wut

It wasnt half a Messi

In fact his very good performance was at the level I'd have expected him to play at 2 contracts ago

Agree about that. It was a really good performance, his best since Hull away. Let's not exaggerate though. His involvment in the goals was a bit lucky. He didn't controll well the ball from Giggs' pass and could assist for the second goal only because the ball came back to him. And the third goal came after a bad mistake: first from the defender who made the foul and then from the keeper. The run preceding the foul was great though. It was an encouraging performance, let's hope now that it will be followed by even better performances in the next CL games. The opposition is going to be much better than Olympiakos.

Good performances or bad, can we just let go off the whole salary aspect? Why does it need to be brought up every time he has a good/bad performance? Let it go!

He was very good. Aside from the attacking which he did well he made 5 tackles, more than anyone else on the pitch. His role was important dropping back and helping the midfield and he did it.

None of this is any different to a good performance a couple of years ago though. A 300k performance would be expected to win this kind of tie alone like Messi or Ronaldo have. I dont know why fans are mentioning the money in a positive light. Best to commend him on a very good performance and not mention it, because if he put in anything less than last night's performance it would have been a shocker for that kind of money.

very true

Just so we're clear on this. Is his salary going to be brought up after every game for the duration of his contract?

Maybe a mod could change the title of every thread about a player to include a prompt along the lines of "Reminder: This Player is Being Paid xk/week".

Would save people a lot of typing over the years.

I'm not sure it ever existed, tbh, but he looks to have his hunger back.
Different kind of attachment I guess. You can work for a company and really like it, its ethos, what it stands for, and have some love for it. I think he actually does love Utd like that. There'll never be the same kind of passion that Scholes or Giggs had though, or maybe Welbeck. I think he's happy here at the moment in any case, which is the most important.

Great performance by him last night, he's been very good on quite a consistent basis in Europe anyway so I trust him most of the time to be good.

Aye, I mean just look at this at the final whistle last night...

Outpouring of emotion, so fecking sexy
the ogre within...

I get the feeling the deep love of the club from him is back......

agree with brophs on this. rooney is a winner. his celebration at full-time was a sense of relief in my eyes after so many poor results and performances. not sure how it's connected with his love for united. when he's focused, he's a great professional.

agreed. it's very tiresome. not our money and nothing we can do about it. comes across as bitter. granted i wasnt over the moon seeing as how those contract talks played out but he's here and he's our player. got to come to grips with it at some point

Welbeck was my man of the match last night, was at Old Trafford and his support defensively, his awareness and general play was outstanding, he offers a lot to the team being able to play in various positions.

Rooney had a great game too, his vision was exceptional to create a few of those chances, but I think Welbeck was the standout performer, with Jones at the back too did superb he was a rock at the back.

A goal you will be seeing in highlight videos of Rooney's career for the next 100 years and Aliens are running the FA.

He doesn't half score some fecking outrageous goals.

Newcastle is still my favourite though... and that's saying something!

Seeing him play in his best position is so good and it's bringing back memories of 09-10. He is a lone striker.

Reminds me of his performance in 10/11 against West Ham. So much better as a centre-forward.

Some goal, but I am more pleased with his all-around game, finally I can't criticise him.

Much better as a striker and Mata's much better than him as a number 10.

Hopefully Moyes see's this and we stick with for the rest of the season.

Much like Kagawa and Mata, it's not about where he stands when the whistle blows, it's about the style of play.

This performance is for people who think he's not good enough to play as our only striker. And the interchanging with Mata and Kagawa has been very good.
Oh and that sort of goal is why we bent over backwards to keep him at this club. Outright 3rd highest scorer in the history of the club as well.

Making up your own arguments again then? The vast majority of debate has been about Rooney the No 10 and Rooney the midfielder, not Rooney the No 9.

I still do not rate him as a no.9. His all round attribute is underutilized and he does not have the pace or hold up play to be truly potent in this role. His positioning and movement has been amazing though. I would rather see him as a false no.9 in a 4-3-3 or a second striker in a 4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1 in order to get the best out of his ability.

Three of his last four goals have been stunning half-volleys, today the best of the lot.

On his day, he is literally one of the best strikers in the world - and I say 'literally', because by 'striker' I mean someone who can 'strike' the ball with such power and precision that it is very hard to stop.

It was a very fine goal he scored today of that is there no doubt, however it is by no means unreasonable for people to expect a far greater consistency in performance than we typically see from Rooney.

Always said he was better as a striker. Obviously 1 game doesn't prove everything, but the 2 seasons he was our main goalscorer and main outlet up front, he scored 34 goals both seasons. Not bad really. He's suffered because of his versatility and Fergie wanting to use him from further back. Should have just made him a #9 from the start.

I agree. I was delighted when we signed Kags because I thought we were finally getting the #10 let Rooney flourish to his absolute peak in the #9 position.

You do know his best season for us was as a no9 right?

Not that great as a number 9, but very good as a number 10 . . .

A crap number 10, but very good at leading the line . . .

Both opinions which you seem to hear with regularity.

And for me, what they actually do is demonstrate the talent of Wayne Rooney.

In that he is one of a few players in the world who can play as both a 9 and 10 to a very good standard.

He is 2 Players - perhaps 3, given he can 'do a job' in midfield as well - for the price of one.

Excellent tonight.

His best position is as a striker and has been for a couple of years now. Our midfield passed the ball through the centre as a result of his positioning and he still had chances. He's our best finisher and, yes, finished from the rebound like he often does. So obvious.
