Can't really add much to your post, it's a nice read and seems overall very sensible and rational. You're right about the atmosphere and his eventual negative influence, the only thing I could put forward, but I may be wrong, is that I think that as a club we're very different (I'm talking about the squad here) from Chelsea or City and I don't feel we're full of mercenaries who would let anything affect the team that much. Chelsea was a bit of a weird one, a lot of new youngsters coming into the league (Oscar and Hazard notably) and needing strong leadership to do well, and being rattled by the reception of Benitez probably; City lacked real focus as well and didn't seem to care much. I'm confident that with people like Evra, Vida, Rio, Carrick, etc., guys that are used to defending a title and have been there and done it all, the younger and more inexperienced players won't lose that focus. I really don't think Rooney will have that toxic an influence, and I may be bias, but I really don't think he's as bad a cnut as Balotelli or Tevez, and that when push comes to shove, he'll just buckle down and do what's best for the team.
Maybe I'm being overly optimistic though, I don't know, only time will tell.
