Wayne Rooney | 2012-14 Performances

He doesn't deserve a place in the team when he's like this. Didn't do anything worthwhile considering he's our attacking spear head. Half his first touches were too heavy meaning he had no choice but to tap it back to where it came from with his second touch.

The conundrum here is the only way he'll get better is with game time.

At least he will still have his £220K a week, fecking stupid performance from Wayne. But not surprised, he usually play like this 10 times/season.

Awful at Goodson once again. What a joke of a performance.

His first touch was abysmal today, he looked like he hadn't touched a ball for a year.

I'm sorry but to be held in such high regard and get paid as much as he does, being as shocking as he is after every little break is a joke.

He really had a poor game today. I don't know what's going to be done with him this season. Fergie probably envisioned him playing in behind Van Persie as a second striker, but his overall game hasn't been as impressive as we've seen it for a long time now. Incredibly frustrating on days like this.

Such a strange player. Statistically he is great but he spends long portions of many many games messing things up. I don't think there's another world class player out there who screws up basic things like he does so often. Which other top player has as many elephant touches as him? It's very strange.

Wayne Rooney.

At times in the season, World class. Guarenteed to be shit at Goodison, yet he starts every year. His touch and pace tonight was terrible.

Rooney's "cross" early in the second half that ended up somewhere behind the goal summed up his game. Don't know what's happened to Rooney this calendar year but I genuinely can't remember him having a great 90 minutes since January 1st 2012. There have been halves of games like away at Wolves and Chelsea where he's looked the business but over the course of a full match since the clock struck midnight on New Year's Day he's been average most of the time. For all his talk about being g'd up by us signing Van Persie he was miles off the pace as he has been for months now.

I don't begrudge him starting because, even when he's been in poor form (as he has for literally the past year) he can still score a goal out of nothing.

It's that he's immune from substitution even when he's at his very worst that annoys me. He should have been taken off today, without question. And yet he stayed on, fecking up even the simple things right until the very end.

Everyone has bad days (although recently Rooney has had more than most), but when players are performing terribly in a match they surely have to be replaced?

Never looked like changing the game. I'd drop him come Saturday because that was a poor performance

Atrocious tonight but when has he ever played well at Merseyside? If he plays this way next week I hope we bench him for the game after that but he'll get back in form with games.

He's giving Sir Alex problems that the boss shouldn't have to deal with.

The abuse Rooney receives from fans here is pathetic. His performance wasn't awful at all. If you are to blame any players today, you would be more appropriate in blaming the lazy Evra, the wasteful and rash Nani, or the invisible Cleverley.

Worst performance by Rooney since I can remember. Hopefully he'll realise that van Persie is able to make him fight for his automatic starting place though.

Get over it fanboy.

His performance today was awful, I don't see any other way of describing it really.

Get back into your cave you weird creature!

Rooney shouldn't be un-subable for either united or England but it seems like the odd moments of magic he can produce even when not on form makes him so. It's a tough call but sometimes maybe it.needs to be done.

Many have very high expectations with Rooney, but he's only got himself to blame for that. £220k a week. £220k.

Perform from the start of the season.

He's an easy target because of what he did 2 years back. Everytime he has a 6/10 game, this thread will get bumped. He does deserve criticism for tonight's performance though.

Cleverley was one of our better players tonight.

Good job he's got all those acting skills.

I am not saying Rooney was good. But he does not deserve to be singled out for criticism. It's popular to slate his first touch, sometimes this criticism is relevant, but not tonight. I thought his touch was fine, and his interplay with Kagawa was promising.

Fans always need a scapegoat, though, and Rooney is the new popular choice.

It was more a 3/10 game than a 6. So many simple things he got wrong, and the amount of times he got robbed of possession was criminal.

Didn't you just single out three players for individual criticisms in your last post, encouraging other posters to do the same?

I thought his touch was a bit ropey, but I don't know why anyone is surprised by this

He will always need 3 games to get sharp after a lay-off. You have to play him because he needs the games, there's no other way. He makes up for it and more when he gets going.

This is a Rooney thread genius, of course only Rooney will be talked about in here.
Check out other threads for proof that Rooney isn't singled out.Fanboyism and victim syndrome
