He's played as the only striker twice this season, hasn't he? He's got 4 goals in those 170 mins.

Very good all round performance. His touch and overall play is generally a lot better as a striker IMO. As a 10 he'll have plenty of games where he's just off the pace, maybe being overburdened by needing to do the midfield job, creating and scoring. As a striker he knows his job and he does it excellently.

Even better than the goals is the fact that he really does linkup very well with both Mata and Kagawa. I think we're going to see some very good play now

Spectacular goal and even Becks couldn't help but admire the similarities!

He is going to be crucial against bayern. Need him at his best or we don't stand a chance.

He's played as a centre-forward a few times, against Bayer Leverkusen, Tottenham, Everton, and West Ham. He's looked great in three of those games IMO. He's simply much better playing as a #9.

'Scores a lot, but his all round play leaves something to be desired . . . '.

'Good all around player, but doesn't score enough goals for my liking . . . '.

Both common arguments throughout his career to date.

Play him further forward > he will score.

Play him further back > he will still score at a lesser rate, but will also create loads as well.

The stats bare this out.

Wayne Rooney is a top player, as his CV is a testament to.

Kind of a shame our next game is against City. Doubtful that Moyes will go with Rooney, Mata and Kagawa in the lineup.
I think Mata and Rooney are definitely going to start as they came off early. Kagawa is a 50-50

It's because he doesn't have to be the creative influence and can better use his strength, power and finishing when he plays up top, we have better technical players like Mata and Kagawa to do the intricate stuff in the hole.

Agreed. The role minimizes the bad parts in his game and emphasizes the good parts.

Hopefully he'll get games in the #9 as Robin probably won't be coming back any time soon from that fecking injury. The difference we see in playing through the middle, moving the ball, not crossing it 24/7 and so on, it's not down to Rooney being the #9 but down to a real CAM that is playing at the #10, one that can make-the-play far better than Roo.

Wondergoal today and he's done his job brilliantly I feel. A tad unlucky not to have scored 3.

IMO so much better as no.9. When he plays just behind the striker he is too focussed on spraying the ball wide.

Genuine world class centre forward, looking forward to seeing his and Mata's partnership develop

I think Mata is better number 10 and that we create much more when Rooney isn't playing there, so I am happy with Rooney up top, but we need quick wingers in that case.

Pleasantly surprised at his performance today. The movement really helped him. Linked well with Mata and Kagawa even though somehow Ashley Young sort of sets up two goals. Ridiculous

Fantastic goal, 3rd in all time scorers list now. Hopefully by end of next season he will be all time topper :)

From Twitter.

Earned his wage tonight. Can't really ask for more than that can we?

You do know his best season for us was as a no9 right?

What season was that? I would guess it was 5-4 years ago when he still had that burst of explosiveness in his game. Which those aspect are non-existant at the moment. In the 2011/2012 season from most recent memory, he had a great season but partnered Welbeck the majority of it.

Great goal. It was one of the few triumphant moments I can remember, possibly since RVP versus Villa?

Hopefully he's finally got all the lobs out of his system now he's put one in the net. Years and years of failed lobs.

He had a fine game overall. It was great to see him in his best position, and how we didn't rely on him to make things happen in the middle of the pitch, with Kagawa and Mata looking very capable.

Thought he led the line really well and brought in others well, particularly in the first half nicely. If he and Mata can both play as they did over the remaining league games it will cause a bit of a dilemma. I used to think, particularly when we were linked with Sneijder that Rooney just had to much as a number 10 but more and more I think his ability as the lead striker has overtaken what he had as a number 10. He can play it very well but Mata just for me can offer a little bit more (though does need to get some goals).

His first goal was amazing. The GK was all over the place but don't think it'd have made much difference. Think it was definitely harder that Becks was, though Beck's was probably more outrageous given his age, we've seen Rooney try this sort of thing before, still was a great effort. Ahead of the City game, however unlikely we are to get much out of it given our showings in the big games, Rooney in good form is a big bonus going in to it.

He's just so good at leading the line, especially away from home. He occupies defenders as he battles them and roughs them up. He wins a hell of a lot of headers for someone his size and gets in the box more.

All time goals:
1. Charlton 249
2. Law 237
3. Rooney 212

League goals:
1. Charlton 199
2. Rowley 182
3. Law 171
4. Viollet 159
5. Spence 158
6. Rooney 154

I think I posted that he will break the record in May 2015.

This performance is for people who think he's not good enough to play as our only striker. And the interchanging with Mata and Kagawa has been very good.
Oh and that sort of goal is why we bent over backwards to keep him at this club. Outright 3rd highest scorer in the history of the club as well.

Eh? A lot of people have been asking for him to battle with RVP for a lone striker spot, while a proper no 10.... feck it, I can't be arsed anymore

Wasn't there talk of how he doesn't score those explosive goals anymore like he used to when he was young? Rooney has had a number of long distance beauties in the last few seasons

Since City were taken over and became meaningful opposition, Wayne Rooney has started 13 games against them and scored 9 goals. He quite likes playing them...

His shooting technique from outside has been incredibly inconsistent for a couple of years now. Re centre-forward role: as @Sixpence said, when he playss in his best position, we get the best out of him. I don't believe he should be playing as a #10 from now until the end of the season. He's had some great games in this position with Fergie, but I don't personally believe he possesses the intelligence of a Mata/Kagawa. I remember the game against Stoke at home earlier this season, where he switched the ball, when we had a 3 v 2 advantage down their right. Or being so fixed to playing passes down the wing, that he didn't look up down the middle to see his partner (Welbeck against Everton for example). However, I don't understand the constant criticism of him playing long balls. Both games against Aston Villa last year, his passes were excellent at isolating our wingers with their full backs (his pass to Valencia started the move for our first goal at home in the 12/13 season). Ultimately though, for now, Moyes has to keep him as a centre-forward. He's been excellent as a centre-forward in every game (bar Everton) this season IMO.

It's because he is incosistent with them, in one game he pings them like Scholes, and in next five most of his long balls end up in opposition defender's legs or head, even though crowd for some reason applauds on halfway only to realise it won't reach it's target.

I think that's a bit harsh, he had an excellent game and if you want to be super critical then that's one moment you could criticise.

For example if you want to nit pick here's a moment each in the game on Sunday where you could say Kagawa and Mata could have played a ball through the middle instead of playing the ball wide.

00:28, Kagawa had a chance to play a first time through ball and even had a chance after hit touch but chose to play the ball out wider to Mata.

1.28, Mata chose to play the ball out wide to Ashley Young when Rooney was making a run through the middle and could have been clean through.

That's being super critical though like I think most people have been with Rooney for a while now.

I am one of his biggest critics, but he wasn't bad at all. Could have been bit better in the first half with some moves, but he couldn't do much more overall.

He's been poor.

He was the best player of our team again today. He is just being let down by no tactics and no game plan what so ever just like all our players. They probably only practice how to run in training. Imagine him in any of the top 4 clubs and he would be one of the most dangerous players.
