If you hadn't gotten butthurt over someone calling rvp as the better player, you would have noticed the point. I was responding to claims that Rooney can carry the team which is a positive in his comparison with rvp by saying that so can rvp (which is exactly what you just said).

This seasons just started. Rvp has been very good for someone who's not been fully fit. His numbers are excellent. Rooneys been better but probably down to not having injections stuck into him. They're both great players. But for me rvp when not injured is a superior player.

ooh, so feisty :) And this is where we differ. RvP is a better striker of the two, but Rooney is a better player, simply by his ability to create as well as score plus the awesome free kicks.

So who is the better player is decided by a start to a season? I'd rather take a 2 or 3 year spell. Otherwise we might as well take October and call januzaj our best player. Rvp has anyway struggled with injuries this season and is still putting up excellent numbers btw.

No. Similar to Rooney who struggled last season.

Rooney struggled even when he was fit. Rvp has been much better than that Rooney this season. He was very good on Saturday and played a part in every single goal too.

"So we're talking about how good a player has been all season with one 90 minute performance now are we?.."

:D

Agree to disagree mate. I've held this opinion since before rvp came to us and I stand by it. If Rooney has his free kicks, rvp takes a great corner and a lethal penalty kick. Creativity is subjective. Rvp through his movement and little touches and passes in the final third is very creative too. They're high creative and multidimensional strikers.

Anyway this is a bit pointless. There will no doubt be some who rate the other as better,

Er, no we aren't?

Rvp isn't struggling this season. It's not comparable with Rooney of last season IMO. He's doing well but injuries have kept him from being brilliant.

Selective revisionism. Tidy.
Nope just something that's pretty obvious. He's got 9 goals in 12 games despite playing through injuries. You can compare that top Rooney last season who was basically disappointing for most of the season even when fully fit. Fergie even dropped him at times. Rvp is nowhere near being dropped. The manager knows he's not been fully fit and he knows he's still delivering goals no matter what.

Yeah RvP is miles better this season than Rooney last year, but that's really not difficult as he was painful to watch at times.

It depends on what you like in a player, RVP is the more technically polished and cerebral player out of the two imo. Rooney is just so busy full of energy and all over the pitch. Few, if any players who offer as much as him going forward contribute as much defensively. We all know what he doesn't do well but lets concentrate on what he does well, Rooney is an English player through and through (I mean that as a compliment).

I would say RVP is better but he is too easily to keep out of games at times, I know the team does not help that but Rooney will get himself involved in the play when things are not happening for him. I don't know how badly this injury is effecting RVP but last season he was able to use his movement to create space for others and he could affect an attack without touching the ball. So far his lack of pace has been obvious (it has never really hurt him before) and his off the ball work so so.

Rooney was clearly troubled last year though, which was affecting his game. Although you could argue that RvP wasn't happy in his last season at Arsenal yet still scored 37 goals and was PFA player of the year, I guess that shows the difference in mentalities of the two players.

I think when Rooney's happy and his simple mind feels loved, he's the better player than RvP.

RVP is more likely to pull something out of the hat from nothing but Rooney is more likely to control a game.

I've found Rooney's play to be inconsistent in most games this season but the old work rate and desire hasn't stopped which is giving him the edge. His touch and his passing can randomly go to shit at times though.

I don't think you have to nail down who is the better player. What we need is the pair to play well together and if that means RVP isn't as involved at times compared to last season and Rooney being the guy who pulls the strings, then that's the way it goes.

All I know is that Rooney will play more games purely because he's always been better on a run of games rather than having the odd night off. van Persie isn't as delicate as he used to be but with Hernandez in the squad I'm sure the manager is happy to leave him out from time to time if it prolongs his fitness.

I think Rooney's high level is greater than RVP he can literally control a game but RVP is far more consistant, he won't be as bad as Rooney can be if his confidence and fitness drops. Luckly we have both for now at least I think the most important question is when will we tie Rooney down to a new contract the way things are shaping up Moyes is building the team around Rooney and his contract is running down it needs to be done asap imo. I think him signing another deal would also boost the rest of the team and show we hang onto the best players.

He's not though.

Does anyone else think playing in midfield is a poor excuse that contributed to him not being happy? I know he mentioned he was played out of position, but I think he was more pissed off at playing on the wings more than anything. I was watching the Reading game away last year, where Fergie played Anderson behind Van Persie and then when the former picked up an injury, Fergie gave us one of his poorest decisions ever and played Jones behind Van Persie (with Rooney still on the wings). This season, he's played in midfield twice - he's not started in this position, but he contributed to our play in this position against Stoke and Fulham.

I think when it comes to changing shape in a match, it won't matter as much, besides he was the only one who could play there when we made our subs so it made sense.

Bingo. Stay away from that man, Cina. He cannot be trusted.

What I'm liking about Rooney this season is that he's regained the his ability to dribble. I said a number of times before that he'd lost that part of this game and usual Rooney defenders rushed to claim that he never could dribble etc etc, but this season so far shows that he's capable of much more with the ball at feet than he's shown over the last few years. It's not about beating a man like messi or iniesta would, it's about how comfortable you are on the ball and how comfortable you are carrying the ball. And he's beginning to do it more often now than he has in a long long time. Good stuff.

We'll need him to sit in front of our midfield two on Sunday, as he did so well in 2010/11 season. I would be conscious of even playing him tonight, or at least the full 90 as he would need to expend a lot of energy on Sunday.

A lot of records in his sight this season. 1 more EPL goal and he becomes the 5th joint highest scorer of all time in the premier league, 2 goals and he becomes the 5th highest out right. 4 more EPL goals and he will have scored his 150th for United. 7 goals to become 3rd joint highest United scorer in history and 8 goals to become 3rd highest scorer in United history out right. His next CL goal will also be his 30th (hopefully today if he plays).

Inconsistent touch, but had to do more work because of the midfield partnership. Will turn up vs. Arsenal.

He wasn't good today but had no service either. The ball from Fellaini before he got subbed off was one of the rare decent passes he got all game. He had to drop very deep at times because the midfield wasn't creative enough. At one point he was collecting the ball from Rio with his back to goal and could've easily lost the ball in a dangerous area if it wasn't for a nice piece of skill. He shouldn't be that deep at all, our midfielders should be collecting the ball there.

Awful, just awful. No point in taking about having no service (he drops deep), but it was his usual sloppy passing and atrocious first touch that let him and the team down - expected him to score with that. Probably will turn good against Arsenal, but I liked that Moyes substituted him!

He substituted him because he wants him fresh for Arsenal, not because he was poor. He's had far worse games than this where he stayed for whole match.

He's pointless when he's like that, not being able to control the ball or seemingly do any of the basics. It is quite amazing what happens to him sometimes.
