john why don't you go into the Nani thread and have a good moan about why he's also being singled out for deserved criticism?

Rooney was terrible today, absolutely horrible and I normally am the one defending him. Hopefully he turns it on from now. Who are we playing next?

What annoys me most is that I know that he won't be dropped. If that was another player he would sit on the bench next week.
feck that. Play rvp up front with kagawa behind him and let rooney on the bench until he gets his shit together

I wonder if having RVP will mean more time on the Bench for Roo? After this match I bloody well hope so.

I would love to see RvP-Welbeck on saturday. Wayne needs a wake up call, he's one of my favourite players but at the moment he's just not better than our other strikers.

Wayne’s a stocky lad. If he misses a couple of games, it takes him three or four to come back

To be fair, Rooney isn't going to get his shit together by being benched, he does need to play. However, when he is really poor, like Nani tonight he needs to be benched, there's no benefit by keeping him on late in the game when he is so ineffective.

The thing was, he just looks so clunky and clumbsy when on the ball. You feel like he'll trip on his feet at any point and struggle to actually take it past a defender at all. Years back he could breeze past opposition players with his eyes shut.

It's infuriating he can't seem to get his act together in training and needs actual game time. So we have no choice but to willingly accommodate a woefully out of form player just to give him match practice.

The fact that he knows he can fatten himself up all summer and gradually coast his way to fitness every year, without the risk of losing his place in the starting line up for it, probably doesn't help.

I actually think there's a difference between Shit Rooney and the Rooney we saw tonight.

I'm not one of his fans but I think we'll see a performance in his next game.

Thats no news to me. It's why he won't be benched. But he doesnt help us with that. It's.so fecking frustrating waiting. for him to.come good after breaks

What's the solution then? Keep starting him ahead of 3 potentially better (at the monent) strikers? Based on today there's absolutely no reason to start Rooney ahead of RvP, who needs some game time himself both to get in form and to get used to the team.

The thing that strikes me about Rooney - and this has been mentioned and discussed before - is that he seems to have lost some of his fire. If he had played a game like this 3 years ago you can be damn sure he would've been charging around like a madman and risk getting sent off in the process. Now, I don't mind that he manages to keep a cool head these days, but I wouldn't mind getting some of that determination back. At times it looked like he couldn't care less when he lost the ball which is frankly quite uncharacteristic and a bit worrying, I think. He should not be an automatic starter this season like he's been in the past and hopefully this increased pressure will bring him back to his old level.

I am aware that this is an awful lot when we've just played one match this season, but this is pretty much the same Rooney I saw for large parts of last season.

Totally agree

He needs to realise his place isn't guaranteed. One or two sub appearances and you'll see the hunger back in him.

It's hunger that's the problem. :D

He was lost out there.

Saw him pop up the right in the first half. He was all over the place.

I'm not sure if it's just the dynamism that he's lost, but 2-3-4 yards of pace. He's developed his vision and has a great football brain, but I can't get over the feeling that I actually think he's slow now. During the summers he needs to have fitness sessions..

Not sure what point you're trying to make, but he's always been like that. Roaming around is part of his game. If anything, he's staying more on top now than he used to.

my thoughts exactly

How he is constantly finishing 90 minutes with this kind of performances in last two-three years is beyond me. Terrible performance, I hope Kagawa will take his place in next game.

It's true that you'd normaly expect a player to be benched, and it really was a bad showing from him, but he needs to get back in gear, and as mentioned above he won't get there by sitting on the bench.
Maybe this is just the optimism in me talking but I expect us to be a lot more dangerous up front next game.

I know he needs couple of games to be at his best, but even at his best he is very incosistent. We already have couple of excellent players to replace Rooney, we have Kagawa and Persie now, so who cares about Rooney. If droping Rooney means playing better, than drop him, who cares about him. 90% of people here would drop Nani after one shitty performance, but would tolerate awfull Rooney for half of season.

Rooney and Kagawa had zero chemistry tonight, mind, that was mostly because Rooney was truly awful. I just wonder if they clash a little because they occupy similar spaces on the pitch.

I know we all wanted him to grow up, but in finding new maturity, he has lost his 'fire'? He seems reluctant to get stuck in now.

He was quite bad tonight.

His first touch is really poor and is always mis-controlling the ball.

I'll start off by saying I think Rooney is a top class football, but I've always wondered why he is untouchable even still when he's on such a poor form. Sure, you could argue that even on an off day Rooney could turn it on in seconds, when does that ever happen? The player replacing Rooney could he too do that, would teach him a lesson as well. For all the competition we have for attacking positions, I sure hope Rooney isn't sitting safe. Seeing a Welbeck-RvP combo scoring freely from the bench would be a right kick in his teeth. Sorry, I'm still fuming at his display tonight.

Should have been subbed off. If he is this bad against fulham, he should be subbed off and kept off until he realises he doesnt have a divine right to start every game.
