance because firstly he doesn't control the game enough for it to and secondly no matter who is on either side they are individually playing poor.

I've thought that.

Is the Wayne Rooney of the last few years the worst regular starter we've had in my lifetime? He's up there. Or down there rather.

Moaning about Rooney is pointless ATM. LVG's inability to bench him even when he was at his very worst was one of the reasons I totally lost faith in him pretty early on, and I'm beginning to lose faith in Mou too cos this is just plain stupidity. I mean we now play on the fecking wing in the 2nd half. This is a player who can barely jog in the first half yet you move him to the position that needs pace the most when he can barely walk. Then he literally plays Pogba in defence. Can't blame Rooney anymore, he's not selecting himself. If there's something so special about him that makes him unbenchable and unsubbable that only these coaches see despite everyone else in the world seeing he's shit then they should carry on and keep getting sacked. I'm just so dissapointed in Mourinho, I really had faith in him sorting this Rooney mess out.
He's gonna look really stupid if he benches Rooney now and a lot more stupider if we still lose after benching him. I really hate it when coaches refuse to make obvious right decisions until it costs the team, it's just plain stupidity

He is not responsible for their poor performances, but given how long he has been poor for he is the one people want out first, and that's fair. Credit for admitting how bad he was by the way,
I'll never not want him dropped if he's past his use to us. I know the fanboy tag gets thrown at me and I am indeed a huge Rooney fan but I wanted him dropped last year as well when he wasn't performing and I don't want him staring next weekend either.

And there are some on here who'd berate him even if he scored a hat trick of 45 yarders (in the correct net)

I think the defenders have so little to defend that they're tying themselves in knots.

These are some very confused posters.

I don't understand why they have to go so far to defend someone who played like shit. What game are they watching?!

And there are some on here who'd berate him even if he scored a hat trick of 45 yarders (in the correct net)
I admit they're are extremists on both sides and Nick is definitely one of them. He said Wayne was still a world class player a few weeks ago. I knew then, discussing this topic win him was pointless.

His post do have comedy value though. I agree that he doesn't come across as someone you could have a serious discussion with on this topic. Got to give credit though for sticking to his convictions on Rooney dispite everything.

The rest of the team had nothing. Do you realize that? Rooney is not going to be dropped, not only because he is the captain, but because there are many other players who are performing worse.

Surely you are Rooney. No one can be that blind to such a poor performance and then defend Rooney. Who in the team has a worst first touch than Rooney? Who has played in Rooney's position consistently and come up short? Who in the team performed worse than Rooney?

But he isn't going to score a hattrick of 45 yard screamers, so your hypothetical hyperbole is irrelevant. May as well say if he wins the Ballon D'or, or if he leads England to the World Cup final. Just give up and accept defeat, your favourite player is terrible.

He is at the point where bad isn't even enough of a word to describe him, you can look at every PL team and their no. 10, EVERY team have a player that simply outplays Rooney in every way possible, even every team have a better midfielder than Rooney, and even a better striker. The club is in deep shit if he is gonna start every game for the next 3 years, like this club isn't in deep shit already.

Im starting to understand the Rooney apologists a bit more, he's awful and needs dropping, but to be honest, most of our players do when you hold them to similar standards.

They do get dropped. That's the crux of the entire argument.

Lingard had a stinker and he hasn't been let out his cage yet. I would argue Rooney was just as bad as lingard, Atleast as ineffective anyway. Let's see if he gets the same treatment.

I think many of us are just tired of watching the same old crap from him every week. Atleast before he was popping up with an assist or goal out of nothing, today he didn't look anywhere near.

I guess we will see what mourinho does once he gets under pressure. If we don't win our next 2 there will be questions about the whole team no doubt.

You can't be fairer than that mate

I'm still surprised that anyone even bothered to reply the guy! I honestly believe he gathering all his loving comments of Rooney and sending them to Colleen and Wayne to say "Hey, I'm sticking up for you, please send me an autographed shirt and come to my 13th birthday party"

Trevor Sinclair talking absolute shite on MOTD2, saying he's still good enough to be in the team on current form but he's not a #10, and should be played as a #4/holding midfielder alongside Carrick.

I really cannot understand. Can we sign a petition? Fly a banner? Boo? Kidnap him?? How do we stop Rooney from trying to play football

Just bench him, bin the no. 10 position, play 433 and give the players time to get use to it and lets finally fecking move forward as a club. People arguing he deserved all those starts this season when myself along with others argued giving that time and faith to other players would have achieved much more. Had we given so much time, patience and opportunity for Mkhitryan to get settled (who is a much better player than Rooney), who's to say we wouldn't be in a much better position right now.

Said it before the season started that whether or not we are up there challenging for the title is purely down to when Rooney is dropped. He is a number 10 FFS, his job is to make the players around him look better, to dictate play. You can't even use the other players are worse argument, for one because not only is it his job to get them going as he is the captain but he is also playing in the most important position in our attack. The other players are worse argument is also wrong because we know the other players are capable of much better, Rooney will not get much better than this, at best he is "okay" now. He doesn't have world class potential like Pogba, Martial and Rashford, he doesn't have the technical ability, passing ability or speed of Mkhitryan and he has nothing on Ibra, so I can't fathom how he's still playing.

I don't see how anyone who wants the best for their club could watch that and still think he has a role to play. His leadership qualities are overrated too, true leaders wouldn't allow their troops to lose to fecking Watford. The best for the club is to just put him out of his misery, all our best players are making way and being moved around for probably the worst number 10 in the premier league, no exaggeration.
