Even if that means selling him to Chelsea?

No, but then selling him to Chelsea isn't the only option, it's just the most discussed one because of their offers and his interest. If we were to receive Mata from them and a high fee, I'd think strongly over it, maybe say yes. I would sell basically anywhere else though, any club in the world aside from Chelsea/City.

I see, I thought you meant sell him regardless.

I wouldn't listen to Roy Keane anymore.

Why not? At some point we have to accept that just because he does not wear red tinted glasses, his opinion is redundant! Keane's views may not be to a United fans liking, but they are often close to the truth.

No, but it would be better than seeing him go to Chelsea - as Arsenal will not be title contenders with or without Rooney.

What if they sign Rooney and Gustavo? They would then arguably have a better side than us.

----Gustavo-Wilshere--
Walcott-Cazorla-Podolski
--------Rooney--------

Very strong on paper.

Strong, but not better than us.

This been quoted yet?

Manchester United forward Robin Van Persie has made public his views on the Wayne Rooney transfer saga, by revealing that he wants the Englishman to stay at Old Trafford. The Flying Dutchman was quoted telling The Sun: “Everyone wants Wayne to stay and deep down I think he feels the same. One of the reasons I joined Manchester United was to play with Wayne. I hope he stays.”

I reckon he'll be staying.

Midfield is better no debate there. Walcott is better based on last year's showing. Cazorla is currently better than Kagawa. Obviously if Nani and Valencia can find their best form again we are clearly better but if it doesn't happen Arsenal edge it in my opinion.

I agree with those who think he wouldn't mess with his 'brand' or would be most likely to slip into is natural mode which seems to be to want to play. He has always struck me as the kind of bloke who'd be grabbing a kick around at every available opportunity if he worked in the local supermarket rather than at a football club. He has really disappointed me with his behaviour of late but I'm pragmatic enough to accept his less than heartfelt efforts if the outcome is goals for us. It's a pity that this is playing out in such a a tacky way but life is full of these little irritations. I don't think he'd poison the dressing room because I don't think he's sharp enough to manipulate the strong-willed personalities who inhabit it. It's wholly predictible that the press are having a field day and using the saga as a stick to beat Moyes with but don't have to let them get to us. Yes, it would be nice if this was all sorted out and we could just concentrate on preps for the season opener but it aint. And we can live with that - the club, the manager, the players have the cojones to handle the pressure this brings. Let's not get all Clive Dunne about it.

Yeah but we'll see how fit Wilshere stays, but tbh the main difference between the teams is squad, they simply don't have the quality of depth that we do across the squad imo. In midfield Carrick is better than Gustavo so overall probably not a huge amount in it, not enough imo to think they would dominate in midfield. As you said going on last seasons form Walcott is better but then going by last season Rooney is pretty inferior to RVP. On paper I'd still fancy us but I wouldn't say there would be a huge amount in it, but as I said the difference is the squads.

Hodgson came out with that classic cliche about Rooney ,as being the first in and the last out in training.

If he wasn't injured, then why would United lie about it? What benefit did it serve for the club? If he wasn't injured, it was so obvious that England would confirm that he wasn't injured, as always seems to happen, which has now happened. Might as well have done what Spurs did, and just say his head's not right. Which it clearly isn't, because he sees playing alongside RvP as some sort of career-wrecking burden, the daft cnut.

WTF is going on, Hodgson says that he has no physical injury ,played a full part of training and is expected to play in the match on Wednesday, all the the day after he could not play for United because he has a shoulder injury.
Something is not adding up.

Good post. As September approaches everyone will have to accept the situation and live with it. Can't come soon enough.

Well I was convinced he wouldn't kick a ball for us again and we were just making excuses until Chelsea or another team offered us something respectable. I thought that was widely accepted but obviously many still think nothing is going on.

Seconded.

Hodgson coming out and saying that Rooney has no physical injury and he will play a full part of the match, he might has well say United are full of shit and there is nothing wrong with Rooney.
You dont do from not playing in a match with a shoulder injury to having no physical injury inside 24 hours.

Me too.

The bit I don't get is why Moyes is coming out with all this cocky "You're all oging to look stupid" stuff. I can understand general denials, and maintaing a "not for sale" stance while trying to negotiate more cash out of the buyer, but his comments are so definitive that it just leaves him looking a bit daft if we sell. I know there was "I wouldn't sell them a virus", but that was quote a long time before Ronni was sold... if Rooney goes, it'll be within a couple of weeks of Moyes' latest comments.

Does anyone else think the media want this transfer a little bit too much.

Of course they do. They've spent the last 15 years going on about the downfall of United. Rooney away to Chelsea is a story they'll be salivating over. They can then rip into Moyes and United and start the whole end of an empire thing again.

Well I for one hope he stays and has a fantastic season.

The media are more concerned about him as an England player. So want him at his best for the World Cup. If that means getting regular football in his preferred position at renties ,so be it.

More like they want Englands media darling at Englands media darling club.

Its strange that Abramovich has not made a mega offer by now. He usually likes to throw his weight about and get what he wants. Maybe he is not as keen on Rooney as Mourinho is.

I think this summer has shone more light on how the media get used by different parties in football, but they're quite willing to go along with it because it's a sure-fire way to sell content when there's no football on.

He's not being cocky from how I read it; he's being firm. He's stating the club's stance on the transfer which has to be unequivocal. Fergie knew it when he said the virus thing; at the time, it was the right thing to do because anything else would have made us look weak and ripe for picking. Sure, we did end up selling in that case, but no one really cares in the long run that Fergie said that, it's yesterday's fish&chips paper. Fergie's intention was to stop people from talking/asking about it, and I suspect that's Moyes' intention too.

Basically, the levels of fitness needed to play for England aren't the same as for Utd. Rooney could get on the teamsheet for England with a broken ankle and a torn muscle.

This is all this episodes means.
