At first I was absolutely infuriated that he didn't shoot but the keeper had come out and the pass was certainly on.. the problem was that the pass was utterly shocking. He still managed to score earlier in the game and created 8 chances (one being an assist).

Here's Batron's take on it:

Rooney should never have been sent off. What are these so called experts on about. It was a yellow at most. Ref got it right. 1-0

Three points:

1. Barton's an idiot.
2. The game is too soft and protective these days.
3. It was still probably a red. You can't just kick people.

Tyler's a twat, and Neville wasn't far behind him yesterday.... Sky in trying to make rather than report the news shocker!!

"Oh he's a big player, he's getting the benefit there."

Do feck off Gary. He'd be the first one moaning about the ref ruining the game had he sent Rooney off.

Some of the comments in this thread are no use for anything but comedy. Just how clueless some of our posters are now continues to surprise me.

It was a red if you go by the book, he was lucky. But for anyone who has played the game, I think they would say a yellow was probably fair. It wasn't a kick to hurt the player, he was just frustrated and kicked out as he knew he lost any chance of getting the ball.

Not defending it, he could and probably should have been sent off but there are far worse things that happen in a game then a little kick out.

When will we find out if the FA want to charge him?

Just saw he's grabbed an assist in his last 5 league games. He's really been crucial for us this season. The only one who manages to look good even if the whole team is playing badly.

Personally I think it's a pity more games aren't reffed like yesterday, the ref seemed to just want them to get on with it and stop moaning like fannies.

Rooney was stupid and lucky, thankfully neither of those things offend me.

Our best player again yesterday but could have ruined it all before any of it even began with that kick. We haven't seen that side of him for a while, I hope it's just a one off.

I do feel for the strikers at the minute. Our midfield looks like it couldn't pass water these days. There was a spell yesterday where he was deeper then both Cleverley and Fellaini.

Chelsea would have walked the league with him in this form. I wanted him gone thinking he's gonna be detrimental and a bad influence and shit. How wrong have I been so far!

Rooney is back to his very best! leaner, fitter, hungrier, and most importantly has that fight back.

So many assists. Pity his chip didn't go in, and his effort from outside the box was great. Him and Shinji seemed to really enjoy playing together.

Forget all the BS of the past. We're a match made in heaven. He plays with such heart and drive in this form. Most of our best attacking play went through him and his ability to deliver assists is terrific. Deserved a goal for his efforts though.

He's great at being the lone striker, he seems to have more room to work there than when he comes back deep and gets caught up in the midfield. Always preferred him up front since the 09-10 campaign where he was at his very best.

Tonight was the evidence that Rooney can play as a targetman without it affecting his general performance. 4 assists, only 1 from a set-piece, in Germany against one of the strongest teams.

He's a #9, and a brilliant one at that. As evidenced tonight.

Yeah 4 assists and probably deserved a few of his own playing as the striker. Brilliant stuff. Much better having a real number 10 linking most of the play and letting Rooney stay forward where he can do the damage.

Completely agree with you.

Always said he's best as a striker. Whether it be off the main striker or him as the lone striker. He's just undoubtedly a world class player. Had a below par season last year, when he was probably unfairly treated by Sir Alex, but you can see this season, that when you give him the main role in the team, you see how good he actually is. He has so much to his game though, that no other striker in the world has.

Majestic tonight. Didn't put a foot wrong. Funny in a week where the focus has been on his temperament to see such a beautifully controlled display from him. Moyes has a genuine option now as a first choice front 2. Kagawa behind Rooney looks like a genuinely menacing combination, shiteness of opposition notwithstanding.
