Wayne Rooney | 2012-14 Performances

Before the haters get here i'll just say he was fine today. He tried to be creative from a wide area and created a goal. You play your best players in the middle and he is clearly their best. He was good on the ball but couldn't get enough of it. But wait for for the criticism because he didn't do what RVP did without half the service he deserves.

People actually defending Rooney's performance out there? :wenger:

He's been shit but that's partly due to the position he's been played in. For the first 45 minutes he was a left wing back obviously he's going to be fecking useless.

Shunted onto the wing. Hmmm I wonder why, when he's so amazing?

It's crazy, isn't it? He's the only player who can create or score a goal and still get pelted by the fans.

Come off it. He did very well to set up the goal but apart from that him and Gerrard seem to be having a match to see who can put in the most pathetic performance.

Rooney was absolutely horrible. I hope he's not this bad going into next season or he won't even start a game in this form. van Gaal won't play him because he's paid a lot or because he's English. Rooney is really good when he's in form but when he's bad, he's bad.

Lot better than performance put out by Gerrard in midfield. If people call for Rooney to be dropped from this side then there are few others in different positions who should go first.

Very nice cross for the Sturridge goal, had one of his poor days for the rest. Also a weird choice to keep him on the pitch and then not let him take the freekick that suits a right footer which Gerrard took. The only reason you keep him on when he's playing like that is for situations like that freekick.

LvG won't like him because he is so technically inept half the time.

Rooney was poor, but still got that assist. Not sure why Roy played him out of position - I think England might play better without him.

I'm not a Rooney hater(the club was right to keep him IMO) but he was pointless today apart from the assist and failed to even do his job defensively on the left in the first half. There must be some arrangement in the England camp that he never get taken off. He should have been the first player subbed off.

Okay he had a below average game, but he wasn't awful. The way he was utilized by Hodgson was awful, out on the left wing, but he still managed a moment of brilliance to create a goal. My point is, Rooney can have a good game and still get heckled by the fans, it happens most games, not just tonight.

If he was so great as a 10 he would be picked there instead of Sterling, who excelled in that role.

And he wasn't a wing back at all. His constant need to come inside, playing for himself again instead of the team, left Baines constantly exposed in the first half, hence him being switched at half time.

Gonna be made a scapegoat so I have some sympathy but, in all honesty, neither he nor Gerrard deserve to keep their place in the team after that.

Unfortunately for England they don't have many options to replace Gerrard. They have a few to replace Rooney though, he simply doesn't deserve to start the next game.

I'm fairly sure neither he nor Gerrard will be dropped though.

Absolutely disgusted by him. I was raging at him during the game.

He has no interest in the team whatsoever. Nicking the ball off Barkley, not helping Baines (who himself was awful) and just generally demonstrating a complete lack of desire and ability.

He's no longer England's best attacking player. He's no longer undroppable. Yet he stayed out there ahead of Welbeck who had a much better game. No manager ever seems to realise he's the problem.

He's out of form, he's out of shape, and for me, he should be out of the squad. An absolute disgrace.

Shit first half before the assist, was better 2nd half and thought he was coming good, then seemed to want to do it all himself after the miss.

Henry is right, if you aren't going to play him upfront then don't play him. A beautiful cross for the goal, missed several chances when he should at least have hit the target.
6/10

Poor WUM attempt. Try better next time.

Aye he shouldn't have been on the left but he should've been subbed ahead of Welbeck who can run all day. The last point is fair enough but I don't think he's had a good consistent run off form in a fair while now and he'll always be the first to come up for criticism because he's 'the golden boy'. It might not be right but he has to perform to shake the criticism off and I don't think he has it in him.

Played out of position against a superior side and still had an assist. Not as bad as everyone is saying he was but, I think he will do much better against Costa Rica and Uruguay.

Hence 5 minutes after being switched they score from the exact same thing they had done all game? they should have changed it earlier, Rooney spent almost all the first half in a defensive position, he got the ball once or twice in Italy's half.

If your not going to play him upfront or as a #10 then dont fecking play him. But picking him to play left wing (wtf) and then expecting him to drop deep into a wing back position is fecking retarded.

The fact that he has to be shorhorned into the bloody England team just to get a game tells you everything you need to know about Rooney thesedays.

Scholes was right, we've seen the best of him.

I'm done. He was my favorite player for a long time but today i just can't argue against Scholes anymore. He peaked already and we will do the best to sell him.

If we can get good money we must sell him he just don't play as he did 3 years ago anymore.

Very poor performance from Wayne. Welbeck looked good before he was bizarrely taken off though.

I still maintain we should sell Wayne before his value plummets.

I think next season will be his last here.

I hate making incredibly simplistic comments but he really just isn't very good any more. He doesn't link up well with anyone and while clearly he's got talent and he's not a useless footballer, it's becoming harder and harder to justify picking someone who just never turns up in the World Cup and actively seems to hinder the team.

I think we missed our chance to sell him last summer, his stock is already in decline now.

He is undroppable, today is proof. He's not good enough to play no.10 but he has to play. Let's put him on the left, oh no, he looks shite there too. Let's sub him, oh no, we can't. Let's sub Sturridge instead. Bonkers.

Pretty much this. And aren't you one of his most vocal critics? He wasn't awful. He had an okay game, should have done better on the one chance, great assist, but the way people are talking it's like he's had one of his awful games, which just wasn't the case.

Usual reactions, if he doesn't have a blinder, he gets branded as extremely poor and this and that. I thought he did a job, got through a lot of work that if played in position, he wouldn't have had to do.

Thought he had a good game in parts in very tough circumstances. Should find it easier in cooler conditions and not so much defensive work in the next two games.

Sturridge was injured. Rooney should've been subbed instead off Welbeck and Gerrard when Henderson went off. They're certainly undroppable though. I agree with Alastair. He's just not that good anymore.

You really have to doubt understanding of people if they call this performance 'poor.' Not great by any stretch of imagination obviously but he was not helped by the position he was playing. In first half, apart from cross he didn't see much of the ball but that's because Welbz, Sturridge and Sterling were playing between themselves mostly and attacks were coming from other side than Rooney's. Not to mention he was helping in tracking back. 2nd half, more than Rooney, the change in formation and heat affected team mostly. Welbeck should have been left longer on pitch because to his energy and behind Rooney to create chances.

It's really mind boggling. Does he not realise he's being played at various positions because of his awful performances? It's ridiculous how many players are being sacrificed at his expense.

England fans, this is how some (most?) United fans felt after the game at Munich last season.

Not a fan of his at all but the criticism seems to be overboard right now. Good in the first half, great cross for the goal, made things work for you lot and then faded just like anybody else bar Sterling ( who probably was a MOTM from the English side ) and he's getting some serious stick here.

Not to mention that he was thrown around from #10, to left wing and then at last to #9.

The undroppable argument, fair enough, same happened here this season but he was far from being abysmal as some try to picture it.

Sums it up quite well
