Wayne Rooney | 2012-14 Performances

I thought he was poor too. I do think even when he's not performing well though, that in a game as big as that he'll help give the others confidence anyway, just by being in the team.

Exactly, but that should never excuse performances like this. Rooney's always going to create chances for us (pass to Welbeck for his chance and assist to Vidic's goal), but he could have done more with the ball. Not in the sense that he should be taking players on, make more penetrative passes, etc., but his ball retention skills should be better.

He was sweating buckets twenty minutes into the game. He played for the team, as always.

Rooney is slowly winning me back over, I'm a little ashamed to admit.

Worst dive ever?

Nah, Gamst-Pedersen still has the worst dive ever. Close though :)

I thought he was poor today. Expected a bit more from him. He did, however, provide a beautiful corner to Vidic's head. He's been consistently good/very good at set pieces this year. He has a good amount of goals+assists from set pieces this season.

It's almost annoying, isn't it. Even when he plays poorly, he provides an assist or a goal. He's much better as a striker though. When he plays in the number ten position and is rubbish, it affects the whole team. When he plays as a striker, the build-up doesn't suffer as much, and he will still probably get the goal or assist...

Initial rumours are that it could keep him out of the WC too...

So, Fellaini up top?

Should be confirmed shortly but looks like Rooney is injured.

Out of Bayern game.
Not sure if it's true seeing as the only twitter account that posted that is Manutdstuff, who just write whatever they hear usually. Not sure why they would embargo the news either so I doubt it's that.

If it is though... Rooney injured for the second leg against Bayern yet again :(

It's standard to embargo written part of press conference - nothing to do with specifics.

You'll see come 10:30pm but he's out.

Anyone know how long?

We were woeful the last time we had both RVP and Rooney out.

Mata behind Welbeck then at the weekend?

Mata behind Hernandez. Welbeck needs rest for the game vs Bayern.

Personally I think it would serve us better to play Welbeck against Newcastle hopefully let him grab a goal or two and some confidence against a side who've been terrible recently and on the beach since January and take that into the Bayern game.

Players aren't automatically better from being rested, especially strikers tend to do better with a run of games.

Hopefully just "injured" for the Newcastle game and will magically recover for the Bayern game! One can hope..

True, but Welbeck ran himself into the ground last game and being told he's being rested for the Bayern game tells him he's a key player and is a confidence boost in itself.

Welbeck isn't stupid, he knows RVP and Rooney are injured.

Players like Welbeck need that rest to be fit for a game in 2, 3 days. Welbeck use too much strength in his game. He is a player that rely on Pace and Power therefore in a game he is likely to get spent more than the rest of his teammates.

When one does lots of running and use too much strength, spending much energy, it is important they get that needed rest in order to perform at 100%. I'd rest him for the Bayern game

And what did Jones do to Rooney this time?:nono:

Yeah how are people so sure about this? I've seen one tweet about it.

"It is a toe injury and they are never easy when you get one,” said Moyes. “You could see him limping in the game towards the end quite badly.

“There is not an awful lot you can do with a toe injury. Sometimes you can feel better quite quickly with them and sometimes you need an injection possibly to play with it if it is bruising. With a lot of toe injuries you have to make sure there isn’t a hairline fracture or crack in your toe. We will have all that checked.

“It’s football. You look at what Wayne has done for us in the last league games for instance. Against Aston Villa he scored two goals. There was a couple at West Ham including that special goal. My focus is Newcastle and making sure we get a result there. Wayne has been an integral part of that because of the goals he scores for us. He is a miss for that never mind going forward.”

Toe injury then, I don't think it's mind games here, he also says Welbeck will play. How long does this keep him out for?

Possible bait and switch here? sounds like hes unsure when in actual fact if Rooney came limping off the first thing they would do is scan it. Makes a good excuse not to play him tomorrow, no one gets upset cos hes "injured" comes back v Bayern.

I'm not sure they would, toe is not something you can do anything about if it's fecked!

Alot of my United friends immediate reaction is its an obvious mind game, since injury news is never embargoed. Does seem strange why embargo news of an injury.

I believe the presser for the written press is embargoed.

"May be doubtful."

Tautology right there. He'll be fit - United are just looking for a reason to rest him without a fall-out if you lose tomorrow. No big deal.

They're lying. He's done that old metatarsal again hasn't he? He's going to get booed by England fans because he'll be shit after a rushed comeback.

We don't really know how serious it is since Moyes doesn't really say much TBH. I wouldn't be surprised if he does play against Bayern. I'm pretty sure he wasn't going to play against Newcastle anyway, maybe Moyes is trying to keep Bayern guessing.

I remember we had a corner, I think before Chicharito came on, in which he was standing outside the box and it looked as if he were limping.

But why would they need an excuse to rest their best player in a dead rubber right before the toughest game of the season?
