Wayne Rooney | 2012-14 Performances

He looked brilliant yesterday, fitter than he has been in a long while. The debate about him vs. RvP could be an endless one, and it doesn't really matter as we have both in the team, but I've got to say, seeing so much selflessness from a world class player, so much dedication to the team and such willingness to put the collective effort before his own glory really sets Rooney apart from most players. And yet he still manages to pull off MotM appearances time after time and sublimes all those around him. He's a really unique player, I'm not quite sure we fully appreciate how much.

Well to be fair, MOTD did a piece yesterday on just how selfless and brilliant RVP was at defending corners, unreal he was.

Anyway, we have them both, and that's why we're capable of beating anyone, and I really do mean anyone!

Excellent performance, really drove the team on and seemed to be in the right position all the time. Really impressive, although I still think he mishit both goals.

Youngest to hit 150 goals. Read that on Twitter. Can someone confirm?

Yeah it sounds about right.

Great achievement but when you think that Messi has scored half of that in 2012 for Barcelona it certainly puts Messi's achievements in perspective.

Youngest to his 150 goals in the PL. Should have mentioned that in the earlier post.

And Messi, well...

He certainly mishit the first: he wanted to put it there, it was obvious from his body positioning, but he wanted to hit it hard and scuffed it. The second however, that's the best you can do from that kind of cross, in slow motion it doesn't look that good but at real speed you can see he connects with it perfectly and does just what he intended.

Sure, dont misunderstand me, as long as they go in Im happy :)

Second one was cool as you like and a very assured finish.

The first one was the right idea, although executed quite poorly and a bit lucky. But still, you deserve your luck when you play as well as Wayne did.

Surprised me that Fergie played him so high up the pitch. We had a go and it paid off.

He loves that finish, ball coming from the right across his body.

The counter attacking goal against arsenal with him and nani was very similar.

That first goal was like Rooney of old barring the bad contact aspect of the finish. Reminded me so much of him from 2005/06. Second was just trademark Rooney now, he does that quite often.

He and RVP worked their socks off. They didn't see much of the ball in the second half but they kept on running and pressing.

There's not a huge amount of competition. Fowler's the only other one who played in the Premier League from his teens to get over 150 goals and he was almost 2 years older. Shearer was 22 by the time the Premier League began and by the time he was Rooney's age he'd scored 137 in 169 appearances, but it took him until he was 29 to score 150. Andy Cole was 21 at the PL's inception, it took him until he was 30 to hit 150 goals. Henry came to the league at 22 and hit 150 when he was 28. Lampard's the only other one to hit over 150 PL goals.

Rooney - 27
Henry - 28
Fowler - 28
Shearer - 29
Cole - 30
Lampard - 33

And then you realize Shearer is actually 'only' 5th on the all-time list (incl. the old First Division) and Wayne still has some way to go to reach Jimmy Greaves' 357 goal mark

Or the pre-PL era is just discarded altogether?

Football was invented in 1992 remember.

That's a phenomenal record from Greaves though, god knows when someone'll beat that.

What's interesting about it, is how much higher it is than in other 'traditional' nations

Spain: Zarra, 251 (although he has a surreal gpg ratio of 0.91)
Italy: Piola, 274
France: Onnis, 299
Brazil: Dinamite, 190
Argentina: Labruna & Erico, 293

Only exception:
Germany: G. Müller, 365

Rooney said on his twitter that he feels awful, and has had to cancel his book signing today.

Perhaps a doubt for the weekend?. If he has got the same chesty flu that everybody else has had, i doubt he will be able to train / play all week.

Just came here to post this.

If he played in pain on the weekend fair play to him. He looked a smidge off the boil.

We should be right without him on the weekend, so perhaps its best if we rest him anyway so he will fully recover for the game after. Don't want a case were playing him makes any illness linger longer.

Knowing Rooney though, he will want to play regardless

Oh he definitely wants to play this one.

To do with the last game of the season just gone.

Wayne Rooney has hit out at Sunderland fans after they celebrated Manchester City's Premier League title triumph.
Manchester United thought their win at the Stadium of Light had secured the trophy but City scored two late goals against Queens Park Rangers to snatch glory.
And the Sunderland faithful took great joy in their opponents demise, taunting the United players with City's adopted 'Poznan' celebration.

Every season they come to OT and sing "You'll never walk alone" in some weird attempt to wind us up. They're only marginally less pathetic than Stoke fans.

For some reason, I saw the quotation marks and was thinking you were quoting Rooney. I have no idea why, but I was about to say 'woah, Rooney you can't say that about Stoke even if it is the truth.'

Forgot about that. Most likely because I switched of and tried not to pay much attention to football related news for a while after that to avoid City gloating.

Hopefully Rooney can bag a hattrick and we smash them

If he isnt 100%, we shouldnt risk him. Busy period coming up and we'l need him for that. RVP+Hernandez is more than enough for Sunderland.

He wasn't injured, he just said he isn't feeling alright. And yesterday he said he is ok, so there's no need to worry.

Rooney is now just 63 league goals behind Charlton and 60 goals behind Charlton's (249) overall record.

At his scoring rate, that should about 122 games for both records.......three seasons or so.

He is 7th on our list of league scorers, now just one behind Best in 6th.
He is 4th on the overall scorers list - 22 behind Jack Rowley in 3rd.

Amazing stuff.

Yeah, I was uncertain about van Persie. He's been brilliant and his joy in playing with a winning team is bursting through. His look at the third goal up on his tippy-toes, with the little look, was great too.

Could have scored another goal at the very least today! But his overall play is superb and it looks like he is getting back to his best now. So important for him to keep getting on the scoresheet because everytime he does, it usually means he goes on goal scoring run for the next few matches.

He's finally putting in goals on top of generaly good play and setting others (mainly RvP) up.

You can see they love playing with each other, and I know I might be a bit quick going to this but, if they keep it up they might end up as our best ever striker pairing (overtaking Cole & Yorke).
It's like both Wayne & Robin's main thought in the game (besides generaly winning ofcourse) is making sure the other scores, and with both of them being worldclass, and both being able to interchange positions, connecting the way they are connecting, they're bound to put a lot of goals in the back of the net.

I can't imagine how scared opposing team's defenders must be when they see their names on the team sheet, especially with the way they're both playing now.

This is easily our most potent attack since Ronaldo left, and IMO already better than any attack we've had since the treble season up until Ronaldo decided to become the best player in the world (sorry Ruud, you were absolutely terrific and a joy to watch, but unfortunately you were in the team during one of our "darker periods" under Fergie, and didn't really have such a high quality partner up front either).

Think you're right kush. Both RVP and Rooney are more talented than Cole & Yorke. We'll see how it develops.
