Everyone misses chances; I can't see how you could argue he wasn't clinical last year.

Because he missed a lot of easy chances... that simple. :) There was too much of this sort of thing for me to say he was in the bracket of being clinical in the way you'd use it to outline a feature in someone's game.

I'm not ripping into him - his season last year was excellent - but he could've easily had 45+ goals given some of the chances that were spurred. The difference between someone like him and Van Nistelrooy is pretty vast in this respect, but the beauty of Van Persie is that he will do brilliant things more frequently than others.

He has been simply magnificent so far this season, not only in the way he has played but in his attitude and conduct considering he didn't get his move in the summer. My hat is off to you mr Rooney, try and keep it up this time though.....

Who are you and what have you done with sparky hughes

Hell yeah! We should definitely have sold Rooney for him...

How things quickly change eh? Transfer season is like a buffet. Brings out the worst in people.

Most people know that Rooney is a very special player. With a big 'if', if his heart is on it. Last season, he fell out with Fergie, and we know who most on here would take side on. So, most of us who couldn't stand his shit attitude would prefer other world class players (Ozil, Mata) instead of him. Those latter two were among the best in the world, so it's not like most didn't appreciate Rooney's talent though.

Is it me, or is his right foot terribly underrated? I haven't bothered to go through this entire thread, but I just can't remember it being brought up.

He might not have the best short-passing, flicks, or vision like other top no.10's out there. But his long-balls, set-pieces, and general delivery, have been absolutely stunning this season. I don't understand why he's not taking every single freekick? He's clearly our best option.

True, his long passes and set pieces are on an other level, he does take all free kicks doesn't he? unless Giggs asks to, insistently Gigg's free kicks have been pretty rubbish lately :nervous:

I might be imagining it but it looks to me like why deliberately hit in-swinging set-pieces. Rooney takes everything on the left to hit it in and a left footer takes them all on the right. Although, like I said, I could just be making that up.

When it comes to the shooting opportunities, RVP took one free kick over Rooney despite it being on the left side and very close to goal. Giggs took one on the right yesterday and even Baines took a free kick on the right over him for England. Considering he has scored 3 free kicks this season, he should be taking them. I don't think he's taken a shooting opportunity free kick for a while.

Rooney should definitely take all shooting free kicks. RvP is just as good at delivery though. It's great that we're such a threat from set pieces these days.

I wonder if Moyes has them working on set pieces. I remember Giggs saying they didn't really work on set pieces with Ferguson.

The thing is, RVP seem to be the better striker, whereas Kagawa seem to be better in the hole, but Rooney seem to be the better player.

Rooney set-pieces insight: David Moyes reveals that Wayne works on his set-pieces every day with Assistant manager Steve Round.

“Technically, they are looking at ways he can do it even better. It’s him. It’s his enthusiasm. He practises – it’s not as if he just says he will do it. He practises it. It’s important and you can see it can make a difference.

From United's Facebook page

Off the top of my head - the number of assists/goals from set pieces he has this season:

Free kick goal vs. Crystal Palace
Free kick goal vs. Manchester City
Free kick goal vs. West Brom

Assist vs. Liverpool (COC)
Assist vs. Stoke
Assist vs. Arsenal
Assist vs. Cardiff
Assist vs. Bayer Leverkusen

The thing is, RVP seem to be the better striker, whereas Kagawa seem to be better in the hole, but Rooney seem to be the better player.

That sums up Rooney to a T. It's the reason people don't always appreciate how brilliant a player he is, because there's no-one who you can fairly compare him to. His ability, like his style of football, transcends positions and roles.

Any United fan that can stand up and question his value to the team, simply baffles me! He Is playing remarkably well at the moment and eadily the first name on the teamsheet.

RVP is a beast for getting the ball and putting it in the net.
Kags is a beast at getting the ball and putting it at the feet of somebody to pop it In the net.

Wayne Rooney can do both! At this stage of his career, I reckon he just wants to enjoy his football. He and his wife are close to home and that has always been important to him. We all know his love of Fifa and I would love to know the teams he has experimented with ha. We know that Kagawa is the kog we require. I am fairly confident that Wayne knows too and his voice will be important for Moyes.

Rooney is not comparible to anybody else in the team because he is our special talent simples

It's fine for people to question his value, but anyone who does so and doesn't recognise that he's comfortably our best and most important player at the moment needs to get their head looked at.

I'm sure Fergie had a reason for not working on set pieces.

Perhaps he thought an hour was spent better doing a passing or shooting drill than crossing from a dead ball situation.

Shur' we'd be lost without him.

Simple little things that he does at the moment are just special. Nearest example I can think of (outside of his attempt at martial arts) is his nutmeg/near pefect shot against ze Germans. Brilliant

We were the best team around from set pieces last season, so I'm not really sure it's about the managerial change.

Don't worry, I also still think he is a barely human arse haired prat who should be released back into the wild the
Minute he is of no more use to us

At the rate of scoring - both career and this season - he could possibly go ahead of Bobby Charlton's 249 by the end of next season. I'm going with May 10th 2015 as the date that Rooney takes the record, assuming he stays.

Great performance. Felt a bit sorry that his incredible crossfield passes constantly led to nothing

He's been shit hot this season. Cracking game again. cnut that he is, we need to tie him up long term.

He's the only that plays with any purpose be it offensively or defensively.

Great performance, he seems to be the only player in the moment capable of doing something out of nothing.

Trying to give a neutral opinion, He'd have been better off leaving. Him in this form at a better team could have seen huge success. Might end up with nothing this season, as he did both times he scored 34 goals for us.
