Yeah, to me that is more important than anything else. He clearly doesn't want to be at the club, so why reward or encourage that attitude? I'd start Welbeck/Hernandez/Kagawa over him every single game, and be happy that a player who wants to be a part of the club now and for the future, is getting the game time over someone who doesn't seem to give a feck. I'd rather we started building without him in mind at all, because he has no future here, and doesn't want one either.

Under normal circumstances I would go for this approach every time. I'm worried at the moment, though. If Moyes and Rooney can establish a working relationship (and I believe they can) his presence in the squad represents a strength, he is still a player capable of contributing a great deal offensively for us, whether he bleeds for the shirt or not: I feel we need whatever cards we hold in the season to come.

But the main thing is that we don't throw any cards at our rivals: It's selling him to Chelsea I'm absolutely against. If he wants to go somewhere else, i.e. to a club on the continent - by all means, sell him.

Gab Marcotti feels that at Rooney would be best employed on the left wing in a similar vein to that of the 07/08 triumph, it'd certainly make things simpler for us at this moment. Unfortunately eh doesn't have the same outlook today as he did back then.

There has to be a tagline for you somewhere in digging up and posting the most pointless articles not worth the time of anyone on the caf.

The Football Womble?

These articles are some of the best rubbish you could hope to find on a back page anywhere, the most rigorous quality control practices are implemented i can assure you.

I'd still like to see him stay, and feel it is important that we keep him. You don't want to get into the habit of selling your best players.

Most things can be fixed behind the scenes.

It is hard to understand the logic behind his urgency to leave, he had suggested in the past that he had set himself the target of being United's all time top goal-scorer, even after the previous contract situation. As duffer said it's probably the Mourinho factor - he probably wanted Jose at United and believes he'll make him a better player. He might be right too.

He was still poorly advised to isolate himself like this before it looked like we had a replacement though, cause he must have known there's no way it'd ever happen otherwise.

There is no "logic" - save that he thinks the grass is greener at Chelsea.

He may fancy playing for Mourinho - but his agent will also know that on current form he wont get a new contract from United on anywhere near what he's on now. A move now is more lucrtative.

It seems he's badly advised, and cant take the criticism and home truths he's had from Fergie - so his answer is toys out of the pram and ask for a move. If and when he goes to Chelsea we'll see an improvement on his form in the short term - but I maintain, that unless he looks after himslef meticulously all the football he's played will catch up, and as has been shown a 95% Wayne Rooney is nowhere near the player he is at 100%.

Rooney would do well to listen to the likes of Sir Alex - over and above his agents and hangers on who'll be continually blowing smoke up his arse.

On form he's a regular - on current form he's on the bench. The money he's on is a huge factor - because I can't see that the club will consider they're getting value for money.

I think he'll go. United will bring in a big name to appease the fans, he'll be told to make a formal transfer request so the club dont back track and he'll be gone.

Incidentally, Nick is one of the forum's most intelligent and articulate posters; just because he's not "getting behind Wayne Rooney" doesn't automatically make him a looney. In short, if discerning posters like Nick suspect something is amiss regarding the pro-Rooney PR, then you can be sure that something probably is amiss. It's a cheap, convenient & expedient tactic to label Rooney critics as Rooney haters, and it misses the point completely.

HA! Even the sane and rational posters like Nick are seeing the truth. I knew it would happen eventually! MWA HAHAHAHAHA

He's expected to be on the bench Saturday at Swansea. Hopefully he doesn't sit at one end or it might tip over.

Ben Smith (BBC) reckons he will be on the bench tomorrow. I hope he gets some playing time but its going to be odd if he comes on and scores a winning goal. It might also set him up to start against Chelsea next week...that will also be interesting.

for those that do not want him to go, say he does stay....

What happens the next time something does not go his way and he holds the club hostage again with his demands? what happens when there is a year left on his contract and he does not sign an extension?

if he does not want to be here, I do not want him here. Why keep a player here against his will? If he does stay, will we be able to realistically expect top notch performances from him for the majority of the matches knowing that he did not want to be here?

He's leaving. There's no chance that we'll keep an unhappy player on board especially since he's at the wrong end of his contract. Once a big name signing is made, Rooney will be a goner.

Who and when will this happen?

my view is that we can prepare for his exit next summer

if we sell him this summer we would get 30-40 - next summer there wont be much difference

I genuinely think Rooney has one year left max and we will sell him when the time is right for us....

That's the question many of us asked after 2010. He came out a year and a bit later, addressing the fans directly and said that he had made a big mistake and would want to retire here, as he now knows better. Less then a year later he then tells Fergie he wants to leave, and here we are now. There is no next time, this time was his "next time", and he couldn't even commit to his own words for more than a year, let alone the rest of his career.

You would think so but there is feck all interest. Chelsea haven't even gone to £30million according to reports so there isn't really a realistic opportunity to sell.

If there was more interest then I agree he would off

I am actually surprised about the lack of interest. You'd think the likes of Madrid and other teams like PSG and Monaco would be interested but we've heard nothing. Maybe there's something we don't know? Maybe he really is not for sale. What's annoying me the most is him not saying anything about the situation.

It's probably the same reason only Barca were in for Fabregas when he left Arsenal. All the other clubs knew that's where he wanted to go so didn't waste their time.

I think PSG wanted him but I doubt he would want to go there, hence they went and bought Cavani. Madrid are after Bale for a ridiculous amount of money, Barca have just signed Neymar. This is also probably why only Arsenal seemed to be interested in Suarez and now he has apologised. If Rooney actually wants to leave then it will be Chelsea where he wants to go. We won't sell him to Chelsea (or Arsenal it seems), which means he stays.

I've been saying the same thing for years (suffering the usual sneers by the top reds), ROONEY IS NOT REALLY RATED OUTSIDE BRITAIN. British fans may have a fetishness towards hard working forwards but for many supporters/experts in mainland Europe, thats just a commodity which usually hides lack of discipline or/and football brain. No wonder why strikers like Mancini, Ravanelli and Massaro weren't treated with the respect that they deserve.

Stating that 30m for Rooney is a bit ridiculous. However its better 30m then nothing. I am confident that if Man United are willing to negotiate then the fee may go up to 35m

That's leaving it too late to find a replacement, I reckon he will have to stay until next summer.

Mourinho said he could play for any team in the world while he was at Madrid. Xavi, Messi and Iniesta said they'd love to have him in the Barca side at various points. One of the resident German posters said this:

Not a United fan, and I'd take Rooney over Ronaldo for Bayern within a second. I don't think Rooney is the better player, but I think he can be more important for a team these days.

...

But all things considered, I think Ronaldo is not as influential for Real's success than Rooney is for United's. But there's probably no way we'll find out, just wanted to show that it's not only United fans who think this way. And I know there are lots of germans who think likewise.

Yeah, it's just those ignorant Brits that rate Rooney.

But all those people you referenced are actually top reds trying to sneer at devilish

There's talk (guardian podcast) that PSG were in for Rooney but Fergie warned Blanc off him.....

Could be nonsense of course

Next summer when/if we put out that we are willing to sell all the top clubs will be interested

Yeah but Malta doesn't rate him and that's the world outside of Britain. What an arse.

If they all rate him then why aren't they in foe him? Would the likes of Real Madrid or Barca really care about Chelsea and their interest? Would they bollocks.

All we've heard from any foreign team this summer is the Bayern guys saying they 'don't know what he'd bring to the Bundesliga', or something along those lines.

It's probably the same reason only Barca were in for Fabregas when he left Arsenal. All the other clubs knew that's where he wanted to go so didn't waste their time.

He might not want to leave England. He has a wife and two kids - with grandparents and whatnot entering the equation. That leaves but a certain London club - given that even Stretford realizes a move to City is out of the question. So, yeah, I think you may very well be right.

The idea that nobody really wants him, i.e. that he is terribly overrated by United fans (or rather, those imbecile United fans who still rate him at all), is very appealing to the ABR brigade. But the fact that Mourinho wants him (for that matter that Wenger wouldn't mind him either) seems slightly at odds with the theory that only the blood and thunder dimwits in the English press think highly of the fecker.

It's also an obvious discrepancy at play here - between the blood and thunder theory and the constant cries about his lack of fitness and dedication. He is, it would seem, a hard-working, not too sophisticated, typically English player - who is also anything but hard working.

The hatred of the man distorts the judgement of the player - to a significant degree, I'd say.

They think he's not professional enough according to that German journo bloke. Suppose he wouldn't get away with smoking and drinking in the summer...

Well they're right there, but I think he'd struggle to fit in at a team like Bayern or Dortmund. His weaknesses are highlighted in playing for us on a weekly basis. He'd stand out like a fecking sore thumb in either of those teams.

Nowadays I just think Rooney is everything a Manchester United player shouldn't be. The fact that so many would happily see him go speaks volumes.

What? The only statement I've heard from the Bayern players was to the contrary - positively so. I think you're referring to Honigstein's comment.

There's also the question of who needs him. PSG got Cavani to add to Ibrahimovic, Monaco brought in Falcao, Barcelona had the Neymar deal done and, as you say, Bayern aren't interested due to them seemingly having Lewandowski signed and the fact they don't want a player who isn't completely professional and is on huge wages. The only big European side that I thought might go for Rooney were Madrid, given they look a bit short in terms of proper strikers, but they seem to be focussed entirely on Bale.

It was one of the top guys at Bayern, unless I dreamt it!

Karl-Heinz? Who knows. All I know is there was a poll of some kind - someone on here linked to it - that showed Rooney was top of the list of the players they'd like to see in the Bundesliga. Honigstein's comments were damning, granted - but he's a pundit, paid to make "interesting" observations.

He is one of the greatest players in the world as there are very few players with his qualities. He’s a player I admire very much.

That's a quote from one of Bayern's top guys. Bald guy, not German, recently employed.

Guess what, neither Barca nor Real are interested

And just because mainland Europe doesn't rate the 'white pele' as highly as the Brits that doesn't mean that they are ignorant. Different football leagues requires different skills.

If you want my opinion. I am somehow in the middle. I like hard working striker but I dont see hard work as a must have asset (for a forward). Finishing, creativity, technique and football brains are more important, in my opinion.
