Wayne Rooney | 2012-14 Performances

Rooney had a good partnership with Hernandez in 10/11, it is not his fault that Welbeck outperformed Hernandez in 11/12 and took his place. The fact that Saha, Tevez and Berbatov have come out and either said how brilliant Rooney is (best striker they've played with) or how great he was to play with shows that maybe your criticism is unwarranted. In fact, I'd say it is one of his strengths that he has been able to strike up so many partnerships in his career.
The thing is that whilst they've all said it was great to play with him, their actual partnership on the field wasn't that great. Robin said last season that playing with Rooney was fantastic, but apart from a few flashes, you would really be expecting more from their partnership.

I'd say he had a good partnership with Ruud and Saha. He also had a good partnership with Hernandez, again not Rooney's fault if Hernandez gets outperformed by Welbeck and loses his place. I thought Rooney/Welbeck also looked good for club and country but again it isn't exactly Rooney's fault that we bought Robin Van Persie.

I think Rooney's best partnerships have come when he's paired with someone pacey. Saha, Hernandez, Welbeck, of course he worked well with Ronaldo too. For England as well, he seems to link well with Walcott.

I'd love to see United play 4-3-3 personally, so I wouldn't be adverse to that. Rooney, RVP, Nani. Kagawa the top of the midfield 3? Phwoar.
That could work out very well imo. The front 3 is flexible enough to play in different positions and interchange. Plus with Kagawa in the link up role we have that extra man in midfield who brings the ball forward and adds creativity

Could work with Cleverley and 1 other good runner, like a fletcher in his prime. No way could our current midfield put in the leg work required.

Selfish Rooney refusing to play anywhere besides right up top.

Outstanding, particularly when he was controlling the game from midfield. Looked more comfortable when asked to play deeper in CM than when he was behind van Persie.

He can forget about playing so high up front when Moyes persists with him and RvP. He'll have to drop back again if this should ever work well. He was good today but him and RvP both high up the field just won't work. Our CM isnt good enough for a 4-4-2

Whether he likes it or, he needs to play in that midfield role again.

Agreed. Until the next transfer window. If that leads to his leaving then so be it. We cannot have the team suffer because he does not want to play in a certain position. He is quite clearly more than capable of doing the job we need there.

If everyone in the team shared his enthusiasm our football wouldn't be so dour to watch at the moment. There were alot of times when he showed for the ball, received it and turned to find no red shirts within 15-20 yards of him and nobody making themselves available for the ball.

True sign of a top talent, when he's focused he's a different level to RVP in terms of the ability to bring it when the chips are down in my opinion.

I'm usually one of the first to criticise Rooney, but he was excellent today (and mid-week, for that matter). Only offensive starter who can be proud of his performance. He seems to be taking on players again, which is something that has been missing from his game for quite a while, so that's a really good sign.

Billiant again I think its important now to get him tied to a new contract I think this would give the whole of the team a boost.

Very good performance. Difference in tactics today contributed to this. I was impressed with him in CM, too.

Get him to sign a new contract ASAP.

I'd seriously consider giving him the captaincy too.

Aye, that's one of his best attributes. Was the case even with Ronaldo here

I don't get why he's so obsessed with playing up front anyway... surely it's in any player's interest, in terms of career, legacy, whatever, to play where they can be most effective. It's not like he won't get goals playing as an attacking midfielder.

Maybe he should have a little think about whose record it is he's chasing down... and what position that man played. If his brain is up to the job.

It's not like he plays up front anyway is it? He seems to spend a lot of time near the midfield area. Just needs to be given a free role imo

Well prior to this, in the league, he was pushed high up the field. This occurred in two consecutive games and we really did struggle to build attacks. Essentially, imagine today's tactics, but without Rooney linking play through the middle. I hope Moyes has learned something valuable. There's no need to play him higher, he scored 30+ goals in 11/12, playing as he has for most of this season. And his best form for us came in 10/11, while playing behind a centre-forward.

I don't want him positioned deeper at all. For me nothing has changed. He will naturally drift across the pitch because that's what he does best. But he should be finishing chances as well as creating them. If we don't see him in and around the box often enough we lack something in attack. He's in a good place right now and we shouldn't mess with his position because other midfielders haven't been up to par.

That's their responsiblity to step up.

Who said this?

He's probably thinking of stuff like:

he has pressured Moyes into playing him further up the pitch. You haven't mentioned - or maybe you're oblivious to this, so fair enough - Rooney's recent comments: "Everyone at the club knew where I wanted to play and I think that's why I was disappointed. I got told to play in midfield and I didn't want to. I just think there had to come a point when, for my own career, I had to be a bit selfish really." .

I don't really give a feck how much of a lump headed buffoon he is/was, he's our best player, he's one of the best players in the world, and ironically enough, he's the only one who looks like he actually gives a feck and wants to play for this club right now.

Get him a new contract.
