That of course begs a different question - why was the bench the way it was? Also, shunting Januzaj out wide wasn't a good idea either. Let him play in his favoured position for the entire match - he deserved it - played well. Ando could well have come on earlier. I would rather see Valencia as well - boost his confidence. That Rooney substitution was as pointless as it could be. Moyes' substitutions seems ridiculous to me, thus far. It's probably not Rooney's fault, so I'm blaming stupidly cowardly tactics from Moyes.

Don't you think you're overreacting... just slightly?

I'm not quite so irate about it, but I have to agree it was a tad strange - there are players who need games either because they've not played or they deserve a chance to impress or play themselves into some form. If anything Rooney's being overplayed at the moment, basically 90 minutes in every league and CL game, on top of the England games, a proper rest would do us a favour, I reckon.

Hardly a big deal, though.

If he needs to play twice a week to stay sharp he either has a mental or a physical problem, and one that causes a problem for the team. How and why should you accomodate so much game time for one player when the team has the biggest squad in the league and other players are now starting to show their concerns with little game time. That makes it a big problem for the club. If you fail to see that, you should think about the whole squad and not just about Rooney.

Is gametime being rationed out now? "Now, see you've exceeded your quota. I know you are on form, but that's it. Off with you". If you read Fergie's biography, he does mention that Rooney needs to continuously train to be fit and as long as he delivers on the pitch, I don't see why he can't have all the game time! Your arguement is baseless. Just becasue we have a big squad does not mean deserving people should get swapped off.

Bloody hell, folks on here would moan about everything.

Most of you would talk differently if he picked up some stupid injury yesterday.

Bringing Rooney in game where are we cruising against weak side in the capital one cup is stupid IMO, If anything, he could use some rest, he played lot of games lately including two tough games for England, giving him 10 minutes when the game has been already won won't do thing to his sharpness.

How dare Moyes bring on Rooney for 20 minutes of a game where Norwich had given up. It's not like it's proven that Rooney benefits more than others from playing as often as possible. He could've broke his leg or ran a yard too much!

The horror

What people's hate for Rooney has anything to do with it? I don't like him, but I am more worried about him picking some stupid injury playing a meaningless game(or at least game that was already won) than anything else. And as I said, he played too many games lately, he could get some deserved rest. If anything, I think Rooney would be more happy himself sitting out this game.

Nice assist, but did feck all the rest of the time. Wtf was the point in bringing him on? We're up 2-0 at home against a team devoid of any confidence or ability for that matter, and you put on Rooney - what for? Why not have players not given as much game time get some. Rooney really has Moyes eating out of his hand.

Feel for you mate.

Must be hard watching Rooney score and assist goals on a regular basis.

Exactly. He's been given plenty of game time, and putting him, our best player this season, on the pitch after we're winning comfortably is shocking management. Give players who need game time the chance to showcase themselves. It's not a dig at Rooney at all. I want him to stay fresh for the next games. Twenty minutes of game time against Norwich in the league cup will do little for him, but it could do more for other players. Simple as that.

Not at all. He's helping the team, so that's all good. I don't like him, but in my book he's been our best player this season. I just don't think it was a good idea bringing him on yesterday and I can't understand how anyone thinks it was. To keep him sharp? To keep him fit? He would have been better off having a proper work out for those things - he hardly broke a sweat yesterday.

The problem with your post was:

Rooney really has Moyes eating out of his hand.

Nice little, unnecessary dig at both Moyes and Rooney after a game where we won 4-0. Well done.

Unreal, some really are never happy.

'Yeah great assist but I'd rather he hadn't come on and we'd won by 3 instead.'

Maybe a bit uncalled for, I'll admit as much, but I think my point still stands. It's not the end of the world, but the substitutions Moyes makes are annoying, imo. On a forum like this one, I thought one could discuss such things. If Giggs had come on instead of Januzaj, I think many people would be fuming.

Of course you can discuss such things. But people can disagree with you and call you on your opinions if they think they're unfounded, nothing scandalous about it.

Can't believe what I'm hearing. Rooney coming on was exactly the right decision, and the sort of substitution which (whisper it) I often found myself wishing Fergie would do more in his last couple of seasons. Rather than trying to close out a 2-0 lead with a defensive substitution (or none at all), he built on our dominance by adding a fresh attacking threat. It's psychologically crushing to the opposition to see a brilliant forward come on when they're already struggling to cope with us.

Rooney coming on took what little wind was left out of Norwich's sails, and as a result we've come out with a 4-0 victory and some long-awaited momentum rather than a 2-1 or 3-1 and more questions.

The fact that, in Rossa's words, 'he hardly broke a sweat' strikes me as a positive, not a negative. We've won convincingly without Rooney really having to put too much work in, keeping him fresh for the long season ahead. Strikes me as a perfect substitution.

I suppose that's where we disagree. I think Welbeck, for instance, would have added just as much, and he would have tried to impose himself more knowing that he isn't necessarily guaranteed a first team spot, like Rooney, rightfully atm is. I didn't want a defensive substitution - I don't think I argued that - but I wanted someone who hasn't been given game time to come on and show what he could do. Rooney, as you said, was the sensible choice, but also a bit conservative (better word than cowardly, I suppose)

We really need to sort out his contract. Seems the one good thing that came out of Fergie's retirement is that Wayne Rooney has now returned to his old self. Lethal strike partnership with RVP in the making.

Dropped off like everyone else in the second half but he, RvP and Januzaj were brilliant in the first half. We need to give Rooney a really long term deal asap.

Annoying performance. Brilliant in the first half, dreadful in the second - pretty much like our whole team.

Very good in the first half, but poor in the second half. More to do with us dropping to a low block quickly than anything else IMO.

Thought some of his passing was very illogical in the second half. Definitely the spillover effects of the 3 subs.
