Should have been subbed off. If he is this bad against fulham, he should be subbed off and kept off until he realises he doesnt have a divine right to start every game.

Does he not though? That is my point.

Rooney and Kagawa had zero chemistry tonight, mind, that was mostly because Rooney was truly awful. I just wonder if they clash a little because they occupy similar spaces on the pitch.

On this form Rooney would have zero chemistry with his usual hookers.

That header at the end of the first half is still getting to me. Hernandez heads that in guaranteed. Honestly unless Rooney markedly improves this weekend what the hell is he giving us that our other forwards don't? Kagawa can play the number 10 role just as well if not better, Van Persie has his goalscoring ability and can take a mean set piece, Chicharito is as good in the air and right now Rooney's first touch and control don't look significantly better than Javier's. So unless Rooney comes back into some sort of form again what's he contributing?

I'm sorry for all the wishful thinking Rooney isn't Ronaldo. He isn't the kind of player that other team's fear because of the name on the back of his shirt. They know that if Rooney is having an awful game 9 times out of 10 he isn't going to turn it around he's going to go on having an awful game instead of smash one in from 30 yards as Ronnie can. Rooney has slowly become one of those players who when United play good he's great but when we play rubbish he's even worse. Its a shame because he used to be the catalyst for us, the man who would make it happen if it was all falling down around his ears. I think back to the 2-4 at Upton Park on the way to the 2010/11 title and wonder what the hell happened to that Rooney. The Rooney who turned up to Wembley vs Barca. The Rooney who some people used to argue was the best big game player in England.

He used to be the key ingredient now he's just the cherry on top. A sunshine player who caps off good team performances but does almost nothing to lift dire ones.

You mean like last season?

I agree with you, any other player bar king eric would never be played when so woefull, it baffles me.

Even in that dry spell at the start of the 96/97 season Cantona was never so woeful anyway.

When? As I said I can't remember Rooney having a great 90 minutes since January 1st 2012. He's had two great 45 minutes away at Wolves and Chelsea but besides that I can't remember a stand out performance since this year begun.

The whole needing games to find form is a half truth, he is in a comfort zone, knowing no matter how badly he plays that old chestnut will be trotted out and he will start the next game.

Exactly.

Lets face it since he held United over his knee and spanked them like something out of 50 shades of Grey over his contract terms Rooney knows he's been untouchable. He'll never be dropped, he'll never be held to account for his drop in form.

If Hernandez or Welbeck scored 20 odd tap ins and a bunch of penalties people would still complain about their first touch and what have you. But Rooney...a few goals wipes away the fact that for at least 6 months he's been getting by on the back of other peoples effort and contributing less and less to United's team play.

I honestly don't know what the problem is:

* Merely a sustained lack of form?
* A complacent attitude?
* A fading interest in the game?
* And on a minor note: worries about getting injured?

He only just recently came out and said every game is as exciting as his debut or something like that.

Being dominated by Spurs - Rooney scores header and puts us 1-0 up before the break.

2 goals vs Liverpool and we win 2-0, previous games against Liverpool in the season without Rooney didn't end up with positive results IIRC.

2 goals vs Man City in FA Cup - passes ball out wide to Valencia, charges towards goal and heads the ball in which crashes underneath the crossbar and in, nudges out Nani to score.

Goal in 1-0 win over Sunderland final day of the season in a pressure match, where unfortunately other results didn't go our way.

2 goals vs Chelsea albeit penalties, his performance was excellent and he was instrumental in us coming back to 3-3.

May not have been a great performance but strangely enough 2-0 United vs West Brom and it's Rooney who's made sure we've won the game with his two goals.

1st game of the season against West Brom and Rooney scores with his left foot, wasn't exactly a great United performance but once again it's Rooney who influences the game.

He also somehow manages to score 3 goals in 2 games against Bilbao despite us being outplayed, one being a superb individual goal.

I don't think that will be true this season with Van Persie. Rooney is going to have to step up this season and earn it.

Im hoping so, kagawa is equally as creative, rvp is equally as deadly.......the time is right for boots to be applied to asses.

He said performances, not goals. We all know he scores a lot of goals. From games you singled out, you can count one half against chelsea as great performance, others were nothing more than solid.

Kagawa's today's debut game in Premier league was probably better performance than any of those Rooney's games, and Kagawa looked like playing with 11 retards.

I'm wondering if SAF didn't sign RVP to complement Rooney (as per the received wisdom)...

In none of those games was Rooney excellent over the course of 90 minutes. He had an exceptionally good half against Chelsea which I've already mentioned, I agree in the F.A. Cup tie against City he started like a house on fire but even with 10 men they almost came back at us. Yes he has scored some crucial goals I'll give you that but I'd argue we have other forwards just as capable of finishing those chances besides the 1st against West Brom last season but I said since January 1st 2012 anyway and as I recall that game was in 2011.

At no point has Rooney stamped his authority on a full 90 minutes for a long, long time. The last time I remember Rooney really running a game was in 2010 before he did his ankle. He shows glimpses of his true ability in bursts maybe for 30-45 minutes at a time but then retreats and returns to playing within himself. If today we had the same Wayne Rooney who destroyed Milan in the 2009/10 Champions League we'd have crushed Everton. That Wayne Rooney, the Rooney who was player of the year, could and did carry United on his back single handedly. This Wayne Rooney looks so lethargic he looks like he literally needs carrying...

Maybe he senses Rooney's persistent inability (well from afar) to knuckle down and stay disciplined off the pitch (referring to post-season antics here) as well as the chance he might not be as motivated as he was as a young pup, could well result in a downturn in form from Rooney. Not a little one either but a prolonged slump. The RVP signing as well as the Kagawa one will motivate him and keep him on his toes (think about the whole 'Big money signings' spiel from Rooney too). His seat isn't as comfy as it once was and I think on the whole United fans have never really taken him back fully with open arms.

Good post, AC. Regardless of how some feel about Rooney, he's not exactly helped himself.

There will be plenty of games where we only have one striker up front. We'll know then whether it's business as usual or Rooney is having to earn starts.

Rooney's ability has never been in question for me, his mentality has always been a question mark for me. How can a player who can score goals like the one he scored against City play so shit around that goal? It still doesn't make sense to me. I really think SAF hoped that as he matured Rooney would become the talisman of the team a la Cantona, never really worked out that way. I've heard stories about how much time the likes of Cantona and Ronaldo have put into training, never heard that about Rooney. For me he's never fulfilled the vast talent he's got, he really can do anything on a Football pitch, however he still has had a superb career here and he can still do great things in a United.

Sometimes it's so obvious Rooney is off his game and usually it's for weeks. I don't understand why he's not pulled off...

It might be for him, certainly not for us! He used to be a special player, regularly doing special things.

Seems a long time ago since that overhead kick, and not much sign that he is getting anywhere near the type of player he was meant to become. He is supposed to be our game changer, someone who we can look to to provide that spark of genius that makes the difference.

He still scores goals, but i just don't see anything that special about his play anymore.

He doesn't complement Rooney so there you go...

Rooney seems to spend the off season drinking beer and eating curries and chips, getting fit around about October.

I hope you aren't expecting RvP to put a rocket up Rooney's arse. He's made his last big money move and expects to play and get plenty of service...he's not expecting to have to compete with Rooney or play second fiddle to him.

Damn right too.

He definitely likes the old school style of football. If he were playing 25 years ago he would be having some pints after the game.
