Cost us 2 points today. Agree that that was the worst I've seen him play in a United shirt which is saying something.

Evra's defensive ability cost us two points.

Off days are inevitable but world class players shouldn't be this bad on an off day. World class players aren't this bad on an off day. Except Rooney it seems.

This is the problem. He is unwatchable when off form, can't think of any worldclass players with those kind of perfomrnaces. He can't put the simpliest of passes right.

Maybe. But I've never considered him to be world class in the first place so days like today don't make me reassess my valuation of him. He's still a top player who just had an off day.

You guys sure know how to overreact. You all seem to veer from him being the best thing ever to shite.

It's just one game, it happens sometimes. Can't believe I'm the one defending Rooney considering some people have accused me of 'hating' him. :wenger:

Everyone's saying he played terribly, which he did, not that he is terrible.

I think he still takes too much free kicks, although they're on his favoured side I'd still rather van Persie was on them.

I think you're going a bit over the top here. He may be inconsistent, but we can't forget that he has his fair share of brilliant spells as well and can be one of the league's best forwards at his very best.

I'm not. I've always maintained this stand. Its not an overreaction. I just don't rate him as highly as some. Yes he's a very good player but he's just not world class for me.

I don't think his performances at times are acceptable. It's become a norm for him to put in a mediocre performance 1 out of every 3 games, without fail.
Especially in first halves. He just continually misplaces passes because he's not taking care. The first touch, the ball stuck under his feet. Horrible shots on goal. It's happening far too often.

The fire's gone out of Rooney.

I remember when he first signed for us he said he loves to take people on. Today he took plenty on but I dont think he beat a single man.

Today he found himself in positions where he had to take players on, and his inability to do so was badly exposed. Sadly, he's always been somewhat overrated by English commentators and United fans.

For a supposedly world class footballer, it's hard to list his world class attributes. Very good team player when on form, but far too inconsistent in recent years.

SAF is pissed at him right now, missing too many chances and being utterly careless in the last third.

Should not be in the team on wednesday. Just because he's Wayne Rooney does not mean he should be starting.

Someone needs to make video of his performance today and name it "Wayne Rooney vs Manchester United".

He 'cost' us the three points today I feel, fecked up way to many good situations in the second half. He'll win them back for us later in the season though.

Think though without over reacting, this is an example of Rooney having a really poor game randomly, that you don't see from other top top players. It's not like he's coming back from injury or anything it was just a stinker. Hopefully he'll come out with a point to prove against toon.

This is the sort of shit that stupid fans and 'experts' in this country have been holding against the likes of Zlatan and Totti for years tbh. They obviously didn't get their reputations from nowhere, but they are prone to poor games. Only difference is their good games are not seen/scrutinized as much as Rooney's, so they get more stick on these shores.

Listen to yourselves, you stupid cnuts.

Wayne Rooney is a fecking beast of a player, he's been great all season, all career in fact he's been fantastic. He's entitled to the occasional bad game; the claims that other world class players don't have bad games are just absolute bullshit. Some of you brats simply do not deserve to be represented by a player the calibre of Wayne Rooney.

It happens but he should have been brought off earlier. Was killing our attacks unfortunately. Would have loved Welbeck or Hernandez in some of the positions he got.

I do think he has the lowest level for a top player. When hes bad, hes really shit and you can see frustration occur (and he normally ends up getting booked because of it). Its weird cos I think for the CL game against madrid hes either going to win us the game or cost us.

Hes not had a bad season so far though.

I wouldn't really say he's been great all season. He had a poor start and struggled to get going, was injured, and then gradually started to improve once he returned. He's had some good spells and had a bad game today.

I think the main concerns are how poor he is when he doesn't play well though. It can often be a case of him playing ridiculously poor and losing a lot of his ability in games when he does, compared to other top players who are able to maintain something useful.

I agree that a lot of people are acting spoilt though and are reacting prematurely by denying what class he does have.

He's been amazing lately and I was expecting him to carry it on today. He didn't, he had a shocker but it's just one game. If the next one is similar then I'll start to question his form.

Don't you watch football? All players have terrible games, every single one of them from Cristiano Ronaldo right down to Titus Bramble, they all experience stinkers. Rooney has been in great form this season; he's truly world class, and if you can't see that then you've no place commenting on the sport. Lay off.

He had a terrible game today but big deal. He's been very good recently and one good game doesn't mean anything much. He'll be back to his best in the next few games.

Rooney is world class and I agree he's brilliant, but it's more that his bottom level often seems to be lower than most. Players like Ronaldo will have bad games, but they will maintain something and can often produce a moment of magic. It's not the case with Rooney. When he's at his bottom level like today, he's useless.

I don't know why you're telling me to lay off though. I largely agree with you that he is still a world class footballer, as opposed to the others who are saying he's not and that he should be dropped for the inferior Welbeck.

Of course he shouldn't be dropped, but he shouldn't be immune to criticism either. He was rightly brought off today, after being detrimental to pretty much every attack he was involved in. Best chances fell to him and he wasted them all. Hopefully he's back to his best in the next game.

I would say that the above quote from Cheesy tells me that he has been watching the games. I will add my pennyworth and say that Rooney was absolutely terrible today. He really was Heskey-esque, and he has definitely lost the "White Pele", tag because not even Pele could be as bad as him. It is simply Cheesys opinion and as such, should be respected however right or wrong.

I think RvP and Young had better chances in that one double block than any of Rooney's chances.

Think to say he's been in great form this season is overstating it. Certainly a top player, don't think anyone can deny that, personally though for my part I don't remember seeing other of uniteds top players over the years have quite so random ineffectual games as Rooney can. Spells where shots/crosses/passes don't come off, but the basics they get right, Rooney on his off day can be very off in all parts of his game.

That said everyone is allowed a bad game now and again, it happens, think people are just commenting that when he's bad he seems to be a worse than other comparable top players.

Rooney has produced a moment of magic when not playing particularly well on many occasions. You're talking shit tbh.

First half cut back and the second half when he took too long, then afterwards messed up a simple pass across goal.

Yes he definitely messed up a lot of chances today but as far as clear cut chances go, the ones Young and RvP missed were easier imo.

True world class players have off days, but they are still able to control the football on their off days. They might make the wrong pass or miss chances, but when Rooney has an off day he can't even trap a football, it's astonishing.

I wouldn't even class it as major criticism either. It's merely something that most of us recognise. Most top players can still contribute something on a bad day. Van Persie is an example of that. When he's had bad games, he's had bad games. Rooney, on the other hand, seems to drop down a ridiculous level. He loses his first touch and on a bad day he ends up being detrimental to the team.

I'm probably giving them more leeway because Rooney done it on more than one occasion. It was just a really bad day for him, and best to forget about it as quick as possible. He likes playing against Newcastle, so wednesday should be a return to top form.
