I wonder if Rooney was always planning to push for a move, so SAF made it public while he was manager to ensure that the press didn't just associate his wish to leave with the appointment of Moyes.

Who knows. By many accounts, this whole thing started with Rooney seeking assurances about his status in the squad.

If he has the time to write how he is looking forward to joining up with England. I'm sure he has the time to right how he is looking forward to playing for us. Do you think Chelsea would bid, if he wants to stay?

Not saying this is true. But there is a story going around that Jose and Rooney had a little chat, when we played Madrid in March. Ferguson got hold of it and confronted Rooney about it.

That cant be true. Mourinho wanted to be United's next manager then.

Everyone has their own theory regarding why SAF went public like that. Normally, SAF tells even close friends in the media (Bob Cass, for example) to f-off if they 'disappoint' him; yet he appeared to welcome Shreeves' query. Bit suspicious...

I'd say it was definitely some sort of attempt to take the heat off of Moyes. It doesn't really matter whether it's about Rooney pushing for a new contract, throwing his toys out of the pram for not being the main man or him simply wanting to move on; if Moyes had to deal with any of that without having had Sir Alex publicly taking the firm stance that he did then it would've immediately given the impression that Moyes is incapable of managing big names properly.

He'd have no choice but to take a pay cut. I don't think Chelsea would pay his current wages either.

I think Chelsea would. Isn't the relatively unproven Hazard on sillysilly money?

My opinion on it all is that Rooney must be coming up to contract negotiation time again, and probably knows he's not going to get a contract like he's on now, and will probably have to take a pay cut at United. I really don't think he has a problem playing in attacking midfield and being second in command at centre forward to RvP. I reckon he understands that football is so fluid now, that formations are almost meaningless, as players will constantly tuck in, drop deep, overlap and fill in for each other, that a #10 is going to get plenty of opportunities in the box to score goals. I think this comes down to money, completely. He won't get another £200k contract here, but he probably will at Chelsea. I imagine they've got a good number of players who are getting paid around that mark who Rooney can be considered more valuable than. I think Chelsea would just throw money at him. It strengthens them, it weakens us, it keeps him happy. It's win win for Chelsea.

This is what I wanted to post, but worded better. Nice one.

If this had all come out of the blue, the media would've been far more critical of Moyes. I don't think Sir Alex made the decision to go public lightly, and just like countless of times in the past we should probably trust his judgement.

Can you provide a link to Moyes' quotes on this?

As an aside, while I agree Rooney hasn't overtly been a twat in the media, his team of advisers have been briefing the media throughout the summer.

I had a long conversation with Roy about it last week. Wayne has had a shoulder injury. He has been sore with it, which has meant he has not been able to have any contact. He has trained a little bit with the reserves as a non-contact player, a floating player, so at least he got a little bit of football work. He trained with the first team on Saturday and he did a bit of extra work, so he is probably more likely to be ready for England than he will be for us. You've got to remember he has had no football practice.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane says the club should sell Wayne Rooney if he wants to leave.
The Republic of Ireland international said that Rooney should be allowed to go, even if it means selling him to Premier League title rivals Chelsea.
He said: “I think if the player wants to leave, and it’s a good offer – if it’s £30-40m – and I don’t care if it’s from Chelsea – it could be from anybody – then take your money, rebuild the club because Manc United have lost great players over the years and they’ve always recovered an continued to win trophies.”

Can't say i disagree.

I thought Moyes dealt with the question about Rooney very well. Seemed very confident and that was noticed by the commentators.

Impressed with Moyes today. He's put a lid on the issue for now in my book.

Moyes on Rooney: "I didn't fall out with Wayne. He trained with reserves at his asking'' So he won't be sold? "Correct''.

I thought he trained with reserves because he wasn't allowed any contact in training?

Or is this him trying to force a move?

It's a very different situation with Rooney, though. He's not just a great player, but a world class striker who we'd be selling to a title rival that really needs one. If we sold Rooney to Chelsea and he started playing as he did when he was the main forward in 09/10, 30-40m would be a laughable fee given how much we'd strengthen them. For that risk alone we should be looking for something completely extortionate.

Would rather keep Rooney for 2 years and let him leave on a free than sell him to a title rival. If chelski actually bought him it would very much be like when we signed RVP last season. Rooney would negate their one glaring weakness and likely win trophies for them. I'd rather we keep Rooney for 2 years and have a better shot at winning the league title. That would add up to more than the 30-40m chelski could pay us anyways.

Would've been nice if he could've congratulated the boys on the win today.

Same, no doubt. I still think the 09/10 form is well within Rooney and the position we play him in now that he used to be more suited is bringing out his inconsistencies. He cannot be relied upon in that role and Van Persie is fairly undroppable currently as the main forward.

Sell him to Chelsea for them to play as the front man and there's every chance he'll play like the £60m forward (or whatever...) we've seen previously. His up and down first touch won't be as much of a problem if it's Mata that's playing across the final third and not him. It's asking for trouble. Even with Arsenal we'd be giving them a tremendous platform to re-enter the title race, with them only needing a player here and there on top of him to start looking a real threat again.

If not abroad, not at all...unless we're talking crazy, crazy figures/player exchanges.

Better Arsenal than Chelsea. I'd even take a lesser transfer fee if that was the case. I guess we do owe them something after they gave us RVP  I don't think Sylvestre going there sweetened the deal

Still, Moyes continues to be assertive about this. I'm still hoping that he can change Rooney's mind.

So Moyes called the media out for being a bunch of charlatans, nicely done.

If you're Talksport who you gonna call? That's right, Neil Ashton.

Let's sell Rooney to Arsenal and return them a favour in letting us have RVP.

just bee sent to me via Facebook.

Arsenal to Launch £33m bid for Manchester United Striker Wayne Rooney.

Getting better but still short, Arsenal would be better than Chelsea.

Definitely would be better, wouldn't mind him going there really and I just want him gone

£40million would be awesome, please do it Arsene.

They have had Neil Ashton on and he was saying Moyes was a bit short, to be fair to Sam Matterface, he asked Ashton what the 2nd question they asked was. Basically saying, well how the hell do you expect him to be. It is awful how the press are treating Moyes. They are like a pack of wolves. I think he is handling them well and they might regret messing with him.

Confusion reigns over why Rooney was declared unfit for Sunday's Community Shield victory against Wigan Athletic, but is available for England's Wednesday friendly with Scotland on Wednesday. Moyes was neither confused or amused.
"I don't see why you think that's confusing. Tell me why you think that's confusing," he demanded.
"It's a big game for England," replied the reporter.
"It's a big game for Scotland!" Moyes responded, to cackles laughter, a la Ferguson. "You don't think I'm gonna send England a fit player, do you?" he joked.
"Wayne has trained and some of you might not like hearing this, but I didn't fall out with Wayne. Some of youse wrote complete untruths. Wayne trained with the reserves because it was at his asking. And in case you're wondering he played as a floating player [a forward who plays for whichever training team is in possession] so that he didn't get injured.
"So anybody who wrote anything else is misleading the readers."
When it was suggested Moyes was becoming weary talking about Rooney, he interjected.
"I'm quite enjoying talking about it because I'm hearing so many of you getting it wrong. I know most of you and I think to myself, you're a bit cleverer than that. But some of you aren't acting that way at the moment.
"I want him to join up [with England]. He's not ready, you'll probably see that in the game. He'll probably play a chunk of the game but he's had no football.
"He had 45 minutes in a friendly against Real Betis. Apart from that, he's had no match action so you probably wouldn't expect somebody in that condition to be playing for a long period. He wasn't ready for today's game."

I hate the British press, bunch of tossers.

Agree with this.

If no foreign club wants Wayne Rooney then he must be forced to stay. Simple. Even when his all around game has gone to pot Rooney can still score goals and that is what Chelsea would be buying him for: The English Drogba, a powerful, pesky mobile unit who can hassle centre halves and hit rockets in. Its a role he'd excel at.

"Sometimes you gotta lose to win"

Really, Roy? Not something I'd have imagined him saying as a player. Also, he says United have lost great players but we've never passed a great player onto a direct title challenger. Important difference, that.

Ah moyes, already sounding a bit like fergie with the media. I remember that presser fergie gave once where he went off on one saying, "well because it's the way youse behave...why would I want to come and talk to you people??"
