Wayne Rooney | 2012-14 Performances

United have a better number 9 in Van Persie and a better number 10 in Mata. Assuming Van Persie will finish his career here, Rooney should be used as back up to both, or as one of the advanced midfielder against weaker opposition.

I agree with this. I also think that a lot of the rumors persisting around RVP are untrue. It would seem weird for him to go back to Arsenal at this stage in his career. They will not win anything this season either, and RVP will see that. Next season, I expect, as will he, that United are title challengers once more.

Rooney could be sold for all I care.

The reason Rooney is so highly rated is because he still finishes with blistering stats in a poor team. You throw Rooney into the Chelsea team as striker and watch them dominate the league.

He's probably been our best player this season. I'll excuse him for a couple of below par performances considering how shite everyone else has consistently been.

One thing that annoys me about the criticism Rooney gets is regarding his pinging passes to the wings. People slate it, yet I saw no one complaining when Scholes was doing it for fun.

The only difference is when Scholes was doing it our wingers were doing an excellent job. Not so much now unfortunately. He's brilliant at those passes but I wish he'd stop doing it as Valencia is fecking garbage.

What nonsense.

Rooney should always start for us when fit.

If it came to a straight choice between Rooney or rvp, I'd pick Rooney to be honest. Love van Persie and all, but Rooney has done so much for us for the best part of the last 10 years, is on his way to become our leading all time top scorer and can be our future captain, as well as still being a world class player.
I just don't think Rooney should play as a 10 though, that's should undoubtedly be mata, and since both him and rvp can only play up front, I'm not sure they should start together in the big games. Both are perfectly capable for the majority of games though.

They're equally good strikers but Rooney has more years to offer us than RvP. I'd definitely choose him if you had to choose one.

I find it hard to criticise any individual player this year. The entire club has been a complete disaster zone since the new year, even the players who starred previously like Jones, Rooney, Welbeck, Evans and Januzaj have been a bit crap.

If true, thats excellent news. Will provide a big lift to the rest of the team and it honestly does help bring other players to the club. He's proven this season he still is one of our best players and would be missed.

If he has signed a new deal, I wonder what perks he gets such as knowing transfer activity etc

Can't get into their poxy website without paying but you'd assume it is true. It's great news indeed as it was always going to be vital that we hang on to our best players during this period.

You would think, if its true, then hes been promised some big things about the summer and the signings we will be making to improve the squad, surely?

Surely such promises aren't even needed at this stage? Everyone and their dog knows we're going to be making signings in the summer.

Unless deals are in place (unlikely) then I doubt we could make any such guarantees

It would be a sign of intent (along with the Mata signing) which indicates we wont go quietly into the night. He's also quite a good player, obviously.

Crazy money but if true, I couldn't be more happy. We need to keep our best players it will help both on and off the pitch. It's so important to keep Rooney.

It's the Sun...

Decent chance it turns out true as it's already been reported it's close, but I very much doubt Charlie Wyett would be the first to receive this news.

I hate this phrase so much.

I'm sure Bayern will be quaking in their Champions League winning boots at the news the 7th best team in England managed not to lose one of their better players.

No but it might convince Kroos that coming here might not be a massive step down ;)

If he signs a new contract....then i really believe we're making 3-4 top transfers in the summer

I really doubt Rooney would stay at Old Trafford if he can play Champions League football next season and can have a very nice contract at Stamford Bridge

Rooney loves money......but i think he wants a couple of PL medals and another CL win...........i think he would go in the summer if he would know that we're a sinking ship

Captains armband, stupid wages, being promised he wont have to play in midfield and some expensive players to come in the summer (that hes told wont take his spot) its about the best we can offer bending over backwards for him and could very well be the reason he signs a new contract.

Would be great news if he has signed a new contract. Though I'll wait for it to appear on the official site before getting to excited.

We need Wayne Rooney, plain and simple. He has been our best player this season and obviously shown enough care about putting in performances and moving upwards. Him staying and 3 or so big signings can really get us back in the mix next season.

Fantastic news about the contract if it is true.

The only problem with Sun+ is nobody knows what it says because honestly who the feck would pay read The Sun online?

The guy who broke the story is on the Sunday Supplement and he's talking about it next.

This confirmed yet? I've stopped caring about the money, its the message it would send out if he went to someone like chelsea, give him what he wants.

Absolutely devastated and aghast at this news... the cocknose does what he wants at United.

The message would be that we dont need Rooney. Which is healthier than we do need Rooney, we need him so much he can do whatever he wants every few years and get a new contract. But if hes going to sign a piece of paper and promise he's staying, he'll score lots of goals here no matter what message it sends out.

Apparently Sky News have started running the story, there is nothing on the website but according to my beloved mother she saw something about it not long ago this morning. I am now watching sky news to see what they say.

Just seen it now on Sky and I quote, "Sky sports understands that Wayne Rooney has signed a deal with Manchester united worth £300,000 per week and there is speculation he will also be made captain"

lol, sky sports understands...They say they are just waiting official confirmation from the club.

£300 grand a week, the captains armband, inside info into transfers and first in the queue at lunch (dependant on whether Anderson returns obviously).

I want Wayne's agent to negotiate my next contract. The mans played a blinder.
