I was there One of my favourite days ever. Complete madness.
What was that sound just before Rooney hit the ball?
Somebody whistled right as it got crossed in, such a distinct whistle tooWhat was that sound just before Rooney hit the ball?
One thing that annoys me about the criticism Rooney gets is regarding his pinging passes to the wings. People slate it, yet I saw no one complaining when Scholes was doing it for fun.
Made a quick comp. All of Rooney's 19 assists this season (no replays):

Because Scholes would be in his own half starting the attack and would move the ball wherever the opponents are weakest at that point. Rooney does it from the opponent's half when we're already camped outside their box and he only does it out on to the right wing. Never ever the left. This would be great if we had Messi on the right wing. We have Valencia
Scholes was always deeper and facing the correct way for a pass. Rooney comes deep and takes forever to trap the ball and turn on it. He hasn't made his mind up by then so the defence can face up the wingers with time to spare
There are plenty of GIFs from this season which show him producing some absolute gems to Valencia, despite this supposedly "slow time to turn". I believe it was against Villa in which he produced a Scholes-like performance in terms of passing.
Thanks.Nice one mate good job.
He's not been great in 2014, but he's been played out of position (central midfield in every game bar the Arsenal game) and played with an injury against Tottenham to be fair to him. I really hope he has an excellent second half to match his excellent first half of the season. Re ping the ball wide argument: I think it's a poor argument and I agree with you. This season especially, I think it's definitely to do with how we play. Some class football in that comp. Makes a lie of this idea that all Rooney can do is ping the ball out wide.
Also a painful reminded of how much his form has dipped since that injury.

Too much sense for this thread.Thanks.

People argued that this was perhaps Rooney's best season up until Christmas. Compare his performances with that of Suarez, Ronaldo, Messi and even Aguero and still argue that he is in that very top bracket. Imo, there is quite a gap between him and that class.
Admittedly, I think his performances in the autumn were a little overrated. Sure, he has the stats to back him up, but his short passing and close technique were still too inconsistent, and his become increasingly more so. As a striker, he is probably close to world class, if not amongst the very best, but as a number ten I just don't think he is.
United have a better number 9 in Van Persie and a better number 10 in Mata. Assuming Van Persie will finish his career here, Rooney should be used as back up to both, or as one of the advanced midfielder against weaker opposition.
