He's not exactly been in great form to be fair. You can make a case for Giggs/Welbeck/Nani being deserving of a spot based on their recent form.

Maybe the Norwich match made Fergie feel that Rooney does better without RvP beside him, and will look to switch them later in the match and give a fresh Rooney a try.

He's on the bench. Maybe SAF playing mind games with him. Get him wound up at being dropped and see him make a big impact from the bench.

Worked for Beckham in 03.

WTF? he was sold a few weeks later. I think its clear that all is not well with the fergie-rooney relationship.

Correct decision for me, we only want one proper forward for this game so it was between him or RVP. No point sticking him on the wing when we have players who can do a better job out there.

has to be some kind of a small injury. i cant believe saf would play giggsy over a fully fit rooney.

Yeah but surely in the middle, which is where you'd presume giggs will play Rooney or Kagawa are the better option? I can understand giggs starting, figured he or Clev would play alongside Carrick, but both of them seems quite odd to me, assuming everyone is fit.

People are making such a fuss over nothing.

Yeah it's a bit of a meltdown really. I'd have him starting no doubt, but I don't think winning this game is dependent on him starting. I'd have been more surprised if Van Persie had been left out to be honest.

After the 1st leg Rooney was criticised and now he doesn't start the second and the fecking world's ended. I don't get it, he can come in and influence the game heavily.

Who cares?!?!

All this "he's the heartbeat of the team" bullshit thats branded around about him is sickening! There is enough quality on that pitch to win us the match!

I don't know if it's nothing, but I find it amazing for people to compare it to Beckham in 2003. Absolutely insane, the two just don't compare at all.

Yep, the team is more than capable of pulling it off tonight. He will come on later and still manage to have an influence if needed.

We're playing against one of the best teams in the world, who are no worse then us when both are at full strength. We are dropping one of our two truly world class players to put on Welbeck/Giggs. Him in the team would give us a much better chance to win, but obviously we can still win it. It'll just be more difficult

He's had some shit games up til now but this comes as a big big surprise to me. Van Persie is now taking over the crown?? Rooney usually put in good team work. The only reason I for this must be that he wants to save some fire power in case we need to grab a goal at the end or to mess up the strategy for Moureen.

it's a huge surprise and a risk IMO.

For me Rooney is our best player.

Of course some will be fairly shocked at the news. But Fergie gets it right far more often than not...

Hes not our heartbeat. But it is surprise for such a big name player being left out for such a big game. Anyway, hope he makes an impact if become comes on.

The bigger risk is what I hear about Giggs in midfield. That's what's scaring me right now :nervous:

How many big match have we won without Rooney playing a big part since Ronaldo left? He is a big game player. He will be missed i fear.

Welbeck over Rooney? :wenger::confused:

Yeah, really amazed that everyone was pretty much unanimous in wanting Welbeck to start this, when he really isn't that good on the wing, and is having a pretty poor season up to date.

I agree. I'm OK with Welbeck starting but not at the expense of Rooney or RvP.

Of course the team is capable, but it's still a bizarre decision. He was excellent against Norwich, and he's still one of our three most important and best players. It's not even as if we've replaced him with Kagawa, a specialised number 10.

If he was our heartbeat he'd be starting. In fact forget that, I don't think Rvp is our "heartbeat" either. It's just such an overused and nonsensical statement to overstate someone importance. He's one of our best players, our second best IMO (or possible equal second with a fit vidic) but I don't see how he's THE vital cog. We have many very important cogs.

Think it will be Giggs nominally on the left and Welbeck behind RVP.

Welbeck to loosely man mark Alonso to stop him pinging balls out to Ronaldo and co.

He did it well in the 2nd half at the Bernebeu.

It seems to me that Fergie would rather play someone more suited to the left wing role, ala Welbeck, than shunt Rooney out wide and waste him. A fresh Rooney coming on playing in his best position could be vital.

As soon as the news broke everyone seemed to go mental and just start mashing their heads against their keyboards in a bid to look the most shocked. It's not that surprising and it doesn't mean he's leaving either.

Yup that's what I imagine too as it happened in the 2nd half of the 1st leg. Giggs and Nani are also arguably an upgrade on Rooney and Valencia out wide.

Apparently Colleen Rooney tweeted that she can't believe he isn't starting... so he probably doesn't have a knock.

I agree and we all know he said Giggs would play a part but to start ahead of Rooney? not a chance. Rooney should have started Giggs should be on the bench.

That's true, though it then makes me wonder, why not Kagawa? Maybe because he's just not as defensively good as Welbeck, which in itself worries me.

It has shades of the City line up last season to me, I'm quite worried here.
